Ubuntu :: How To Recover Grub2
May 27, 2010Once again an update broke my Lucid When I start my laptop, I can't see the options to choose a kernal or Windows as I used to see before. know my grub is deleted or overwritten after recent automatic update (on 27th May 10). Now I have a bootable 10.04 CD.Please let me know how to recover the grub2. I don't want to reinstall my linux or windows.

Feb 28, 2011I am trying to recover Grub2 after reinstalling Windows 7 on my computer (which always takes over everything). I downloaded the Ubuntu 10.10 image from here and have mounted the image using the given instructions.
After restarting my computer, changing the boot order, etc., the computer reboots and hangs at "Verifying DMI Pool Data............" I have done everything correctly, so what exactly is causing this problem? Should I restore Grub2 in some different way, then?

Mar 7, 2010i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

Feb 2, 2011Sorry my previous question wasn't that informative so adding more. I had windows partition and free partition for Linux installation. I got installed windows7 and it installed fine, When I tried installing Ubuntu, I remember selected default options. I gave me default option as it clearly said "1. If you have another operating system (e.g. Windows XP) and you want a dual boot system, select the first option: "Install them side by side, choosing between them at each startup." I thought it would keep Windows as it is and I hit proceeded for installation.

At the end I am disappointed that I cannot see Windows boot option (Dual boot) It just gives Ubuntu option. I kept 50 GB free space for Ubuntu. This screen continues to come up. I tried to load Ubuntu with Wubi but it would not install... I have now installed it from a DVD but the load screen keeps putting me back to the screen above. I can't load from the Windows CD it won't recognize it even if I change the bios setting.Windows 7 seems to be running fine... and Ubuntu seems to have loaded fine... so how can I get my Windows boot screen to go and load Ubuntu as my OS?

Apr 17, 2010I installed 10.04 and Grub won't boot into Windows7. I attempted to fix the problem through several different methods and nothing worked and I fear I made the booting problem worse than it was to begin with. I can boot into Ubuntu just fine, just not Windows7. Black screen with a cursor upper left hand. Windows7 repair disk does not help and using Windows7 command line repairs did nothing.
So here is an idea I came up with: Is there any way I can back up the Windows partition exactly the way it is, reinstall Windows7, and then somehow lay down all that information directly over the install to make it exactly like it was?
I doubt it is that simple, but is that possible? Like basically unhiding all the hidden files, copying them into a folder on my Ubuntu installation, reinstalling Windows7 and just copying them all back?

I originally had Windows7 and Ubuntu, but I wanted to have another Windows7 OS to keep clean for gaming. Of course, when installing Windows7 it wiped out Grub2. I've reinstalled Grub2, but now I'm having a problem in that when I choose Windows7 in the Grub menu, it directs me to the windows boot manager to choose one of my Windows7 partitions to boot. I'd like to configure Grub so I can choose which Windows7 installation I'd like to boot from there. I've tried added custom scripts to point grub directly at the partition where each installation is located, but it always directs me to the windows boot manager. How can I bypass that?

Previously when i have dual booted win7 and ubuntu10 and linux mint i always get "grub rescue" when i try reinstall my linux partition, and it ends with i have to do clean reinstall of both windows and linux, which is a major pain in the rectum area
Is there a way to make my linux go back to original state without reinstall, and if i reinstall, how can I do this without loosing win7 partition and get this awful grub rescue message.

Fedora is now running on the laptop. But, at boot time, there is NO BOOT MANAGER. The laptop just boots straight away to Fedora.

Jun 10, 2010Suffice to say I had a dual boot at work with an essential windows 7 and non-essential linux install on it, and randomly upgrading the distro made windows7 unbootable. Cue a missed days work, much embarrassment and ear bashing from those who are convinced Linux is written entirely by communists and hippies. In the end I had to re-install windows, which cut off the ability to boot to ubuntu - although I've left the existing ubuntu partitions as they were.
Although I can get away with allocating a few partitions to ubuntu, I can't really justify fiddling with the MBR based upon this experience. I need a fast boot and persistent data for doing anything further with ubuntu at work, so I'm wondering whether a safer bet would be to setup a usb stick with enough grub to boot to the existing ubuntu install? Not a full usb distribution, just enough to boot into the existing install? how this would be doneIs it really just a grub-install /dev/sdXX (where XX is the usb)?

The installation was successful, but, now when I try to boot Windows nothing happens (apart from an indefinitely blinking '_'). I tried to do startup repair from my Windows 7 DVD but it is not detecting the hard disk. When I tried to run chkdisk /f from the command prompt it said that the disk is write protected. Later, on using diskpart and list volume the only volume detected is the CD/DVD ROM.

But now that the disks filesystem is not NTFS, Windows cannot regognise the disk as installable and cannot convert the filesystem. Jan 5, 2011I installed a bunch of updates on one of my 10.04 systems before the holidays and then shutdown. Upon my return the initial boot greeted me with the "low resolution graphics" dialog and no functional mouse or keyboard. I dual booted to 8.04 and replaced /etc/X11/xorg.conf with the contents of the xorg.conf.failsafe in the same directory and rebooted. Got the 800x600 VESA Gnome desktop but still no mouse or keyboard. I tried booting with a different brand mouse (was MS, tried Logitech trackball) but still no good. I have to press the reset button to reboot
It is not a hardware issue as mouse, keyboard and 1920x1200 graphics all work fine when I boot 8.04, 6.06 or Windows 2000. None of the four 10.04 kernels listed in my boot menu makes any difference.
