I have a jpeg file on my Windows system that won't delete. However, when I try to boot into safe mode to delete it, I can not get into the menu to select "Safe Mode". F8 just boots me right into Ubuntu.I have Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10 on an Acer Aspire 5520.
View 3 RepliesI attempted to install Catalyst 10.11 for my ATI HD 2600XT and the system now only displays lines and a large block of pixels where the mouse would go. CTRL-ALT-F1 kills the system and does not provide a command prompt. This is a single installation, not dual-boot, but there is no Press Esc to access the Grub menu during startup so I cannot choose safe mode. I attempted to get into Recovery mode using the flash drive that I used to install the system and it tells me there is no Recovery kernel (I used the 64-bit Desktop installer, not alternative). Does anyone know an alternative to get into the Grub menu other than ESC during bootup? Alternatively, do I need to download the 64-bit Alternative ISO and create a new boot disk with it so I can access Recovery mode? Is there something else I'm not thinking of?

View 2 Replies View RelatedRecently I installed ubuntu aoongside windows 7 in dual boot and everything seems ok. however, i wanted to boot into windows safe mode to resolve a possible driver issue there. problem is, grub menu shows the the normal windows boot option but not the windows safe mode boot option. but i know the boot option exists because it booted once when i accidently shut down windows incorrectly or something and restarted it.
so, how do i boot into windows safe mode?
I really hate to ask this. I have been searching for almost 2 days for a comforting answer but still not satisfied. I have a new Dell Studio 1555 64 bit system with Windows 7. I really like running dual boot systems and this is my first W7 machine. Is it vaguely safe to attempt to install Kubuntu 9.10 on this system? It still smells new and I'd hate to wreck it this soon, LOL. The vast amount of info on this forum along with the sheer number of posts makes it difficult to sift through sometimes.

The problem is that the os will work fine when booted from CD in fail safe mode and can be installed from there but when out of fail safe mode the system begins to boot but freezes and will do nothing more.

When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)

I was trying to figure out how to get an external monitor as my primary monitor on my laptop when i made a change that cause the desktop environment to keep logging me out. I got it into safe mode and resolved the issue but i have my account set to not ask for a password on login and it keeps booting to safe mode now. I have tried logging out and typing my username to get the option to select the normal desktop but as soon as i enter my username it boots bake in as safe mode. The option to require a password on login is not working in this mode. Anyone know how I can get this corrected?

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter I upgraded to 11.04 I now can only boot in safe mode. When I boot up in regular mode everything on the desktop is showing but I cant open anything. When I try to boot up in the classic mode, which is what I prefer, I just get my wallpaper on my desktop but no icons or anything. I didn't mind the safe mode at first but I now realise I cant install any updates which isn't good. I have 222 updates that need installed.

Currently when I boot from USB and select installation, the monitor goes off. So I guess safe graphics mode is the way to go.
Now that i have ubuntu how can i boot into vista's safe mode with networking? I tried F8 at start up but it brings me up to a boot device screen. The windows boot loader has been replaced by GRUB so now i can's select safe mode with networking. The only other option i tired is to go to msconfig and change it to safe boot but theres no option for safe mode with networking.

I have used a windows boot disk to try and sort any issues but this has not worked. The problem is he never made the recovery disks by the manufacturer so I cant reinstall windows. I can access all the files on the hard drive when running Ubuntu. So what I need to know is it possible to run the manufacturers program to make the recovery disks from Ubuntu.

I'm anticipating several issues, first Grub, can I get it going again after the Win7 upgrade without messing with my current Ubuntu install? the next issue is Win7 will want to make a "boot" partition, does this create any problem with partition names for Ubuntu? can this be solved by making the windows "primary" partition and using an extended partition inside that? is there anything I'm missing?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI had Ubuntu/Windows 7 dual boot. I decided not to use Windows anymore, so I deleted it's partition (using Gparted) and formatted it to ext4. Then I did update of grub.Here are few issues I am having now:
1. The new partition won't automount
2. I can not use new partition. It has only one directory - lost and found. I can't copy data there.
3. Grub still has Windows 7 option (it doesn't work of course)
4. Grub fails to boot (it says it didn't find /windows partition), so I have to always skip that manually
I have Ubuntu dual booted on the laptop I'm on, with Windows 7. I'm currently running 10.10. Is it safe to update Ubuntu to the latest version, despite it being on a dual boot? I'm not sure how it would work, but I imagine it'd be fine...I just wanted to double check first.

I have read that i could just format linux partition and than boot with windows cd and fix motherboard, but i do not have windows cd on me. Can i use another tool, that would allow me to fix the "damage" grub did? Acronis or something like that?
To avoid to complicated answers, just give me a solution that works without criptic linux commands, i get lost in that.
Also, i am actually a supporter of open source and free software, but i also think that linux is nowhere near being easy to use for the general population, no matter the microsofts conditioning. So i guess ill give it a go at 11.00 again to see whats going on
I have a dual boot laptop (Acer Timeline 1830) working fine. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows 7 Home Premium Edition. I need to upgrade Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional (Thats Winblows for ya.). View 7 Replies View Related i have a dual-boot system running with Fedora 11 and (formerly) windows XP. The windows xp has become unbootable, and i installed Fedora on a separate partition so i could run the computer. is there a way i can reinstall windows XP to the other partition using Fedora 11?
Note: The reason i installed fedora Is because i dont have a Windows XP Boot cd, and i believe there is a backup somewhere on the hard drive.
I dual boot windows and ubuntu on a particular machine and I'm looking for a comprehensive backup solution. Basically I'm after a single tool to clone the entire drive and do incremental backups with little to no concern for the underlying os.
My first instinct is to set up rsync to do the back up from ubuntu and just mount the windows partition when it does its thing so it backs that up too. Does that sound reasonable or am I missing something? At face value this seems like a reasonable answer, but I can't help but feel like something is "off" with that approach.
