Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Will Not Work While Grub/windows Installed?

Aug 5, 2011

Ive been running windows 7/Ubuntu dualboot for some years now and never had any problems. Some months ago I got a new Patriot Inferno ssd. Ofc the first thing I did was to installl windows 7, it had no problems, ran fast and smooth. Then when I reinstalled grub I started to get error when trying to start windows, the logo never apeared and all I got was the message "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software"Status: 0x00.00F" "Info: The boot selection failed because a required device was inaccessible.". It does not matter what order I install windows and ubuntu in, or how many times Ive tried to reinstall grub. Windows 7 will not work while I have grub/windows installed. Right now Ive got them installed on separate drives, ubuntu on the ssd and windows on a partition on a 1tb hdd. Unfortunately I need to have windows for .net programing and gaming..

Ubuntu Installation :: Installed Grub On Windows Partition?

Mar 8, 2011

I just installed ubuntu on a partition on my laptop that already had a windows7 partition. First I had Kubuntu installed, but I decided to just try Ubuntu instead. I did things the right way when I installed Kubuntu and I could switch between OSes on reboot. Then when I installed Ubuntu I accidentally put grub on /dev/sda1 instead of /dev/sda. I didn't even notice for a while because I never felt like I needed to go back to Windows until I felt like playing starcraft 2. That's when I noticed that when the boot options screen appears and I select Windows, the screen goes black, a cursor flashes in the upper left corner for about a second, then the boot options screen reappears.

If I boot using my windows 7 cd and go into recovery, get a command prompt and type Bootrec.exe /FixMbr and Bootrec.exe /FixBoot, the options appear to complete successfully, but then when I reboot, I get a permanent flashing cursor.

If I follow that by inserting my parted magic cd and running testdisk and overwriting the mbr, I get back to the first situation where the boot options screen will appear, but the windows boot loader just returns me to the boot options screen. I can get into ubuntu, at least. Whenever I run testdisk I can't replace the boot with the backup boot because I'm pretty sure it's identical to the flawed one.

I tried GParted from Live CD to allocate the space, but it shows the complete partition as single partition for Windows and Ubuntu of which I could not able to allocate the specific space to Ubuntu.I don't want to reinstall the Ubuntu again as there's a lot of office work has been done.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installed 10.04 On A New Hard Drive - Windows Won't Boot

Jun 11, 2010

So I JUST installed 10.04 on a new hard drive for the third time. I had it completely wipe the hard drive and install ubuntu itself (so i couldn't mess anything up). Well NOW it won't even boot up ubuntu much less my windows hd.

So the setup is, my first harddrive which is 640gb and has my windows on it, and then my second harddrive which is 80gb and has my freshly installed ubuntu 10.04 on it. Neither will load. I don't even get a loading screen, I just get a flashing line after my mobo's splash screen.

I ran some boot loader info script and one of the first lines was

Code:

No boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda

Ubuntu Installation :: Create A Windows 7 Boot Disc From A Pre-installed PC?

May 5, 2011

I have a Lenovo laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. I would like to dual boot Win 7 and Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

In my old laptop I had an OEM Win XP disc that I bought specifically for dual boot purposes (didn't want the pre-installed vista). This only has a one PC usage though unfortunately.

how to make a windows 7 boot disk? I made a RECOVERY disk already, but I don't think that will work as a boot disk right? Particularly if I completely wipe out or swap out the HDD (which I might do).

fyi: I NEED Win7 for a few special programs for my school. WINE will not work and VirtualBox puts to much strain on my computer.

Fedora Installation :: Make A Virtual Machine Using Exiting Installed Windows 7 On Laptop HD?

Dec 4, 2010

I have a Lenovo T500 laptop with 4 GB RAM. I have installed Windows 7 64bits OEM on my laptop HD. I also installed Fedora 14 on my USB External Hard Drive which it has it own boot sector. I don't want to have a dual boot. So if I plug in my external HD to my laptop and turns the machine on, it automatically my Fedora comes up, other wise my windows 7. (I set up start-up boot drive , first to USB External HD and then internal HD)

I installed KVM (Virtual Machine Manger) on my Fedora 14 and I am trying to install windows 7 64bits OEM on my Fedora 14 as Virtual Machine. After setting everything and start installing windows form CD, I got BLUE SCREEN right after "WINDOWS FILES LOADING..." finished. it shows me a blue screen and then it will stop

Questions:

1- How can I fix that problem?
2- Is ther way to make a Virtual Machine on my Fedora using my exiting installed windows 7 on my laptop HD?

