Security :: Computer Has Been Infected With Trojans?
Jan 7, 2010I'm now running Ubuntu 9.04. There are 2 accounts on this computer, one is linux, the other is ubuntu. Before New year, everything had been fine. But after new year, I came back and found that the password of this account linux has been changed. So I fixed using my rescue disk. But since that day on, it seems that this password changes everyday somehow. Everyday when I'm trying to log into my Ubuntu System using the account linux, it says login failed. However, i can still login using the account ubuntu. I'm really confused. Why is this? I checked the date of expiry. Everything seems to be fine.

Feb 28, 2010Can a virus survive a reformat, running bootrec /fixmbr (both from the install CD), and then installing Ubuntu? Reformat meaning from the windows disk recovery console, using the format command for all partitions. Likewise, would a virus be capable of surviving just the first two steps alone without installing Ubuntu, just re-installing windows?
If one were to have an MBR virus on Windows or Linux, how abouts would you find or remove it without doing an entire disk wipe? And before someone goes "Linux is immune" take into consideration vulnerabilities on the user end.

May 20, 2010I was on funnyjunk.com yesterday, looking at funny pictures. I clicked the next button, and a page popped up displaying that the website had malware hosted by hit.d1.net, however when I had Windows XP the MacAffee Siteadvisor Displayed that there was no malware. Is this Real or Fake? Just wondering if it is one of those fake spyware alerts, like from windows.

Jan 3, 2010I'm so used to Windows having to run multiple malware scans with multiple tools. Running registry cleaners and running CCleaner to remove all of the old temp files, cookies etc.. Derfagging. Ok with Ubuntu no more malware scans. No more registry scans. It appears that there isn't a defrag tool? And what about the other things that tend to clog up the works, Temp files , cookies etc. Is that what the disc janitor is all about?

And does Factory Resetting or Hard Resetting clear all data on the device and reset it entirely? If so, how does that work? Is there a specific storage chip on the device that cannot be written to and only read for when a hard reset is requested?
I'm aware that this sounds outlandish but I've got a severe paranoia for some reason and would like peer advice on how to resolve this and get some peace of mind.

Normally, on Windows, I would have an anti-virus that would likely give me some sense of good or bad websites. On Ubuntu, I am not quite sure. Do I need a malware scanner for the firefox browser? 1. "To the best of our knowledge, the core TEX programs themselves are (and always have been) extremely robust. However, the contributed programs in TEX Live may not reach the same level, despite everyone�s best efforts. As always, you should be careful when running programs on untrusted input; for maximum safety, use a new subdirectory."
What does this exactly mean? The installed program has already created own directories and subdirectories (e.g. /usr/local/texlive/2011/bin/i386-linux). Am I supposed to create a new subdirectory in home to write files and run latex program? Exactly how do I know that the downloaded and installed program is not malicious?
2. "Finally, TEX (and its companion programs) are able to write files when processing documents, a feature that can also be abused in a wide variety of ways. Again, processing unknown documents in a new subdirectory is the safest bet."
what is implied by "a feature that can also be abused in a wide variety of ways".
Ubuntu :: Nautilus-clamscan Doc Items Identified As Viruses
Jul 14, 2010I found today that ClamTK identifies items in /usr/share/doc/nautilus-clamscan/examples folder as possible viruses. The four files in question, "clam.exe, clam.cab, clam.exe.bz2, and clam.zip" are all part of the standard file list in packages.ubuntu.com. None are marked as executable, but are identified as binary files by less. Any ideas why these files are here or what they do, besides generate false warnings?

Sep 23, 2010I've prepared a Samba fileserver at work without much too problems and I've prepared a batch file to mount it as z: letter on windows machine at startup.As a sad result the share gets filled with many viruses and became a vehicle of infection.
folder1 ----> folder2 and many other files and folders
folder1 has a condivision access read and write for everyone so I get no problems with passwords for all those who have access but i use ntfs security to do it read only (viruses act like if a pendrive is connected and mainly put infected files just in the "root" of it, in my case in folder 1) and then give everyone full control in folder2. I've been trying to understand how to do this but I'm quite new to linux and smb.conf really scared me. I've tried samba graphical tool which was a lot easier but I'm not able to achieve this kind of result: no need of user password for users to mount the share and no write possibilities in folder 1 and full control in folder 2.
General :: Malware On Hard Drive ?
Jun 18, 2011I have seen the light and will convert to Linux. I have booted this laptop from a CD with Ubuntu. The hard drive has been seized by a fake Window XP restore trojan(?), which sends all kinds of error messages and shows there are no files on the drive and no access to it. Using Ubuntu I can see everything is there.
Is there a way I can use Ubuntu and something like Malwarebytes to kill the malware on the drive? Then I believe I could back it up before I reformat it and bring it into the Linux world.

