Is it possible to somehow open Nautilus file manager, or favorites, or places items using hotkey(s)? Simply going to the launcher just to open the file manager is annoying, and I'd really find it convenient to somehow launch the Nautilus using hotkey(s)

I recently preformed a full update to my openSuSe 11.3 x64 + gnome install. Everything was running fine before the update however post a number of features have stopped working or have changed. I used the command zypper up to update everything. The errors I've been recieving are as follows, Wastebasket
Won't open on via Desktop or Places menu. Gives the following error "Could not display "trash:" File Is Of An Unknown Type". If I drop things on the Wastebasket the files do go to /home/USERNAME/.local/share/Trash/files but I can't Empty Wastebasket upon right click as the option is highlighted out.
Computer Icon If I try to open it from link in Places menu I get the error Nautilus cannot handle "computer" locations.. The link to it has also disappeared from the left hand panel if I have a Nautilus window open.
Mounted Icons Previously I used to have 4 drives mounted;
1 network (NFS),
1 encrypted (TrueMount),
2 Windows (partitions of main machine)
Out of these only the encrypted and network drive showed on the Desktop and two Windows drives would stay mounted under /windows but have no icon on the Desktop. After the update, all these drives are on the desktop and but the only way to not have them appear on Desktop is to set Gnome config not to show any of the icons on Desktop. Although these are independent errors, they are all related to folders (at least indirectly) so I felt it was better to group them together to give a better picture of the issue.
I renamed /home to /localhome and I'm getting an error message when I run 'Places->Videos'. The error is: 'Could not open location 'file:///home/<username>/Videos' Error stating file '/home/<username>/Videos: No such file or directory.
I'm using /localhome because /home is used for automounting home directories at my work. I prefer to use a local account rather than the NIS/NFS account.
What do I modify to have this reflect my new home directory location?
how do I add items to the Places menu? In my case a Downloads folder, the folder already exists I just haven't been able to figure out how to add it to the Places menu

I can open Computer, partitions and devices, just not the first 7 folders which i think are bookmarks.

Ok, I eventually solved it. Appears I had inadvertently selected another program as default folder openenr. Just opening any folder with right click - open with - folder openenr reassigned nautilus and opens Places folders ok.
i can use it to auto arrange desktop files automaticly like in windows how can i do this with this software? and by the way what are the diffrences between ubuntu 8.10 9.10 and 10.04 dvd version?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have, in fact, stated my problem correctly. I want to make Nautilus as the default File Manager in KDE. I use GNOME on other computers, and don't like the feel of the KDE file manager on my PC. I looked online but most "solutions" are for the other way round and in either case, didn't work for me.
I tried changing the 'inode/directory' file association to Nautilus but it didn't change anything. What can I do ? (I have GNOME as a DE here too .. But I would like to know how to change the association in KDE as well)
I need some restoring my Nautilus File Manager back to its original state. I tried installing Elementary Nautilus but for some reason it was not working for me, so I uninstalled it but have been having an issue with Nautilus looking like its former self. Now Nautilus doesn't display the "tree" on the left, there are no back/forward icons, and generally looking strange.Here's a picture to showcase my issue:

I would love to use Elementary Nautilus but can not get it as my default file manager. Since I can't do that I just want Nautilus (the one that comes shipped with Ubuntu) to look and act like it's supposed to.
I installed the elementary theme and played with it. Unfortunately, I accidentally remove the icons in the file manager. Refer to attached image.How will I display the icons, menus and address bar again?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI would like to use DropBox, but I really don't want Nautilus on my system.I downloaded the source to compile, thinking it would allow me to use a different file browser, but unfortunately it seems they made it dependent on Nautilus.Is there a way to compile it using a different file browser (Thunar in this case)? And if not, is there an alternative to DropBox out there that works on multiple platforms?
View 9 Replies View RelatedWith Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 I have seen that the nautilus filemanager is extremely slow with folders that contains many files or/and folders.I made sure that "Assistive Technologies" is diable. On the filemanager preference I set all preview to "Never", tried all possible views, but the filemanager remains extremely slow. It seems like it becomes even slower when the subfolders in the folder you are viewing new files are being created by for example a program. Possibly nautilus filemanager is updating continuously ?
I use to be using debian etch nautilus file manager. With the same directories, nautilus in debain etch was working much faster. But contrary to the one in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 is is far less stable. It seems like the newer version is more stable but however extremely much slower. I was wondering if I am missing something. Or whether this is a bug. If it is a bug, then I am wondering when this is going to be solved in nautlius filemanager.
Last night I had to re-install Ubuntu. Previously, the header of the file manager had been configured up with the three buttons on the right for icon/list/compact view (see 1st image below), whilst since re-installing, they appear with the drop-down menu instead (as per the 2nd image). How do you change between these two formats? My preference is for the first of these.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm running 64 bit Lucid on a HTPC that is networked with a Windows 7 64 bit laptop. Up until this morning, sharing media between these two worked fine. When I attempted to connect through Rhythmbox to play music, the computer couldn't find the files. I attempted to access the network through Nautilus and it was unable to mount the location. So I tried the Create Launcher command and created a link of the network on the desktop. I was prompted to login and it worked perfectly This has happened once before and the only way to fix it was to reinstall Ubuntu.I would very much like to avoid that if possible as the system is setup perfectly.
I wouldn't bother with the issue if it didn't prevent me from adding my music files to Rhythmbox. I have run findsmb as well as smbtree. Smbtree returned nothing and findsmb had a dotted line with nothing underneath. Nothing has been removed. I did install security updates this morning, but since it has happened before, I am more inclined to thing it is a bug or conflict somewhere.

