I want to install ubuntu 9.10 DVD, I have the iso image, so i try to boot the installer from hard disk by adding this lines to my menu.lst.

The Install program is failing to see the hard disk!
Now heres the really weird bit. The live cd can see the drive just fine.
I have created partitions using gparted and the disktool also sees the drive just fine but as soon as I go back to the installer it shows no hard disk!
It's a SATA drive which I suspect might be a part of the problem.
Is there a way I can install without the install program?
Is there a way to make the install program see the drive?
This is ubuntu 9.10 desktop.
I try to install Ubuntu on my new HTPC. I start Ubuntu with the Live CD and it boots fine. Then I want to start installing Ubuntu on my hard disk.Unfortunately the installer does not see my hard disk which has 1 empty ext4 partition. However, it can be seen and managed in GParted.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a ssd cosair harddisk with both usb and sata connecters. If I connect it with sata anything is working fine, and I managed to install Fedora core 13.
But I also want to be able to use the harddisk when it is connected with usb and that causes problems.
When I boot the Fedora Core 13 dvd It can't detect my usb harddisk.
When booting in install mode it just don't detect the harddisk.
When booting the dvd in rescue mode it don't detect the harddisk, and it don't create any entries in /dev/ for the harddisk. It is like there is no disk at all.
I have tested this on 3 different computers, so it is not a problem with my specific motherboard. So either it is a problem between my harddisk and Fedora Core 13, or there is some problems with the usb drivers in the boot image used by the Fedora core 13 dvd.
The disk is working fine if I connect it via usb to an existing Windows install, so the usb connection is working.
I installed Fedora core 13 with the harddisk connected to sata and then re-connected the harddisk to usb. It then boot up, but complain about missing root filesystem. Most likely caused by missing usb driver in my kernel.
But anyway, what I really want is the ability to boot from both sata and usb, so I can take the harddisk with me and boot it on other computers with usb.
So is there a command which allows me to build an kernel image which can boot from usb or am I trying to do something which is not really supported?
I did update my fstab to use LABEL=myroot
There is 1 Windows partition(NTFS) and 1 linux partition on the disk. (No seperate /boot partition and no swap)

Before I try changing CD drives, re-formatting the hard drive (again), or cleaning the CD drive, I must add that Xubuntu did open. I got rid of all traces of the previous operating system (WinME), and Xubuntu seems to work pretty well. The installation stopped at 41% of copying files. Should I aim for a finished installation or is this fine?

The only possibility of those is the CD being bad. But I've used it before, recently, and it was fine. I will burn another one from my other computer and try, but it shouldn't be doing this.
Question: If I plan to only use Ubuntu on this computer (no dual boot) should I make the /,swap and /home partitions all Primary or some logical, or does it even matter?
Having trouble installing 'Squeeze' 6.0.1a-amd64-netinst on a new AMD64 system.The installer boots and runs fine until it gets to hard disk detection. Then it hangs for about 20 minutes showing a blue screen, during which time the HDD-activity light flickers every 5 seconds. Eventually it says it can't detect a hard disk, and displays a (longish) list of possible drivers; no idea which, if any, would suit.Anyone else installed (successfully or otherwise) on this combo?

I start to create the partitions manually because I want to add it as a third operating system on my PC. Anyway I create the 4 partitions /boot - / - /var - /home. I try to create the partitions at the end of the hard disk not the beginning although I am sure that there is no error in the hardware but the same message. Lastly I change the boot to be created in sda 9. The same problem, when I do everything. I download Linux mint another operating system and do the same points. The same error message appeared by the way the boot is being damaged after restarting and I have to fix it from suse linux cd.

I want to install Debian 5.0.4 from DVD. But the installer is not showing any partitions, it says entire hard disk is blank. But I ran 'fdisk -l' in the console, it shows the partitions correctly.
This afternoon I finally had the time to run this Ubuntu KK CD and load over my old xp/Jaunty J partition. I had previously run the distro. through the CD, without harming my old partition. On doing so the system consistently reported my Toshiba ATA 120 gig hard disk had multiple bad sectors and was failing. As a true end user (who mucks only when necessary with the CLI) I just figured writing over the partition would end the failure. To be sure I ran Memtest8.66 v2.11 from the LiveCD; everything checked out fine. So I installed KK.

