Fedora Networking :: Globetrotter HSDPA Modem - Identified As A Serial Device - Fail To Get It Working
May 7, 2009
I have bought a so-called web'n'walk stick, which identifies itself as a "Globetrotter HSDPA Model". I managed to get it identified as a serial device (initially, it is detected as a USB drive), but I fail to get it working.

I have this usb stick:
The problem is that I have no clue what information I am supposed to give when configuring it through KNetwork manager. The password is disabled and I think the username should be telenor which is my ISP, the other info lines in KNetwork manager, however, I am very uncertain of, and I can't seem to get it working. I have switched from traditional setup with ifup to user controlled through Network Manager and the modem is detected. The module option seems to be loaded and the 'mode' of the stick seems also to be correct, it is not detected as a storage device at least.

I got a Gigabyte Gsmart MD800 3G/HSDPA Express card with a USB Adaptor. When you first connect it ... it picks up a CD-rom with the windows installation files and not the modem.
I followed the instructions here ...[url]
But the modem still does not appear in the network manager so i can create a Mobile Broadband connection using this modem.

For F10 patched. I'm in Honduras. The local cell / Internet provider that covers Guatamala, Honduras, El Salvador, uses an HSDPA modem marked "GBC" and is also known as the "China Bird". It's a black usb stick that looks identical to the option unit, but its definitely not an option modem.
lsusb lists it as 1c9e:1001 with no text after it. It automounts as a disk drive with typical Windows software on it. Nothing ever shows up in /dev/ttyUSB*, as I believe the disk mount causes it to not try mounting it as a modem. Dismounting it also does no good.

I recently got a HUAWEI E1630 HSDPA USB Modem and it was working fine until recently. Recently it starts to drop the connection and in /var/log/messages I can see a pppd error "Protocol-Reject for unsupported protocol xxxx". The protocol number is random. Only way to resume is to unplug and replug the device. The happens very frequently and hence the device is not usable.
To isolate the service provider end, I use the same SIM on a PROLINK HSDPA USB Modem and it works fine. Also I use a different SIM from another service provider in this device and the issue still exists.
I am on Kubuntu 10.10 with all the updates to date. Should I report a bug?

I'm trying to make a Huawei K3715 HSDPA modem work in Ubuntu 10.04.1. I plug it in, and it loads two mass storage devices (one CDRom containing the Windows software, and one 2GB drive that appears empty), but I don't really know where to go from here.
Note that I replaced the stock network manager with Wicd, as I find it more reliable in picking up wifi connections. I'm not sure if it's suitable for connecting the HSPA modem though.

I've been trying to get a USB modem stick to work with Karmic. The modem is the ZTE MF626 HSDPA on a Telstra Next G plan.I've followed all the guides and links on the forums:Have deactivated the CD autorun on the USB stick in XP lsusb is showing "Bus 002 Device 003:ID 19d2:0031 ONDA Communication S.p.A." demsg is showing "usb 2-2: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB1"This seems stable as well, ie checking periodically it doesn't seem to be disconnecting By the way,the blue light indicating network communication/modem active lights up after the device has been plugged in for a second or so.
When I go through Network Connections and add a new mobile broadband connection, there is nothing listed in the "Create a connection for this mobile broadband device" drop-down on the first configuration screen - all the guides I've read say that it should be listed here, but none say any debug steps if it doesn't.Some other guides for older versions of Ubuntu and earlier versions of the modem reference a "/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/20thirdparty/20-zte-mf626.fdi"file which I don't have.

I installed ZTE MF 626 modem in my F10 with kernel 2.6.27.12-170, i run usb_modeswitch and so far things happened normally. Watching through /var/log/messages it says that F10 detects two port device for this modem: ttyUSB1 and ttyUSB2, and in the sequence it disable port ttyUSB1 BUT Network Manager still set this port.I mean, when i connect via wvdial appointing to ttyUSB2 i get connection, but Network Manager fails to do it appointing to ttyUSB1. How to change device port in Network Manager?