Using Fedora 10. I want to try different file managers for a while but can't find how to specify the default. I can open each one via the apps menu but can't find the "set as default" option.

No go. Also when I get into nautilus (using "computer" below the separation line in the places menu) I can access the bookmarks just fine.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI found today that ClamTK identifies items in /usr/share/doc/nautilus-clamscan/examples folder as possible viruses. The four files in question, "clam.exe, clam.cab, clam.exe.bz2, and clam.zip" are all part of the standard file list in packages.ubuntu.com. None are marked as executable, but are identified as binary files by less. Any ideas why these files are here or what they do, besides generate false warnings?
View 2 Replies View RelatedA potentially very dumb question but still ... I want to create a place that I can choose in the panel at the top left. So I
- go to Nautilus (tree view in sidepane) down in the folders until I see my destination on the left;
- switch to places in the sidepane and drag and drop the folder onto the places thing.
Then, the folder shows up with the name there, which is something like "Web_ABC". So I want to change it to "Web" only. On my 64bit machine, this works, on my 32bit machine, it doesn't. Whenever I change the name and press ENTER, it goes back to the old name. On the 64bit system, it only worked when I went to some other place once, and then fine, but on the 32bit one, no chance.
Is there a way to get rid of the floppy entry in the Places? This is not the bookmarks area (which is below) so I can't just right-click and remove or remove it from Bookmarks spot. I already tried commenting the floppy in fstab and then removed the entire line to no avail. Floppy drive is disabled in the Bios, I haven't had a floppy drive in 10+ years.

So I want to remove them, or at least disable them.
So, after searching Google (irrelevant or old results) so then I tried Google with [URL] but nobody has had their problem solved.
Edit: I've looked through GConf-Editor, found nothing, and have looked through the directories .Cache/.Config/.Local/.Nautilus in my home diretory and nothing came up of relevance in the first three and the .Nautilus directory was empty.
I uninstalled xmms player quite a long time ago. I think when I had hardy heron. Currently I'm on 10.04. When I right click a .mp3 file I still have the option to play with xmms player showing up. Even if I choose an "other application" the xmms player option remains stickied to the top.Does anyone know how I can remove this entry? I did a lot of searching but couldn't find a solution.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu 10.10, and it was doing well as I learned to do the tweaks for internet, etc. However, recently when I click on an item in the "Places" menu, all of the items in the top two "boxes" opened Rhythmbox instead of opening the item listed. I removed Rhythmbox, and now I get the following error message:

I have been tinkering with various Linux distros for some time but decided to get serious about getting one to work for me. This version of Ubuntu seems to be pretty good, but most of the process is still greek to me.
I have quite a lot of testing operating systems installed. Some with their own home or boot partition. Now my places section in nautilus is an utter MESS. I was not able to find any working solution how to hide these partitions.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was trying out bash scripts to see how to mount NetGear readyshare. I can do so using Nautilus and selecting Network but I wanted to be able to do so from a script. I don't know how it happened but when I clicked on Places/Documents it opened a terminal instead of Nautilus. This applies to all the folders in the Places menu but I can still get Nautilus by clicking Places/Computer and below.

I had troubles with my NTFS external hdd mounting without becoming root until I changed my fstab file. However after changing my fstab file I created an error in the place of the one I had fixed. Now since the change I have two entries of my external hard drive in Places. I'd like to know how to remove the duplicate entry.