Ubuntu Installation :: Windows 7 Overriden By Old Windows XP Entry - After Reinstall Grub

Oct 7, 2010

I am actually facing a vague problem here. I was previously running Windows XP and Ubuntu . Ubuntu was installed Windows XP The problem is

1. First I tried to do some disk partitioning. That ended up with some error.

2. Ignoring that, I went to install Windows 7 over Windows XP but I was not able to proceed with Windows 7 , because the partitions were corrupted.

3. So I used Ubuntu LIVE CD (Grub was lost at this point )and used 'testdisk' and recovered the partitions.

4. Now installed the Windows 7 successfully.

5. Now again I moved to Ubuntu Live CD to write the GRUB. After which I tried restarting

6. Now Ubuntu is booting perfectly as before. But the problem is with Windows

7. The GRUB loader instead of showing Windows 7, it shows Windows XP !!! . and there is no other entry for windows. When I tried opening it, it says "error, cant read file" and further inout moves back to the grub loader list again.

"How do I change the entry to Windows 7 from Windows XP and boot Windows7 successfully " I tried it a couple of times, same thing happens . So how to change the entry?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Windows And But With Ubuntu Already Installed On A Separate Hard?

Jan 25, 2011

I just bought a new Windows 7 machine and want to install Ubuntu 10.10 for a dual boot environment. There's a lot of info describing how to do this, but it all describes re-partioning the Windows drive, burning Ubuntu on a CD, inserting that CD, etc. I had a dual-boot Windows and Ubuntu machine that just died on me. Windows was on one hard drive and Ubuntu - along with my entire software development environment - was on the other. As far as I know both drives are fine.

When my new (Windows) machine gets here I want to open it up and stick in the Ubuntu hard drive from my old machine... but then I'm not sure what to do. I'd really like to be able to boot to that hard drive (or the Windows one), just like I did before. It seems that this should be simpler than installing a fresh Ubuntu from a special CD, after all, everything is already expanded and working on the hard drive. Can someone give me some pointers that will help me solve this problem?

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot - Windows 7/10.4 - No Windows Now After Upgrade

Apr 30, 2010

I just did an upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04 and now I can't boot into Windows 7 on this dual boot desktop. I usually do a clean install but with a laptop and desktop a copy of Windows 7 and Ubuntu on each machine it's getting very tiring with 4 os's so opted for the upgrade this time.

During the installation there was a window that game up about upgrading grub and what devices to install it on. The help box was not very complete and seemed to say to click all the check boxes which included the main drive and it's partitions including windows. During the install somewhere it said something like grub could not be installed on one of the devices which I think was sda6 which is probably the Windows 7 partition.

So how would I get the option of booting into Windows 7 on startup as now I only get a blank black screen when I click on the Windows 7 option upon bootup? I hope I don't have to reinstall one or both os's again from scratch as this is becoming to much work to do on two systems every 6 months, especially with the amount of programs I have installed.

Ubuntu Installation :: 10.04 In A Second Partition Of The Hard Drive - Windows XP And Windows 7

Oct 24, 2010

I have Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows XP running each one in a partition of two different hard drives. I want to install Windows 7 in a second partition of the hard drive where Ubuntu is running. Windows 7 did not see the hard drive where Ubuntu is running. So I understand that I need to format the partition where Ubuntu is running, install Windows 7 and later on Ubuntu 10.04 which will create the boot for the three systems. But I want to backup Ubuntu's installation, and after installing Windows 7, install the backup. So I will need to add the file for the dual booting. How can I do it? Is it there any piece of software that could create the three booting option that I need?

Ubuntu Installation :: Trying To Dualboot Windows 7 - Doesn't Recognise That Windows Is There

Jan 3, 2011

So I shrunk my Windows 7 partition. Now I have a 450GB partition with Windows 7 on it and a 50GB partition for Ubuntu that is unallocated space currently. So when I go to the setup for Ubuntu, booted into using my USB flash drive, it doesn't recognise that Windows is there. It thinks that the hard drive, all 500GB of it, is free space. Going into GParted, it also seems to think that the entire hard drive is a blob of unallocated space. According to tutorials online, this shouldn't be happening. It should recognise the two different partitions. So I went into Computer in Ubuntu (Live) just to double-check and indeed all my Windows files are there and I can still boot into Windows just fine.
