Ubuntu :: How To Delete Un-Identified Characters File
Mar 1, 2011
I just found out that I did mistake.I transfer 1 file into the Ubuntu Linux,but that File has a strange character. Take a look at the picture screenshot taken.free image hostingExplanation: 1) The file name is unknown, take a look at the WinRAR Archive (left window)2) The file name recognized in Ubuntu without any name, thus it appeared as Empty (right window: putty program). And via Command Line Interface, it appeared as Question Marks.

What command could I use in terminal to delete all ASCII characters? That is, delete a-z, A-Z, 0-9, and all punctuation? I have a file containing Chinese characters, and I want to remove everything else and leave just the Chinese.
I can use grep to leave only the lines that have Chinese in them, but this still leaves a lot of non-Chinese stuff on those lines. Does anyone know how I could actually remove everything that isn't Chinese?

tried sed 's/#..*//g' but as you all will know it returns string1, string2 etc.

During the installation of Ubuntu 10.04 the partitioner was wrongfully configured to see a functioning btrfs partition as ext4 (without reformatting it). Thus the installation process got stuck at 5%.Installer was run again ignoring the btrfs partition.btrfs-tools was added to the new 10.04, but the btrfs partition is now recognized ast4 with lost+found folder on it.Tried to add the btrfs to etc/fstab as btrfs but t won't mount.Can the partition/filesystem type be changed so that this is actually recognized and mounted as btrfs, hoping my data is still on it somehow?

While modifying the definition of my PS1, I saw that "[" and "]" markers should be added to help bash to compute the right display lenght. Many exemples on the web do not use them or even mention them.I searched for a solution to add them automatically, like with sed, but I didn't find any example.Are they still needed and is there a recommandation not to use sed to define PS1?

I have txt file with list of ID's and I need to insert comma in every line and then remove new line character so it'll become one long string. So to clarify, I have txt file content that looks like this.
234
5466
2356
... and so on.
but I would like this to change to 234,5466,2356,... I looked at sed and tried to wrap my head around the commands but I guess my brain isn't smart enough. its really confusing for me. I've managed to add commas to end of line (sed "s/$/,/g" filename) but somehow I can't seem to remove new line character from each line.
sed 's/[
]*$//' doesn't seem to work.

For example, I have a file called "file" like this one:
type=strongsubj len=1 word=absolve pos=verb stemmed=y priorpolarity=positive
type=strongsubj len=1 word=unique pos=adj stemmed=n priorpolarity=neutral
type=strongsubj len=1 word=absolutely pos=adj stemmed=n priorpolarity=neutral
type=weaksubj len=1 word=taking pos=verb stemmed=y priorpolarity=positive
type=weaksubj len=1 word=friend pos=noun stemmed=n priorpolarity=positive
type=weaksubj len=1 word=usually pos=adverb stemmed=n priorpolarity=positive
type=strongsubj len=1 word=purecolor pos=anypos stemmed=n priorpolarity=negative
type=strongsubj len=1 word=accusingly pos=anypos stemmed=n priorpolarity=negative
I want to add the plural for the noun, for example if find this line:
type=weaksubj len=1 word=friend pos=noun stemmed=n priorpolarity=positive
will add one more line :
type=weaksubj len=1 word=friends pos=noun stemmed=n priorpolarity=positive
where we add "s" for the word friend
I did try to do like that:
<code>
cat file | while read LINE ; do
set -- ${line}
if [[ "${4#pos1=}" == "noun" ]];then
#I tried this line but it doesn't work properly:
v3==$(echo $line |sed 's/$3/$s') #I want to find the third word "word=friend" in that line and add "s" after that word
# I don't know what command to add this new line "$v3" to the file ???
done
</code>

I found today that ClamTK identifies items in /usr/share/doc/nautilus-clamscan/examples folder as possible viruses. The four files in question, "clam.exe, clam.cab, clam.exe.bz2, and clam.zip" are all part of the standard file list in packages.ubuntu.com. None are marked as executable, but are identified as binary files by less. Any ideas why these files are here or what they do, besides generate false warnings?

I booted Debian in Live mode on a USB to try to see if the internet will work on my Linux machine before I actually install it (there is some tricky internet software where I live that I must overcome, but that will come in another thread).
Currently I have no WiFi whatsoever. When I go into the internet access menu I only get back the fact that there is a wired connection that's possible (theoretically, I should be able to also see networks to which I can connect to, but I don't). Also, it's impossible for me to actually get a wired connection going, unless I can somehow give it through my Windows laptop.
When I did some research, the people seem to say that I need to update the driver after enabling the use of non-free software; I can't do that since I have no connection in the first place.
The OS recognizes that the PCE exists (I am using asus pce-ac68), when I did "lspci" command it told me I have BCM4360 and BCM43225 chips.
I think I found the drivers here "[URL] ......" but I don't think my chip is listed there (there is no BCM4360 or BCM43225 on that list). What to do with those drivers, I mean how to compile them and install them on a Debian machine, and I'm not sure I can even install them on a live boot (but I want to make sure my internet works on the live boot before I actually install the OS).

Currently, I'm working on personal project. and I'm kinda stuck. What I want to do is that open a file, and edit that file (deleting unwanted characters). The problem arises after I deleted unwanted characters, the file still has the same length of the original one. Let's assume that we have a file with "1234" in it. I deleted "3" ( I overwrite "\0" ) so now when I check the file, it's 124. But when I check the length, the both have the same size as 4
Here is an example source code
int length, length2;
num = open("a.dat", 2)
length = lseek(num, 0, 2); // Initial length
lseek(num, 2, 0); // editing
write(num, "\0", 1);
length2 = lseek(num, 0, 2); // Final length
close(num);
When I print those values those are exactly the same. Length2 should be one less than length, but the both are 4. What's wrong in m code? Am I supposed to use different character rather than "\0"?

I am running gentoo openbox(rox file manager and desktop) I installed Digikam and Amarok. But I have problems with files which include special character in their names(such as ,, ,ğ... ) The files are shown with strange and weird characters in the file dialogs of Digikam and Amarok.
I don't have this problem in other applications. I can create files with special character included. I think some settings do not agree with KDE4. How can I solve this problem? Does anyone have an idea? I also installed KDE systemsettings program but could not find a relevant config option for character encoding.

I know GEdit has a bug which prevents it from opening a file with null () characters in it. This is a huge inconvenience for me because I frequently have to open big log files with only a couple rogue 's in them.
Sometimes I just run a quick tr -d '' < file.log > file.log.correct and open the correct file. This is a big nuisance. I would like to have maybe an external tool in GEdit that would execute the above command. I tried writing an external tool action (GEdit plugin) using just:
#!/bin/bash
tr -d ''
Input is "current document", output action is "replace current document". But this isn't working. When I open the file, GEdit shows the familiar red warning; activating the external tool with the warning showing apparently has no effect (I think the script is being called but its input/output are not set).

I am having difficulty getting sed to replace a string of text in an XML file, despite the fact that I have no trouble using grep to find that same string. Since the new string and old string to be replaced contain a lot of special characters, I thought it best to store them in variables as opposed to using a slew of backslashes:
OLD_STRING='<property name="webServiceHost">${jboss.bind.address}</property>'
NEW_STRING='<!--<property name="webServiceHost">${jboss.bind.address}</property>-->'
