Hardware :: Installing Debian To A Hard Drive That Is Connected To The Computer By A SATA Card
Jun 13, 2010I have an old computer that I want to turn in to a backup server. I was planning on using a 1 TB drive connected by a SATA card since the motherboard only has PATA. However when looking everything I've found makes it sound like I need to install the card for it to work. I want to know if I can install Debian to the hard drive through the SATA card or not?

Aug 23, 2010I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

Oct 11, 2010I have installed Debian Squeeze on my Laptop. Everything seems to start to work fine. The only think I am not sure is the hard disk click sound only when I shut down the computer. It happens right before the power is totally cutoff. I normally do not have this sound. I presume that this maybe due to the fact that the head goes back to original position but I am not sure. Is this normal?

I can boot the pc with the drive connected using a Slax CD but can not boot using my Slackware install with kernel 2.6.33.2.I can only boot Slackware with this sata drive disconnected I want to try and recover the music and videos on hd with jfsrec. Is there a way to force the boot process with the cabling connected to this drive?

Aug 12, 2010Hard drive is connected to my Inspiron 1525 via USB, plugged in and I'm not seeing the new drive mounted. Restart doesn't fix things and manually trying to mount /dev/sdb1 doesn't work either. The drive I got is preformatted as NTFS and I've been using a logical partition formatted as NTFS as a sort of share drive between my Windows partition and Ubuntu partition, so I know I have NTFS set up properly. This is the hard drive I'm working with for reference.

Sep 10, 2010I got a sort of usb connected device(not an external enclosure) so i can connect a sata hard drive into a machine that only has ide connections but the drive is not mounting. I am not very good at mounting slave hard drives anyway ,,,,never been able to get one happening without help. I am wanting to read this drive as i killed another desktop machine(i think the mb) and i need the data off the hard drive. The drive is shown in a directory and in the media directory. Can't think of what else sorry as i am so tired from testing everything out of the machine that i killed.....

Apr 23, 2011I've got Vista installed on my notebook and I've bought an external drive (1,5 TB, but its size shouldn't matter in this case) and after formatting it I left 10 gigs for future purpose. Now, I decided to install 64bit debian on the unallocated 10 gigs. And so I did. To be precise: I have SATA drive inside my lap and hard drive (it's also SATA inside the cover) connected to my lap through USB. Boot sequence was 1)CD/DVD 2)hard drive 3)removable drive. During the installation the installer detected my internal drive as /dev/sda and my external drive as /dev/sdb. I decided to install grub on /dev/sdb (it was logical to me, since I didn't want to mess up my regular drive's MBR). Installer created 5 partitions on my USB drive. After booting from my external drive (look below*) I've got a message saying

On my internal drive there were (during the installation and running the live cd) 3 partitions detected (vista os, data, rescue disk) so I don't understand the output that ls in rescue console gave me. about booting from external drive: I did that after pressing ESC - I've got a prompt to choose which device I want to boot from - this wasn't working properly; after changing the boot sequence the grub started but with the abovementioned error message...
If there's any info about exact names/types/devices of my installed partitions needed I will run live CD and check it. If any other info is required I will provide it (I tried to describe the problem in the most precise way ) What I was thinking about: maybe there is a problem with ordering of the devices - when I boot from DVD my removable disk is treated as the "second one" and after booting from the removable disk it becames the "first one" or something like that? If any of you have any good info on how mapping of the device names works it would be appreciated, since I couldn't find anything useful or I just don't know what to ask google about.
1) How to install Debian on a removable disk (I had no problems with installing Linux on pendrive but I did that from VirtualBox and it was some time ago) OR how to install GRUB on a removable disk? (unfortunately, I cannot install 64bit system through VirtualBox)
2) What's the logic behind naming devices under /dev? How come the devices in grub have their names mapped as hdx etc and I've read that hdx are the names for IDE/ATA drives and sdx is the proper name for a SATA or USB device

Oct 25, 2010a friend of mine just given me an old 2004 IBM NetVista 8305 desktop and suggested to use Linux Ubuntu which is something new to me. So i installed it via USB memory stick & it works. After installation of the OS I am impressed with functionality & speed. when i conect the external hard drive via usb it doesn't show & i tried my usb flash disc it showed the same problem. I tried both disk in my laptop (Windows XP) & it works.

Apr 4, 2010So I tried to install Ubuntu on my Acer Aspire ASE380 desktop, and I think during the partition portion. I think I messed up the hard drive.
Now my computer won't recognize my hard drive. I've tried using the acer repair disks I made, I tried unplugging and checking all the cords and lines, I tired flashing the BIOS, I've tried using other boot disks like Ultimate boot CD, and Acer support is no help either.
I really don't know what to do now. It shows nothing in the boot setup or the BIOS set up. I've also tired the ALT - F10 for acer computers to enter and repair partition and nothing.
I just want to get this thing up and running. I'm tempted to just buy a new hard drive.