However, when I boot to the ubuntu CD, I can use the menus from the bottom, and select the language when initially prompted, but I can't select any of the menu options except for boot from first hard drive.

When I rebooted my PC, I got a message that there was no boot manager. Even cntl-alt-delete did not work, so I unplugged the pwr cord and battery and reconnected them. I interrupted the boot to get to BIOS and found that Ubuntu was first in the boot chain. Apparently, when it is, no boot manager is found. So I removed the usb from the pc and was able to boot into W7.

View 5 Replies View RelatedMy system has Windows XP Pro SP2 installed on /sda1 and originally a 10.04 on /sdb1-3, now upgraded to 11.04. The Ubuntu system works fine (teething troubles with nvidia drivers on upgrade but fixed now), and the Windows system shows up in the grub menu, but when it's selected, I just get `GRUB Hard Disk Error' and nothing else. Windows installed properly, and booted successfully until I installed Ubuntu in the first place. I can still access the files on that drive from within Ubuntu.
I've tried fixboot in the Win Recovery Console, which sounded like it did something, but didn't fix the problem. This problem isn't new to grub2, by the way - I just haven't needed Windows in a year.
Today I decided to give Fedora15 a shot, mainly because of Gnome3, and so decided to install it over my Ubuntu installation. This is my partition scheme:Two NTFS partitions for Windows;

I'm having installation issues with linux. I'm trying to set up a dual boot with vista and linux. I prepared my computer by backing up my files and partitioning my hard drive, leaving 20GB for linux. I downloaded Linux Mint 7, and booted from USB (using the universal USB installer from pendrivelinux.com). All good, entered into linux and installed by following the prompts (selecting use largest unallocated partition to point linux to the partition). At this stage the screen cleared to just leave me with the desktop background.
I patiently waited for it to reboot which never happened. So I waited for 20mins or so, then shut the computer down because I couldn't think of what else to do. When I restarted (without using the livecd/usb) it just went straight to vista. I did a bit of reading and found it might have been something to do with vista taking over grub, and some of the tutorials suggested downloading EasyBCD. So I did that, here's the summary:

Now when I turn my computer on, I get options for vista and linux. Vista works fine, but if I select Linux Mint 7 I get an error that reads "cannot load from harddisk, insert systemdisk and press any key".
i started ubuntu from 9.04 now using 10.10 on my laptop. problem started when my laptop motherboard got bad beyond repair, and i had installed ubuntu 10.10 on it along with windows 7 (grub, dual boot). now i have pc running windows 7 and installed ubuntu 10.10 using wubi. i want all the settings of my laptop ubuntu 10.10 (programs installed, themes, softwares other configurations etc) to be transferred to this new ubuntu (installed using wubi) on my pc. how to do that? i have attached my laptop hard disk to my pc and am able to boot that installation on my pc, but now i have decided to remove laptop hard disk and use the same settings on pc hard disk.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have been frustrated attempting to get Grub2 to boot a Debian Live system from hard disk. Have set aside a 4gb partition /dev/sda1 to contain the Debian Live and some other recovery tools. I actually have them all working from a 4gb USB stick successfully, but getting it to work on my HDD has proved challenging. On USB, I have PartedMagic, Gparted, Grml, and of course my standard 6.01 Squeeze. I have also managed to get the Debian Live booting from that USB stick. Very slick.
However, I can NOT get Debian Live to boot from my HDD; altho all of the others above boot fine. Have tried it two ways - one using an iSO image, which is how it is done on my USB stick. The other attempt is to copy the entire contents of the ISO to a directory.
Here are my directory structures:
debian_live_gnome_squeeze_i386- contains the following: debian-live-6.0.1-i386-gnome-desktop.iso initrd.gz initrd.img vmlinuz which is how it is laid out on my USB stick debian_live - contains the files from the ISO image The error I get is something like "panic unable to find live filesystem" My grub.cfg snippet for the two methods I have tried - the 2nd menuentry is similar to how it works on the USB stick.

