Ubuntu :: Installed, Now Windows Won't Boot?

Mar 11, 2010

I already had Windows XP on the HDD. I installed Xubuntu 9.10, and used the installer to cut out a 10 GB chunk for Xubuntu. Xubuntu boots correctly, but I only get a blinking cursor _ when I attempt to boot Windows. I'm pretty much a newbie with Linux, although I did take a while to play around with the Live CD before installing - so I generally know where things are, but know very little about what is actually going on behind the scenes. Can anyone give me some advice for what steps I need to take to remedy this? The goal is to be able to boot whichever OS I need at the time. Also - I'm sure that my old stuff is all on the HDD - I can access it, but strangely enough, I seem to need to try to open that file system with like Firefox or something - it tells me I need to mount it, I mount it, then it becomes accessible..

Software :: Two Grubs - Installed Ubuntu 10.04 - Boot Using Windows 7 Boot Manager ?

May 6, 2010

I've just installed Ubuntu 10.04.

I'd like to boot using Windows 7 boot manager (I don't dare to put grub in the MBR).

I've used EasyBCD to add a new entry for Ubuntu.

[url]

Then I added Grub to /dev/sda3

And I get this:

[url]

The problem is that it always shows (hd0,0) instead of (hd0,2). I must change it every time I boot. I've tried to install grub again but I always get the same.

And another problem. After that Grub menu it deesn't load Linux but it loads a second grub menu [url] that loads Linux properly.

I guess I've installed two Grubs.

How can I remove the first Grub menu (Grub4dos) and make Windows 7 load the second (the good one)? or how can I remove the second one and change (hd0,0) to (hd0,2) in the second?

General :: Windows 7 Won't Boot After Installed And Deleted Ubuntu 10,10

Nov 29, 2010

i got this new computer with Windows 7 on it and promptly installed Ubuntu 10.10. it didn't recognize my graphics card or screen, and i was too lazy to figure it out. (xorg.conf was missing?) anyway, I went back to windows and deleted the partition that linux was on. When i reboot the computer, all it shows is "grub rescue>" and a command line. as you can probably tell by my writing, i am a teenager who lives under my parents' roof and they bought me this computer, and now it doesn't work...so i used my backup disk and i reinstalled windows back to factory settings, and it still shows up with a grub command line. so does this mean that my win os is misplaced or something.. I don't know if this matters, but i have a Gateway with Intel Pentium dual-core processor.

Ubuntu :: Won't Boot After Installed Gparted And Deleted My Windows Partition

Jan 25, 2010

10 yr old Dell laptop with NO WORKING DRIVES. i was dual booting xp and xubuntu when i decided it was time to cut the cord. so i installed gparted and deleted my windows partition. now it won't boot. my assumption is that i never installed grub. i got a usb to ide cable so i can access the hard drive from my desktop (xp home edition). i read that grub should be in a folder called "boot". i see on my hard drive that i have: "disks", "winboot" "install", "uninstall-wubi.exe", and "xubuntu.ico". if i expand the "disks" folder, there is a "boot" folder containing another folder called "grub", but the folder is empty. is this where i install it? am i an idiot and missing something stupid? where do i download grub if i need it?

Ubuntu Installation :: Installed 10.04 On A New Hard Drive - Windows Won't Boot

Jun 11, 2010

So I JUST installed 10.04 on a new hard drive for the third time. I had it completely wipe the hard drive and install ubuntu itself (so i couldn't mess anything up). Well NOW it won't even boot up ubuntu much less my windows hd.

So the setup is, my first harddrive which is 640gb and has my windows on it, and then my second harddrive which is 80gb and has my freshly installed ubuntu 10.04 on it. Neither will load. I don't even get a loading screen, I just get a flashing line after my mobo's splash screen.

I ran some boot loader info script and one of the first lines was

Code:

No boot loader is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda

Ubuntu Installation :: Create A Windows 7 Boot Disc From A Pre-installed PC?

May 5, 2011

I have a Lenovo laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. I would like to dual boot Win 7 and Ubuntu or Linux Mint.

In my old laptop I had an OEM Win XP disc that I bought specifically for dual boot purposes (didn't want the pre-installed vista). This only has a one PC usage though unfortunately.

how to make a windows 7 boot disk? I made a RECOVERY disk already, but I don't think that will work as a boot disk right? Particularly if I completely wipe out or swap out the HDD (which I might do).

fyi: I NEED Win7 for a few special programs for my school. WINE will not work and VirtualBox puts to much strain on my computer.

I originally had my full hard drive as a full Ubuntu partition but I then re-sized that and installed Windows on a new partition. Now I guess the boot sector got overwritten and I don't have a choice to boot either Windows or Ubuntu. I know I have to reconfigure GRUB or another boot loader to allow the choice but I am not sure of how to go about that.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Installed Over Windows Boot Loader ?

Jun 18, 2010

I have two hard drives, one (hard drive C) is 250GB and is the first hard disk. The second (hard drive Z) is 1000 GB and is the second hard disk in order. There used to be windows XP on C and Windows 7 on Z.

Because I installed 7 to Z from XP which is on C, it put the Windows Boot Loader on hard disk C. I didn't know this until now.