Jan 20, 2010I have 2 computers, one running ubuntu 9.10 Karmic and the other runs Windows 7.
I have several sata hard drives that I keep files on. They are all formatted ext3. I have a blacx sata to usb dock on my ubuntu computer that I use to go through files and back up and such. I have a usb to sata dock on the windows 7 machine.
When I plug in the hard drive Windows says that it has to be formatted and the drive is "raw"
I can check the drive in ubuntu and everything is right
I tried installing ext2fsd and it sees the drive but wont let me select any file type or mount it. I think because its going through the usb port.
So how can I make windows 7 see and be able to access an ext3 formatted drive thats plugged into the usb port?

However, this process (recoverjpeg) continues to find pictures and dump them into my hard drive. I am fighting an uphill battle. Is there a way to stop a program from running continuously? I removed the package, but it continues to find files on my computer and put them into my hard drive, which is a problem.

Jan 12, 2010I finally got my new internal hdd for my laptop. I plugged it in and installed windows 7 64 bit. Then I partitioned my external hdd (WD mybook 640gb), and installed ubuntu 9.1 on a 200gb partition of it. The problem is that I didn't unplug the internal hdd before I installed ubuntu. Now the computer will not start unless I have the external hard drive plugged in.
So what should I do so that I will be able to go into windows 7 normally if the external hdd is unplugged? I would also like to be able to use ubuntu when I plug in the external hdd. I wouldn't mind having to go to the boot menu and choosing the external hard drive every time I wanted to use ubuntu.
The reason I partitioned the external hard drive was because it has a lot more space than my 250gb internal hdd, and I also wanted to leave space open to use as was intended, to back up stuff.
However, now that I think about it, I wouldn't mind partitioning the internal hdd and just leaving the external blank (which I should have done in the first place).

I would like to install Ubuntu on the storage partition, but my problem is that I can't boot from CD (or anything else) because my BIOS is password protected. I obviously don't know the password. y question is: If I plug the laptop's hard drive into another computer, install Ubuntu as described above and then reconnect it to my laptop, will it work?

Dec 18, 2010i can only boot to MSDOs with floppy msdos bootup on A:. I want to install ubuntu 10.10 and completely erase HDD but the ubuntu disc won't bootup even when bios is set for cd only. This is older HP pavillion that I have retired but HDD scans out good so I thought i would run Ubuntu only and maybe put MS out of business but not having any luck with install. When booting from HDD error is system 32hal dll is missing or corrupt but HDD C: is 0 anyway. I just want to install so I can play with Ubuntu.

Apr 4, 2016I have spend way too much time on this and it still fails. I installed the debian 8.3.0 AMD64 CD1 iso image on an empty external USB 1TB Western digital My passport Ultra. I use the graphical install method and the installation process of Debian appears to go fine, except it informs me at one point I am missing some nonfree firmware for something with wifi, but that shouldn't relate to this.
*FYI I put GRUB on the external hdd, sdb in this case.
*windows 7 is on the internal hard drive and I excluded it from the boot sequence
* using laptop lenovo t410
I reboot my computer and it hangs with a flashing - in the upper right corner. Never even gets to GRUB. For awhile I thought I might have partitioned something wrong, but I am now convinced that isn't likely. I tried countless number of different partition configs. Separate /boot partition and I also tried using guided partitioning.
I mounted the partitions of the external hard drive using another OS and GRUB appears to be there. So it is there.
I know some Western digital hard drives have added priopertary firmware crap, so I tried installing on a external Seagate drive and it still hangs. I tried installing linux mint on the Western Digital drive and it works fine!
BIOS settings fine. USB settings fine. I tried booting via the boot menu and moving the USB HDD to the top of the list.
I also tried installing with Debian Live on a USB, but that actually has more problems for some reason. I can never get passed the partitioning phase because it fails to create /boot or /swap partitions saying something about how they are still in use and another thing about how the partition table hasn't been updated in the kernal yet.
It seems I might be having this same issue, not sure: [URL] ...
Ubuntu :: Transferring Hard Drive To A New Computer / GRUB Giving An Error Message?
Nov 16, 2010Today, I finished assembling my dream computer. I can boot it into the BIOS, and I checked that everything was working correctly through there. Anyway, I attempted to transfer the hard drive from this computer to that one. This computer is a Dell (blech) Optiplex GX280 with an Intel processor and integrated graphics. The new one has an AMD Phenom II processor with an ATI card and an ASRock motherboard (drastically different machines, I know...) When I try to boot, GRUB gives me an error message that says something like:

blah whatever cannot find /dev/disk/by-uuid/372de761-9577-48be-ba19-c6b2890cb229
Did I do something wrong installing the hard drive? Or is this a problem that is going to happen no matter how hard I try to make it not happen? If the second is true, will it help if I wipe the disk and reinstall Ubuntu on the new computer?
P.S. I know similar threads about transferring hard disks have been posted, but no thread has mentioned this error.
