I can't seem to be able to run make xconfig under Gnome. It throws an error:

I'm building a file server, but before the admins move this to the networking forum' this IS about the kernel.
Anyway, I'm building a file server... a very basic thing. not much to it at all.. which is kinda the root of the problem... this is an old Dell (ugh! I know!) Dimension 8300. it's running a 2.6 GHz Celeron (Northwood die, so single-core), with (at the moment) a mere 256 MB of RAM... so I wanted to build a kernel that really minimizes its presence in my minuscule amount of RAM using this guide, I have gotten so far as the actual Kernel configuration. wherein it says to cd to your kernel's directory and use the 'make xconfig' command... but when I do this, it gives me the following error:

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.
I'm trying to run the kernel configurator for my embedded ARM platform (PXA310) but so far I can only get it to run for my build platform, an i386/32 machine. I've tried running "make ARCH=arch/arm/mach-PXA3xx xconfig" in various combinations, but the maker always complains that it can't find the target "arch/arm/mach-PXA3xx". Doesn't matter what order I put the arguments on the command line.
I also have CROSS-COMPILE defined in the environment correctly and can otherwise build for my embedded target. I just can't run the config tool; I need to enable USB On the Go.
So I followed the instructions to add the rpmfusion repos and add the protection to to the repos as well.
But, when I try to add the nvidia drivers as talked about on [URL]
My terminal says 1 package excluded due to repository restrictions. Now my Fedora display is wacked and I can't run nvidia-xconfig at all.
how to make Alt-Tab useful in Gnome 3?Also I would like to switch between workspaces horizontally. It does not make sense to lock it at one option. Plus switching horizontally is much quicker since no finger movement is involved.

i have an IBM R51 laptop with Pentium M 1.5Ghz, RAM 512mb and intel 855GME graphics. I'd like to install fedora 15 with gnome 3 and take advantage fully of its capabilities! as far as I'm concerned i should upgrade my RAM and graphics.. could you please suggest me an option, for the RAM and the graphics, that will be compatible with my existing hardware? My clock seems to be about :40 seconds off... before i upgraded from f-13 i had my time controlled by ntp(how to verify ntp is enabled) ? even with network time = yes, it seems to lag a little.
I figured out the network time. it is under a whole separate menu for some reason.
Is there a way to get weather/ temperature like in classic gnome ?

I really enjoy using both ubuntu and fedora. I am finding that I am in some ways perfering fedora over ubuntu, but think that the look and feel of fedora is awful. Basically I would like to make fedora 14 look exactly like Ubuntu (11.04) with unity disabled so technically it is gnome 2.32.1 I really like the "unity-icon-theme" ubuntu offers, as well as the Ubuntu-Mono-Dark
now in ubuntu say I wanted to download the unity icon theme, I would type in:
sudo apt-get install unity-icon-theme and it takes care of the rest by itself,
now in fedora I type: sudo yum install unity-icon-theme Of course it does not work, how would I manually go about copying the unity-icon-theme and or Ubuntu-Mono-Dark theme from Ubuntu over to fedora? I am unsure if "Controls" and "Windows Borders" use the same method, but I would also like to manually copy and enable them in fedora. So the end result is a Fedora box looking exactly like a Ubuntu box?
installed F12 and noticed that the volume control applet is now all Pulseaudio rubbish, not Alsa like gmixer used to be. So now I don't seem to be able to mute my speakers when I'm using my headset, which in F10 I could do by just muting LFE/Center.Note I don't want the speakers to be disabled when I have the headphones plugged in (like Jack does) I just want to be able to control volume of the mixer channels individually - as sometimes I'll be playing music through the speakers and will receive a Skype call and want to mute the music, but also don't want the Skype sound coming out of the speakers - just the headphones.
I've tried setting up 4.1+input, 5.1+input, 4.0+input etc; but for some reason, even though the PulseAudio mixer thing has 5 individual sliders, they do nothing as they "jump" back to 100% when you slide them - even with the channels unlocked. gmixer and alsamixer do the job, but pulseaudio is the applet and only seems to control the master volume, not the individual channels. Any ideas - or perhaps a way to make gnome-volume-control revert back to actually being gmixer?
I cannot right click with my mouse on the gnome applications menu to get the properties/edit menu option. This is on F12 on 64bit.
Instead I get: "help, remove from panel, lock panel". I dont have this problem with anything else on the top bar.

