Jul 9, 2011About a week after installing 11.04, I started noticing that my computer basically locks up after leaving it for many hours. When I come back, I cant get any programs to respond. I click on Firefox and it takes about one minute for it to finally respond. If I try to launch Konsole, it locks up too. But suddenly all programs start responding at the same time, after about one minute.
This is very frustrating and I just feel the problem is zeitgeist. Of course I am not sure because I cant even run System Monitor to check the problem since I cant run any apps for about a minute. By the time I run System Monitor everything is working again.
Ubuntu :: Computer Locks Up On Shutdown Process?
Jun 15, 2010so i just bought a new Sony Vaio laptop and things are seeming to run great. However, there is one issue: when i go to restart or shutdown the computer, the graphical interface goes away like it should, it goes to CLI and does it's shutdown routine....the problem occurs about 2 seconds into the routine, when it just stops. it doesnt shutdown or restart, but stays in the CLI with a blinking cursor. if i allow it to set for a couple of minutes, a message pops up that says something like this, "BUG: soft lock up CPU0 CPU1 stuck, blah blah". any ideas on what this is or what is causing this? the laptop has the i5 processor in it, just in case that matters

Jul 10, 2010so every time I want to watch a video or let my computer play some music anything that leaves it without input the screen dulls then the computer locks it self even in the middle of when I am watching something.I have already set every power management setting to never turn off and it is still doing it is there any thing else that controls ubuntu's automatic functions that I have missed that would let my computer stay on without locking up,I am running the most recent version of ubuntu on a Samsung NC-10 netbook if that helps

Aug 6, 2010Recently, ive been having this problem with ubuntu in which while im watching a movie and thus not doing anything else, everything locks up except for the sound (if i attempt to move mouse doens't work) and then it goes into the login screen. Previously, ubuntu would fade away into the login screen.
So is there any way to prevent ubuntu from going to the login screen if the user is not moving the mouse? non-fading login screen?
edit: oh and i also have this sometimes occuring problem where i type my password to login, it logs in, and then it immediately goes back to login screen. A second login works. probably not relevant
Ubuntu :: Switching Between Users Locks Up Computer - 10.04 And 10.10
Oct 15, 2010Since upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04, the "Switch User" functionality no longer works. I had hoped that upgrading to 10.10 might resolve the issue, but no joy. I am using 32bit Ubuntu 10.10 on a Levono R51 laptop, with three users. 9.10 was installed from a LiveCD, and I have partitioned the hard drive so that OS is in the first partition, and the three home directories are in the second partition (just in case I need to do a complete re-installation from LiveCD). Most of time only one person uses the laptop, but if a second person tries to switch from the current session and log in, they are greeted with the following;
-- a black horizontal line (approx top quarter of the screen)
-- a purple background with the Ubuntu title and 5 red dots (lower 3/4 of screen) -- but no login screen
-- moving the mouse renders a white box (approx 1x1 inches) with some black marks
The original user can recover their session with Ctrl-Alt-F7, but this essentially makes the laptop only usable for one person (one active login) unless the original user logs off.
Ubuntu :: Cannot Remember The Password For The Computer If It Locks
Nov 19, 2010I am running edubuntu in one of the classes of the school i support. My problem is that the children cannot remember the password for the computer if it locks. I have it set to auto login on the class user and I have disabled the screensaver asking for a password on resume, and disabled the powerdown options. So in theory it should stay on the desktop until they shutdown. However there is still the option to lock the computer and i am sure that they will find it and manage to lock themselves out of the computer! I am a linux beginner, but i have followed a few guides on the internet. I could really do with having their user with no password, so if they accidentally lock the computer they only have to click unlock to resume their computing.

Mar 2, 2011I just installed 10.04.2 Desktop. Full install, reformatted all partitions. Hardware: Dell Optiplex GX200 with Dell 781p monitor Dell mouse and kybd.
All appeared to install well and as expected.
The computer has locked up 4 times, now. Whenever I attempt to use the mouse to drag a window to a different place on the desktop the monitor goes half black (bottom half of screen) and I loose the ability to use the mouse or keyboard to provide input. The only recourse is to shut it down hard and boot up again.
Fedora :: Increase The Size By Pulling The Edge It Locks Up The Computer?
Jun 8, 2011First, I upgraded to F15. All went smooth. No problem. But if I pull up a terminal in KDE via menu->utilities->Terminal, I get a terminal that shows only 3 lines. If I try to increase the size by pulling the edge it locks up the computer. Functions otherwise. This is Gnome Terminal 3.0.1. X terminal works fine. So does Konsole. But not the above application from the menu.

