Ubuntu :: Nautilus Clamscan File Or Folder Scan Freezes

Aug 13, 2010

I decided to check out nautilus-clamscan, in which all it does is add an option to scan the selected file or folder for viruses in the context menu, and while it works fine for some things highlighted, for some that I've randomly tried it freezes, and won't complete scanning. using the usual method of scanning for viruses through Clamtk, it scans those files and folders just fine, so it's not those themselves that's causing the freezing.

OpenSUSE :: Using Clamav And Suse Live Disk To Scan Windows For Virus

Jul 29, 2010

when I attempt to scan anything with clamav from a terminal I get the following error:

ERROR: Can't create temporary directory /var/lib/clamav/clamav-da584cb3f4ee38529f0460ad6f7dc632
Hint: The database directory must be writable for UID 999 or GID 100

Which I take to mean that there are no virus definitions installed. I use the "freshclam" command. Which results in the following error:

ERROR: Can't create temporary directory /var/lib/clamav/clamav-da584cb3f4ee38529f0460ad6f7dc632

Fedora Networking :: Investigate Virus Using To Port Scan Edu Sites?

Nov 17, 2010

I installed F14 on a friend's computer a couple of weeks ago. Today she called me saying that her ISP called her telling her they'd have to cancel her internet if she didn't fix whatever virus was sending port scans to edu domains that they'd gotten complaints from. I thought "well, there's a first"... I've got ssh to her computer, so i shelled in and ran a couple of commands, but i really know very little about how to investigate this kind of stuff.

She's directly connected to her cable modem via cat-5; but she does have a wireless card installed --she just doesn't use it, nor a router, afaik, nor as far as i'd seen when i setup her printer. I googled a bit, and ran a couple of commands, and 1 of them was interesting because it APPEARS that her wireless card is ON and the eth0 is OFF? Perhaps someone will know how to read this output better than i, and the output of the other command that i ran. Also, does anyone know any other ways to properly investigate this one? FWIW, she does use transmission to download torrents.

Anyway, here's the commands i ran:
Code:
[root@localhost ~]# ip link show
1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00.

2: eth0: <BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state UNKNOWN qlen 1000 link/ether 00:21:97:9b:70:29 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff

3: wlan0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN qlen 1000 link/ether 00:1e:e5:9c:b6:8a brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff [root@localhost ~]#

Ubuntu Security :: Virus Resides In The MBR And "rebuild" The MBR To Actually Remove The Virus?

Jul 15, 2010

I have a dual boot computer. The WindowsXP "side" has been infected with a rootkit virus. So far UBUNTU has not been affected to my knowledge. I have not yet removed the virus from the WindowsXP "side". I am thinking of deleting the NTFS partition and have the computer fully dedicated to UBUNTU. Now for my question. Is there a possibility that the virus resides in the MBR and that I need to "rebuild" the MBR to actually remove the virus?

Even more extreme, should I totally re-install UBUNTU in the name of safety and precaution.

OpenSUSE :: How To Make Sure I Didnt Get A Virus

Feb 16, 2010

I know that running linux makes you safer from viruses, since viruses are mostly windows based, however IMHO there are still chances to get some kind of viruses or better said some malicious code in scripts/cookies via browsing. I'm no expert if this field and would therefore need some of your advice. So the thing that made me think, happened yesterday, when I, as a registred user on forum Allgemeines Forum got an email, from one, who obviously didn't have good intentions. I did report the mail on the forum, here Forum abused?!you can check the thread with original mail I got. I did follow the link in the mail to check what is it about, and saw a script that fired up, pretending that it scans my computer for viruses and as a result showed that I have many viruses on my pc on various places. Quickly I saw it can't be true, since the content on the page displayed was showing as if I had a Win xp system. And when I tried to click to close it, it offered me some exe file to install, at that point I closed the browser and didn't download the file. However I am a bit in doubt if anything else downloaded automatically without my confirmation (a cookie, script,..), which executes with the help of the browser and is not OS dependent. So now I wonder how could I check I didn't get anything malicious? The most threatening I find some potential "key logger" which would monitor my input on password protected areas I browse. Browsing around I found a nice site showing how to protect you browser better Securing Your Web Browser and I tend to follow some of the advices mentioned for firefox. I know that for safe browsing it is not just the browser responsible, but also the user using it. So any your advices from this field would be appreciated and by posting this, I would also like to point at some most tricky ways, that some f****** imbeciles try to use in order to steal private data, so watch out.

OpenSUSE :: AVG Scan Causing Kernel Failure?

May 1, 2011

I just installed OpenSUSE 11.4 x64 as a fresh full-install last week. Seems to be running great, up until the last couple days when I installed AVG. Every time I do a avgscan, it runs for 20 to 60 min, and then causes the PC to reboot. The only thing I can find is the following event in the /var/log/messages:

Code:
May 1 11:45:01 linuxbox sntp[7653]: Started sntp
May 1 11:45:59 linuxbox kernel: [38429.349995] iTCO_wdt: Unexpected close, not stopping watchdog!
May 1 11:46:00 linuxbox kernel: [38430.111688] PM: Marking nosave pages: 000000000009d000 - 0000000000100000

[Code].....

I get this result every time I try to do a virus scan. I also have seen this result once when doing a large scp transfer from another Suse box. The AVG log just terminates and gives no warnings as to what's going wrong.

Are there any other logs I can check out to try to troubleshoot this further???

OpenSUSE Network :: Cannot Scan Windows server

Jul 10, 2011

I tried to decipher the info on the opensuse site about networked scanners but it's not clear to me and I don't see anything in the forum here that addresses the question, so here goes. My PC is an opensuse 11.3 box. My Epson CX9400 is attached to a Windows 7 PC at the other end of the house.

The PC's can talk and can access shared files nicely. It will print perfectly from the Windows box or the Linux box. It will scan perfectly from the Windows box. BUT I cannot scan documents from the Linux box. Have installed XSane and Image! Scan for Linux and neither one seem to find the scanner. I tried adding it manually in YaST and it doesn't seem to find it either.