Turns out I have to install package alacarte and then go to System > Preferences > Main Menu
I just installed Gnome Shell in Ubuntu 11.04 through UGR Linux and everything works fine! The only problem is that I cannot run make and make install. I get the following errors:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora 15 on a new laptop and I am using the Genome desktop. There are some applications that will not the allow you to resize the window. Some examples of this are Libre Calc, gnome-tweak-tool and a window in the package installer. In all these cases when you right mouse click on the top of the active window the "Resize ALT-F8" is grayed out and is not selectable.This is real problem when I'm trying to install the Perl-IDE-for-vim package because the list of dependencies is so long the confirm button is off the bottom of the screen and I cannot resize the window to get to it. There is also a similar issue with the tweak tool where some of the field are chopped off because the window is too small. As for Libre Calc I just don't like a window taking up the whole desktop.

I've installed F12 twice now. After completing the installation and getting all the updates via YumEx, my network trouble begin after a reboot. I am not able to login as root under gnome so I can't see the services panel.
Tried to reinstall 'NetworkManager' after the fact but of course I have no network connections so I may have made the problem worse. I hate to reinstall and repeat the same troubles over again as it consumes a lot of time. I don't know where to begin.
am unable to add new workspaces to the panel and by default it is four only. When installed fedora for the first time I could add up to 36 orkspaces (fedora 10). I have tried deleting adding back the panels but no use

Tried to install nvidia driver and package, nvidia-glx, nvidia-kernel-dkms and nvidia-settings installed.
When trying to install nvidia-xconfig i have: error, not found.
Now I have only login prompt, no GUI, have tried to search, but have no clue.
If i run nvidia-xconfig, it will say driver not found, and the next time i boot, it will end up in a terminal. why is it so? (by the way i recovered from that using backup of xorg.conf). And i dont think now the nvidia-driver is present.
View 14 Replies View RelatedSo I think I did something stupid here, was following the instructions on the debian howtos to installing nvidia, and after I did apt-get install nvidia-xconfig my power went out and when I went to restart my computer, whenever I tried to startx it gave me some cannot connect to X session, so I left it over night and went to bed, this morning it took a long time to start, longer than usual. and my browser stuff in my fluxbox was reset(book marks and favorites).
View 8 Replies View RelatedNvidia now provides a utility to easy configure the X server configuration file (besides the manual configuration). It is provided as a tar.gz file and it can be downloaded from the official Nvidia driver download website.
I used the standard procedure to install such files:
unpack the archive
change directory as root into the unpacked archive
./configure
make
make install
but it did not work.
I am using Linux Ubuntu. My video card is GeForce 4 MX and the driver is 96.43.13.
The archive does not provide any install instructions.
When i logged into a gnome desktop i got this message: "The GNOME session manager was unable to read file:'/home/(desktop name)/ICEauthority'. If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." What commands do i use for that? or do i need to do something else?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI use gnome-mplayer 1.0.0 and Totem Movie Player 2.30.2 to view videos Both read subtitles well from srt files. But both are not able to read {a6} command in the srt files.
NOTE:- {a6} command serves the purpose of putting the subtitles on top of the screen, making it possible for subbers to display lyrics/additional footnotes on top, while at the same time, having the dialogues to show in their usual position.
Is there are way to force either of them to read the special commands properly?
just did a fresh testing install using the debian installer. i have gnome and an nvidia card. i installed the nvidia driver using the debian way outlined on the wiki. then i ran nvidia-xconfig and it generated an XF86Config file instead of an xorg.conf file. everything works, but shouldnt it be an xorg.conf and if so, maybe it isnt reading the XF86Config file at all?

When I select it the shell exits and displays the graphic "exploding" and then it just sits there. Shutdown works fine; just no reset. Any ideas? I've installed from the DVD. I booted the live CD and it resets just fine so I know it's no my hardware

Now i know nvidia 96 has problems with xorg 1.9 but i installed the updated nvidia 96 driver that supports xorg 1.9 through maverick-proposed and i dont have nvidia control panel under system->preferences and if i types sudo nvidia-settings in terminal i get it says im not running an nvidia driver but the hardware driver reports it as activated but not in use and nvidia settings also tells me to run nvidia-xconfig but it says this when i do sudo: nvidia-xconfig: command not found