Sep 22, 2010I have a dual-boot macbook with an OS X partition and an ubuntu partition. When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?

Ubuntu :: Delete Remaster Folder From Home Folder?
Jun 13, 2011I have Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 updated to 9.10 and have downloaded Remaster from Remastersys. I followed all of the instructions, which were simple enough. However, there must be some instructions missing as the process failed. Working with Remaster through Synaptic Manager, the iso was downloaded into my "home" folder into its own Remaster folder. It was not the iso, like you get when downloading a distro from the Internet, which downloads just an iso onto the Desktop. Inside the folder were a bunch of empty files (I know, because I opened them) and an iso . At this point the Remaster instruction stop. They do not say what to do with the other files, or what they have to do with the iso of my Ubuntu layout. So, like any other iso (once I knew which one was the iso of my setup), I double clicked on it and it ran me through the process of accessing the DVD to burn it. Which I did. I tested it and it failed with some kind of message to the effect that certain files were missing or it could not read it. So, I thought, I would have to do the 'hunt and peck' method and experiment a few times like I did with the ordinary distro downloads until I get it right. But first, I would have to dump the Remaster folder in the "home" folder since it took up so much space on my hard drive. Wrong! I come to find out it is in something called "root" and that I do not have permission to do anything with it but "copy" it. Great. Just great! Now what do I do. I tried to change permissions, but was not allowed to do that either. The only thing I could think of - and dread - was the idea of having to wipe my hard drive and go through the whole reinstall procedures, which takes me days, just because Remaster has locked itself into my system - and there is no 'back door' to get out of it.

Jan 8, 2011I'm not positive if this is in the correct section but I am hoping so. I am running dual-boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. I hunted down my files from Windows that I need for school (old papers, research, etc.) and found it under "file system" --> "host" --> "users" --> "zbollman". I can access all of my files and I'm happy now that I don't have to boot between the two constantly to get what I need. However, I tried to copy the file to my home folder, but it said I do not have enough room. I'm about 5GB short. How do I go about allocating more space so that I can copy this folder so that all of my information is easily accessible?

May 1, 2011Installed Ubuntu along with Debian on my Notebook and use Grub Manager to choose between them on startup. Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.

Jan 3, 2011Having been converted to using "Linux" about 8 months ago, and gaining confidence to try different distros, and figuring out how to 'keep' my Home folder, I've had great fun trying them out and learning as I go. The latest distro I'm trying is Kubuntu, which I really like and will keep for a while. However, when I was partitioning in the set-up, I omitted to create my home folder. Instead I now have is a partition the size of my "old" home folder, and to which I have to sign into to gain access. The files are all there so that is no problem.
1. What i would like to know is if this set-up is OK, or should I change it so that it is actually in the home folder (if so how?( a re-install?))
2. If I should decide to try out another distro in the future will this be safe to change to "home"?.

May 21, 2011I can't believe I have a problem with something as basic as this. None the less here is my issue with getting to the home folder on 11.04 On the new side bar nav thing in 11.04 the very top item looks like a folder. Hover over it and it says 'Home Folder'. Clicking it takes you to the home folder. So far so good. Now, close the home folder and be on your desktop. Put in USB drive or some other external usb drive and open it.
Once it is open click the 'Home Folder' side nav link again. It does not open. As if that is not bad enough (and downright stupid) try this. Leave you USB drive or whatever it was open, and open another application. Your broswer will do (as it's already open). While your browser has focus, click the 'Home Folder' icon again. What do you expect to see? Yep, the USB drive is now your home folder. Must be, as 11.04 presents it when you click the Home Folder icon.

May 23, 2010I installed ubuntu 10.04 LTS few weeks ago, I formated old system file to ext4 but I didnt format my old /home (in ext3 format). So after, the installation I went to Home folder.. the ubuntu created defaults folders (Pictures, Documents, etc) But there isnt my old files!, all my pictures or settings gone!..
Now, I thougth all my old data gone forever. But watching my /home partition in gparted, I see have the same Used space like before. Means the files are there but cant see them, even with Ctrl + H.
And my account name is the same like old Distro's.