Mar 24, 2010I realize that FF 3.6 was referred to near the end of this thread? Most Ubuntu based distros (Mint, Gosalia, Ubuntu, Xubuntu) are shipped with FF 3.5.8, are there any reported problems with this version of FF? Mint does offer Opera, I really don't care about installing Wine to gain access to IE6, you open the browser, there are two critical updates that shows, but on three occasions, I left the desktop for an hour, and the two updates still never applied. I have installed Clam AV, is there a malware scanner for Mint, too? I do want to be secure, but don't wish to run two AV's, have four separate malware scanners, and scan every piece of everything the way you must do in Windows. With Windows, you spend more time scanning than browsing. I don't want to have to do this with Mint, too.

which java is /usr/bin/java
Yesterday, for the first time, I downloaded and ran an Avast! scan. It complains of "Malware-gen" in several class files in what I think is the java cache. Does anyone know how this could be?
Fedora :: Wine And Windows Viruses ?
Sep 8, 2011Since it makes Windows apps work there is a possibility that also its viruses will work. I searched and a few sites mentioned such things, but none confirmed this issue.
In Wikipedia, it said this: "Because of Wine's ability to run Windows binary code, concerns have been raised over native Windows viruses and malware affecting Unix-like operating systems. Wine can run much malware, but programs running in Wine are confined to the current user's privileges, restricting some undesirable consequences. This is one reason Wine should never be run as the superuser."

As far as I know, I cannot install unless I'm a root user, and I keep my Terminal as a root user opened for hours. Also, if I were to install windows apps under Wine, I'll have to log in as a root!
So let me line the questions here:
1- Does Wine activate Windows viruses?
2- Can viruses run on their own while I log in as root in Terminal or while installing apps (whether under Wine or not)?
Slackware :: Protection From Viruses Or Spyware
Jul 18, 2011I know Slackware probably doesn't require too much protection from viruses or spyware, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to help protect it (other than Common Sense).
I ask this for 2 reasons:
1. I'm Paranoid
2. Every now and then I mistype a website I go to and it takes me to a completely different website which frightens me because of my paranoia.
So is there anything I can do to help protect Slackware, and in the rare case I get a virus is there a way to remove it directly?
Is it also possible to use Slackware (currently Master drive) to remove a virus on Windows (slave drive)?

Feb 28, 2010A friend of mine was complaining about his Windows computer being slow here lately.
I told him he is probably full of malware that slipped past his anti-virus program.
I've heard that one can use a live Linux cd to remove malware from a windows computer. How would I go about doing this?
Is it as simple as booting the cd, then using zypper to install an anti-virus program to the ram file system and mounting/scanning the hard drive. If so what program is the best to use for this purpose?
Fedora Security :: How To Viruses Infect A System?
May 25, 2010I am a very new Linux user. My first OS is Fedora 12, which I just recently installed into my laptop. So far, I am thoroughly enjoying it. I do have a question bugging my mind though. Linux systems are known to be very safe from viruses, mainly due to programmers targeting the Windows platform. In Windows, common methods for virus infections are from infected executable files, external drives autorun... ETC.
Now my question is how do viruses spread into a Linux system? And with so few viruses known to exist for Linux systems, do I really need to be aware and take precautions for viruses (For example in Windows, disabling autorun function for external drives)?

Jul 15, 2010I have a dual boot computer. The WindowsXP "side" has been infected with a rootkit virus. So far UBUNTU has not been affected to my knowledge. I have not yet been able to remove the virus from the WindowsXP "side". I am thinking of deleting the NTFS partition and have the computer fully dedicated to UBUNTU.
Now for my question. Is there a possibility that the virus resides in the MBR and that I need to "rebuild" the MBR to actually remove the virus? Even more extreme, should I totally re-install UBUNTU in the name of safety and precaution.
CentOS 5 Server :: Amavisd Not Detecting Viruses?
Feb 8, 2010I have postfix setup with amavisd and I tried to send myself an email with the eicar file however it lets the email go through to my inbox. When I restart the amavisd service, there are no errors in the log and it finds all the decoders for different file types and I also see this come up:

Everything seems to work but it doesn't scan the file for viruses. Also, I've double and triple checked and my amavisd.conf file doesn't have the option enabled to bypass virus scanning.
Ubuntu Security :: Antivirus System For Cleaning Windows Platform Viruses?
Mar 26, 2010I would like to use my Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic system to scan and clean viruses from Windows based HDD. I have KlamAV, AVG, and AVAST. I couldn't get F-prot to work. I don't find a debian package of it and don't know how to install tar.gz and the tutorials don't help a lot. Are there other antivirus solutions which are good for cleaning Windows OS but work on Linux/WINE? I wonder if I can install antivirus software in WINE and scan with no problem the hard disks.