When I installed Fedora, I gave it all of C to install on. That messed up something because the Windows Boot Loader was on that drive, so grub didn't list it in the OS's to load. I had to add it manually, and got it working correctly so it had an entry for the partition that Windows 7 was on. This didn't work however, because Windows 7 on drive Z didn't have it's NTLDR on that drive, so now I have a 7 installation without an NTLDR on Z and a Fedora install on C. I am sure grub is working properly because when I change the load order of the hard drives to load Z first, it gives the same error:

NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete to restart

or something along those lines.

Is there a way to get Z to have an NTLDR again and be able too boot Windows 7? I really hope I didn't mess up my entire 7 installation because of this.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Windows And But With Ubuntu Already Installed On A Separate Hard?

Jan 25, 2011

I just bought a new Windows 7 machine and want to install Ubuntu 10.10 for a dual boot environment. There's a lot of info describing how to do this, but it all describes re-partioning the Windows drive, burning Ubuntu on a CD, inserting that CD, etc. I had a dual-boot Windows and Ubuntu machine that just died on me. Windows was on one hard drive and Ubuntu - along with my entire software development environment - was on the other. As far as I know both drives are fine.

When my new (Windows) machine gets here I want to open it up and stick in the Ubuntu hard drive from my old machine... but then I'm not sure what to do. I'd really like to be able to boot to that hard drive (or the Windows one), just like I did before. It seems that this should be simpler than installing a fresh Ubuntu from a special CD, after all, everything is already expanded and working on the hard drive. Can someone give me some pointers that will help me solve this problem?

Part 2 - if it is possible that after Reinstalling windows i can boot into ubuntu that is previously installed via Wubi on different drive that please tell me, how could i do that. ****if it is not possible than please show me the way to do backup all the data, software, plugin that is downloaded.etc. I need to back up the whole Ubuntu because after installing windows i am goin 2 format the ubuntu drive and make it to Ext4 that is currently NTFS and then i will install the Fresh 9.10 on that.

Ubuntu Installation :: Dual Boot Ubuntu And Windows 7 ( Which Is Already Installed )?

Dec 5, 2010

What I want to do is dual boot Ubuntu and Windows 7 (which is already installed), and am wondering if I have to use the Ubuntu installer for windows to do this. I do not want to wipe my hard drive in order to install Ubuntu, and I need to install the 64-bit version. I'm wondering if I can choose which version to install if I use the Ubuntu installer for Windows. Should I just install it using a different method, or will I be given a choice on which version installs? Never mind, it looks like the normal installer has an option to install alongside another operating system, I just didn't read through the page thoroughly enough.

A recent hardware or software"Status: 0x00.00F" "Info: The boot selection failed because a required device was inaccessible.". It does not matter what order I install windows and ubuntu in, or how many times Ive tried to reinstall grub. Windows 7 will not work while I have grub/windows installed. Right now Ive got them installed on separate drives, ubuntu on the ssd and windows on a partition on a 1tb hdd. Unfortunately I need to have windows for .net programing and gaming..

Debian Installation :: Installed Dual Boot 6 RC2 / No Boot At All

Apr 17, 2011

Before the installation, I had triple boot of WinXP, Win 7, Ubuntu 10.10. As you can guess, the main boot-loader was grub. The second is Win 7 boot loader, and there it gives the option what to choose, load XP or Win 7.I made a decision to remove Ubuntu and install Debian(you know better than me why I did). So first, I searched a guide how to un-dual-boot. It told me to delete the two partition that Ubuntu use(swap and ext4) and write to MBR the win 7 boot-loader(using EasyBCD), so I delete them and use EeasyBCD. At this stage, I had 2 partitions: NTFS for XP and NTFS for Win 7, and the Win 7 boot-loader(and XP) worked pretty well.I install the latest testing of Debian(6 RC2) from DVD1 using this guide, except I choose to use the graphical installer, ext4(not ext3 as there), install the desktop environment, and choose to install grub(even know it didn't asked me). The swap partition I set is 3 GB because my RAM is 2 GB, even know that ubuntu set it in the past to 2 GB.The installation went pretty well, just when come to grub package, it says that there was an error with installing grub package(it didn't told me what), I had no choice, so I choose to skip over grub/lilo and finish with no boot manager. I was thinking to myself: "So I couldn't install grub, at least I have the Win 7 boot-loader(which contain XP loader), and maybe Win 7 boot-loader will recognize Debian too.". But I end up with no boot at all.It told me than when choose not to install boot-manager that I need to load /vmlinuz and give it the parameter root=/dev/sda4(my deb partition).I think that if I could install grub, I could load all my boots("sudo grub update" right?).How can I fix it?

Ubuntu :: Windows Crashes Since Installed It

Jul 23, 2011

want to say that I was a windows user just about a week ago. Then I installed ubuntu on a USB flash drive, just for fun, and now it's installed as main OS on my laptop and the only thing I use windows for is syncing my iPod touch with iTunes. (Yes, I know about other possibilities to copy music to it from ubuntu, but I want to continue using iTunes.)

Now my main problem is that since I installed ubuntu (10.10 Maverick Meerkat), my windows (Windows 7 Home Premium 32 Bit) sometimes crashes during startup. Sometimes it boots up perfectly normal, then in some cases it crashes at the first attempt to boot and when I retry and choose "Start Windows normally" it works just fine and then there are the times when it crashes everytime I try to boot. I wasn't able to find out why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I also removed all USB devices during startup but that didn't change it.I noticed that when I start Windows in safe mode first, it works, then I restart and choose normal mode and it works too.Has anybody experienced this issue and/or knows a way to fix it? It's just annoying to have to try several times just to be able to keep my iPod synced.