I have two internal harddisk. Harddisk 1 has ubuntu, fedora installed and harddisk 2 has ubuntu installed. I normally connect either one, and use it. How can i always keep connect both harddisks, and at the start, select from which harddisk to boot? Or it's not possible?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 or 10.10 on my laptop, which also has a 200 GB USB drive attached. Now, I am trying to go back and use the installer to repartition the disk. I noted that the scan of the external drive took about an hour, because I was on a webinar while it was happening. It would be nice if Installer noticed and asked if I really intended to sit by for an hour while an external drive was scanned.
When I went into the partitioner, there was another scan of several minutes, and then when I downsized a partition on the internal drive from 76G to 46G, there was yet another lengthy scan on the external drive. So, I know about this, and it's user error that I forgot to disconnect the drive, but it would still be nice if Ubuntu with some clue about what's most likely my intention, i.e. to NOT install on an external drive.
I have trouble installing ubuntu on my desktop machine. I had Mint before, reinstalled Win7 and wanted to upgrade to newest release as I didn't use Linux for some time.

I am attempting to install on a HP ML110 box. It has 2 SATA drives installed. From the live cd I can do fdisk -l and see both drives, I can see both from GPated but during the actual install it doesn't see any drives in which to install.

I've just tried to set up the installation of ubuntu, got to the partitioning section and only my external hard drive is being picked up. The internal hard drive is a 1TB SATA drive plugged into a 6GB/s DATA port on my m/b (Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD4 running Intel i5 760 processor). I'm probably going to try the alternate CD to see if that works, but does anyone know if this is a common problem for any of my hardware? (I did a google but couldn't find anything).

Trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 Server 64 bit from USB. At the point of detecting disks, the installer only recognizes the USB. The installation was created using Pendriveinstaller ver1.8.0.1 per Ubuntu Server web site instructions. I have the drives configured as 2 separate raid 0 arrays using the bios raid configurator. The drives have been initialized. (Tried before with a single Raid 1 array, but had same issue and since have read Ubuntu support for hardware raid is not great, so was going to bypass hardware raid for now).
I've seen some chatter on here about opening a terminal at this point and removing dmraid but don't see an option for terminal only shell.
I'm trying to install jessie on a new computer, but the installer does not see the hard drives. I copied the DVD-1 iso to a usb stick with dd (also tried the netinstall) and it boots, but when I get to partitioning, it only sees the usb drive. If I go to another virtual console and run dmesg or fdisk -l, all drives are seen correctly.
Back up a little - at first I tried the on-board raid, but when the installer couldn't see the drives, I went back into the bios and reset the sata mode to ahci. I've got it set to use bios/legacy OS, or whatever it's called, fast boot is disabled. Even if only one drive is connected, the debian installer does not see it. Then I read up on the fake raid I was trying to use and decided to go with software raid. Can't do that if there's no hard drives listed in the partitioner.
My own installer (refractainstaller) does work, and I've installed jessie with it a couple of times onto one drive, but I really wanted to use raid and lvm, and my installer doesn't do either of those things. No optical drive, but if that's the only way to install, I'll pull the one from my current box and use it for the install. I think I still have a blank CD or DVD lying around.

I'm running into a weird problem when trying to install from the live CD I'm running. Basically, I have two hard drives: sda, a 160GB HDD which has Windows 7 on it, and is the one I would like to put kubuntu on; and sdb, which is a plain 500GB NTFS file system I keep all my personal stuff on.When I get to 'disk setup' and choose 'install side-by-side', it defaults to sdb instead of sda and I can't change it. I've created a 20GB partition on sda, which is where I want to put kubuntu, but it still defaults to sdb. I also can't figure out how to install to where I want using the advanced partitioning menu.

I tried to install Ubuntu server 10.04 and 10.10, both 64 bit, having similar results. Also I have tried enabling and disabling the RAID card. On 10.04 installer hangs preparing disk partitioning phase at 43%, on 10.10 hangs at the same stage 45%. Must I download something and apply before that phase?