Background info
1) Compaq laptop, legacy free (no COM or LPT ports, USB only)
2) The laptop owner has dial-up and can't get broadband right now.
3) The laptop is running F12 with the PAE kernel.
4) Internal modem is a Conexant modem masquerading as Intel ICHxxx chipset. All attempts at getting a driver to work for this so far have failed.
5) I downloaded a Linuxant RPM but this failed to work.
So my only option that will get the computer back to its owner is an external modem using a Prolific PL2303 USB to SERIAL adaptor cable. When using the PL2303 cable my external modem appears as /dev/ttyUSB0 For the most part this works fine. I used the steps in the solution from the following thread
[URL]
The only problem I have is getting PPP to work THROUGH the cable. I have verified the cable is the issue. HOW?
1) I have tested all the modems on another machine with F12 through the onboard COM port. All modems dial, connect, then authenticate and maintain connection until I manually disconnect.
2) I have tested all modems used on the other machine with the PL2303 and can replicate the problem on that machine.
3) I have used more than one PL2303 cable and get the same behaviour.
Using the network configuration utility / wvdial / modem lights OR kppp produces the same results when controlling the modem located at /dev/ttyUSB0 So do I
1) have to make some configuration changes to relating to /dev/ttyUSB0
OR
2) is the something in ppp that needs configuring
OR
3) is it something else altogether that I am not aware of?

On one of my machines the DVD/DVDRW/CDROM drive appears as /dev/hdc and is not identified as an optical drive by HAL. It is owned by root: disk and thus no users get permission to read/write in the device (not even those in the cdrom group). This stops playing DVDs, ripping CDs, no notifications appear when a disk is inserted, etc. etc. When I set the permissions for all to read/write from the device then users can access but still no notifications are shown.
On all my other machines the optical drive is identified as /dev/sr0 and is owned by root:cdrom . All have Slack 13.1 . Previously with Slack 12.2 this machine still had the drive in /dev/hdc but the permissions were right (I think because I added it to /etc/fstab with options for users to access it). I believe the problem is down to HAL not setting this drive to the correct group, but how do I fix it? I hate HAL, it has a mind of its own, just like in the scifi movie

I have a weird problem on my laptop. Everything works okey on PC though.
I'm using kNetworkManager on my OpenSuse 11.2 on PC.
Everything works fine there with the following settings:
1. Make a new GSM Connection in kNetworkManager and enter settings there
2. Edit etc/sysconfig/network/config file and set .....DNS_Policy from "auto" to ""
3. Enter openDNS to /etc/resolv.conf (nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx)
It works like that on my PC.
I did the same on my laptop. The modem connects fine, but the DNS'es ain't resolved. So skype etc will work, but no pages will open in Firefox for example.
What else should I need to do to make this work?
It's weird it works the SAME way on my PC, but doesn't on my laptop.

I have a creative modem blaster V.92 which I know works because I have used it on windows and ubuntu how ever I am having some problems with F11 it sounds like its dialing okay and the box pops up that says please wait when I try to connect via the network manager thing but thats all it does the box never goes away and I've looked at the modem lights thing I added to my panel and it says its not sending or receiving anything and firefox doesnt work so I am not sure what I am doing wrong here.
I got an error with the default settings so I switched the device to ttys0 and set the baudrate according to what wvdialconf said was okay which also wont connect for some reason it hangs too.. I am confused here. Has anyone successfully set up a dial up connection in fedora 11

I have F9, F10, F11 and F12 installed along with WinXP on my desktop PC. I connect to the internet thru 56K dialup modem (USR-5610B). The earlier versions of Fedora, F9, F10 and F11, all can connect via dialup modem.
My F12 installation is augmented with the following rpms - kudzu-1.2.86.2.i686, libwvstreams-4.6-5.fc12.i686 and wvdial-1.60.10.fc12.i686 (and the rpm for USR-5610B modem)
Network Configuration GUI shows ppp0 (Modem) in the Common Active Profile
However, ppp0 does NOT show up in the Network Device Control GUI, AND ACTIVATE and DEACTIVATE buttons are GREYED-OUT.

I have a ThinkPad x100e with a wireless card.Code:03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8172 (rev 10)my problem is that I can't connect to my wireless network with Gentoo. I've been running Slackware64-13.1 on this computer and now have Windows 7, Ubuntu and Gentoo installed. Slackware, Ubuntu as well as Windows 7 connect to the wlan without problems. I'm using the driver rtl8192se, the module is loaded r8192se_pci and is the same with Slackware and Ubuntu.
I've read many posts and found that other people experience problems with Realtek wlandevices as well. But I have no Idea how to get connected with Gentoo at my wlan. It looks like that the netbook is connected for a very short time, but when dhcpcd broadcasts for a lease the connection is already closed.

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 KK (UNR) on my Netbook and I use the Huawei E5830 as UMTS modem. I can connect to the E5830 through WiFo (no problem at all) and USB. How can I verify whether the E5830 is recognized as modem when connecting it to USB? It changes the mode from USB storage device to USB modem, however I think I can not access it as a modem.
