Ubuntu :: Install The New Nvidia-xconfig-1.0 Utility?

Apr 2, 2010

Nvidia now provides a utility to easy configure the X server configuration file (besides the manual configuration). It is provided as a tar.gz file and it can be downloaded from the official Nvidia driver download website.

I used the standard procedure to install such files:

unpack the archive
change directory as root into the unpacked archive
./configure
make
make install

but it did not work.

I am using Linux Ubuntu. My video card is GeForce 4 MX and the driver is 96.43.13.
The archive does not provide any install instructions.

Ubuntu Installation :: Location Legacy Nvidia-xconfig Or Using Nvidia-gfx-71 In 9.10

Jan 2, 2010

I have 9.10 running on an old computer with a Nvidia Vanta-graphics card. Unfortunately these appearently aren't supported by 9.10, since the oldest nvidia drivers in the repository for this build are nvidia-gfx-96, while vanta seem to supported up to nvidia-gfx-71. After some hours of following tutorials, fiddling around and testing I managed to install the 71-drivers. But, the nvidia-settings require nvidia-xconfig to be around, which is embedded with later driver-builds but not with 71.

Fortunately I found a tar.gz at this page, so I downloaded it... but -and here is finally my question- where am I supposed to extract it to and are there other things I should do to get it working? Or, if I'm overcomplicating things, feel free to give me directions on what to do. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything on Ubuntu 9.10 and nvidia-gfx-71, hence I'm messing around for hours by now.

Fedora :: Errors When 'make Xconfig'

Sep 7, 2010

I'm building a file server, but before the admins move this to the networking forum' this IS about the kernel.

Anyway, I'm building a file server... a very basic thing. not much to it at all.. which is kinda the root of the problem... this is an old Dell (ugh! I know!) Dimension 8300. it's running a 2.6 GHz Celeron (Northwood die, so single-core), with (at the moment) a mere 256 MB of RAM... so I wanted to build a kernel that really minimizes its presence in my minuscule amount of RAM using this guide, I have gotten so far as the actual Kernel configuration. wherein it says to cd to your kernel's directory and use the 'make xconfig' command... but when I do this, it gives me the following error:

Code:

so I've never compiled my own kernel before, so I haven't a clue what's wrong, or what I need to do

CentOS 5 :: Can't Install Nvidia Drivers (Unable To Load The Kernel Module "nvidia.ko")?

Jul 28, 2009

So I have been trying to install these drivers forever and after going through a million forum posts and Google searches I have been unsuccessful. The process I have been trying starts as such: I hit ctrl-alt-f1 and then login as root. i then change to run level 3 by doing /sbin/init 3. After that's done I cd to desktop and do sh NVIDIA-LINUX-x86-185.18.29-pkg1.run --kernel-source-path /usr/src/kernel/2.6.18-128.2.1.el15-i686

If I don't give it the source path it can't find the source tree. Eventually I get the error: ERROR: Unable to load the kernel module 'nvidia.ko'. This happens most frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from

General :: Run "make Xconfig" For Cross Platform?

Jun 15, 2010

I'm trying to run the kernel configurator for my embedded ARM platform (PXA310) but so far I can only get it to run for my build platform, an i386/32 machine. I've tried running "make ARCH=arch/arm/mach-PXA3xx xconfig" in various combinations, but the maker always complains that it can't find the target "arch/arm/mach-PXA3xx". Doesn't matter what order I put the arguments on the command line.

I also have CROSS-COMPILE defined in the environment correctly and can otherwise build for my embedded target. I just can't run the config tool; I need to enable USB On the Go.

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.4 - Cannot Install Nvidia Driver ?

Aug 3, 2011

Nvidia h/w:Quadro FX 570

Installed 11.4 yesterday. No problems. Installed Gnome 3 today and it goes into fallback mode. Assuming that the graphics driver might be the culprit, I attempted to install the latest nvidia driver.

Added repo ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.4/ in Yast2.

Did a refresh and it complains that it cannot access installation media at the above. Paste the above in Firefox and it gets there OK.

One-click method also fails.

Never had a problem with updating nvidia driver before. Not sure what to check. I did delete and add with no success.

BTW, the other defined repos in Yast2 work fine.

Ubuntu :: Can't Install Nvidia Driver?

Apr 13, 2010

I've tried linux many times in the past, and I'm always irritated to the point of formatting it, shredding the disk, and cursing it while enjoying my windows. Anyhow, (for some reason beyond me) I'm trying it again. Let me start off with the fact that I am very very irritated with how difficult this is becoming (why the hell can't nvidia just make a driver I can install without all of this crap?). OK, so I know how to cd to a directory, login as root. Any time I try to install the nvidia driver, it tells me I need to close X. I've tried going into the recovery terminal and it tells me this. I've also tried the command "/etc/init.d/gdm stop" and then it just takes me to a black screen.I can't do anything from there but push ctrl+alt+delete to restart. So,if anyone can give me simple steps that would be great. I don't want to learn how to use the OS, I just want to install this driver so I can read text and more than half of my monitor is displayed on,I'm on linux hardy heron 8.04

Ubuntu :: Can't Install Nvidia 190 On Karmic

May 16, 2010

I just recently upgraded from Jaunty to Karmic and now I can't seem to get the nvidia drivers to work properly. It originally came up in low graphics mode and said that the 190 driver was installed, but it didn't work properly so I disabled it.After rebooting, the 190 driver will never properly activate. I tried launching jockey-gtk and it tells me to see /var/log/jockey.log which shows:

Code:

2010-05-16 08:54:58,054 DEBUG: Installing package: nvidia-glx-190
2010-05-16 08:54:58,778 ERROR: XorgDriverHandler.enable(): package or module not installed, aborting

I wasn't able to get the 185 drivers either until I did a manual apt-get install nvidia-glx-185. Then it eventually worked and nvidia-xconfig got my xorg.conf updated and correct. So now the 185 drivers are installed (though jockey-gtk does NOT show those drivers in green -- it doesn't think that I have any of the drivers enabled so all of the little bubbles show up as grey). The 185 drivers are definitely installed though (185.18.36 to be exact) and Compiz is enabled, desktop effects are on, etc.

Any idea what is up with this? Why doesn't jockey show the drivers that are installed and more importantly, how come I cannot install the 190 drivers? I tried doing it via apt but this is what it tells me:

Code:

$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-190
[sudo] password for bdmayes:
Reading package lists... Done
