just did a fresh testing install using the debian installer. i have gnome and an nvidia card. i installed the nvidia driver using the debian way outlined on the wiki. then i ran nvidia-xconfig and it generated an XF86Config file instead of an xorg.conf file. everything works, but shouldnt it be an xorg.conf and if so, maybe it isnt reading the XF86Config file at all?

Now i know nvidia 96 has problems with xorg 1.9 but i installed the updated nvidia 96 driver that supports xorg 1.9 through maverick-proposed and i dont have nvidia control panel under system->preferences and if i types sudo nvidia-settings in terminal i get it says im not running an nvidia driver but the hardware driver reports it as activated but not in use and nvidia settings also tells me to run nvidia-xconfig but it says this when i do sudo: nvidia-xconfig: command not found

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.
Tried to install nvidia driver and package, nvidia-glx, nvidia-kernel-dkms and nvidia-settings installed.
When trying to install nvidia-xconfig i have: error, not found.
Now I have only login prompt, no GUI, have tried to search, but have no clue.
If i run nvidia-xconfig, it will say driver not found, and the next time i boot, it will end up in a terminal. why is it so? (by the way i recovered from that using backup of xorg.conf). And i dont think now the nvidia-driver is present.
View 14 Replies View RelatedSo I think I did something stupid here, was following the instructions on the debian howtos to installing nvidia, and after I did apt-get install nvidia-xconfig my power went out and when I went to restart my computer, whenever I tried to startx it gave me some cannot connect to X session, so I left it over night and went to bed, this morning it took a long time to start, longer than usual. and my browser stuff in my fluxbox was reset(book marks and favorites).

View 2 Replies View Relatedfresh install of 11.04 on a built system (frankenstein leftovers), 2.something ghz, 1gb ram, a host of drives, and a 64mb nvidia mx440 with svideo out. Boots up, looks pretty, something about unity not finding 3d graphics (fine, i don't really want it, just more fancy gui crap to suck cpu cycles) and runs fairly well. so I think, cool, svideo out, old 52" rear projection....HTPCish. "Lemme get this thing hooked up to the tv, what a great idea" So, I start looking around and find all kinds of wrong posts about not Natty, and not my video card, and I try this n that,and it doesn't work. I'm all about reading the forums, but I can't find the right info for my sitiation, and I'm overwhelmed/irritated.
Long story short, I added some repository ppg something, and then dl'd and installed the "nvidia-current" driver. After a reboot, I fire up the nvidia gui, and it tells me I have no xorg.conf and to run a particular command in terminal to make one. So I did it. and after another reboot, my system just hangs at "ubuntu" with the four (five?) dots. Reboot, recovery, something something something, safe graphics, backup your xorg.conf? yes. reboot and all is ok now. still no nvidia support. Now I'm reading the internet machine about the xorg.conf being old school, and how I have to make a monitor.conf file with config settings. only problem is it tells me to go to x11/xorg.conf.d/whatever. I have no xorg.conf.d directory. So what's the deal? How in the hell do I get the nvidia driver installed (I think I got that), configured (I have no clue), and running (yeah, I just saw a flying pig)?

I believe the computer is trying to use the on-chip intel card instead of the nvidia card because "dmesg | grep video" specifies "pci 00:02:0: Boot video device", "lspci | grep 00:02.0" gives me "VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)
I have googled this issue all day and have not found a solution that works for me. nvidia-xconfig does nothing as doesn't "nvidia-xconfig --multigpus=on". Is there a way to specify which video card my laptop uses on boot? Maybe which my xorg.conf uses?
I will try to add my xorg.conf file later on.
I have installed Kubuntu 8.04.2 on a USB stick with persistence to keep any changes I make after a reboot and it works fine. I then installed the 185 Nvidia driver to give me higher resolutions and it works fine.
But each time I reboot, my updated xorg.conf is replaced with the default xorg.conf that ships with that version of Kubuntu and a backup is made of my updated xorg.conf (the correct one) which looks like xorg.conf.20100409135913. I have to put the backup xorg.conf back in place to get my Nvidia driver to work with the correct screen resolutions again. Otherwise my screen resolution is too low.
What could be causing this behavor? I'm sure it not the persistence feature of the USB stick failing since a backup is made of my original xorg.conf.
I might add more information. The xorg.conf that gets changed after a reboot says "This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using # values from the debconf database." #

Lately I see a lot of posts/threads on NVIDIA cards and disfunctioning desktops. People rely on older posts and howto's, and run sax2 after driver install (either from repos or "hard way"). Symptoms also appear after updating 11.1 to 11.2 The problems IME are 99% related to conflicts with an existing /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which in 11.2 has become obsolete, though it will be read and used if it's (still) there.
On openSUSE 11.2 we have hardware autodetection and -configuration for everything. So no need for an xorg.conf to configure the X-server. on 11.2, follow this, if NVIDIA driver is installed correctly, but still no proper desktop experience:

I also understand that the xorg.conf can be partial. If it is missing some sections, these will be taken from the corresponding xorg.conf.d section config file. Currently I'm using a xorg.conf generated by nvidia-settings in one of my home machines, due to a dual-monitor setup. After generating xorg.conf, the device sections are:

I'm running the ubuntu based Green OS and cant get my video card properly configured. i've already gone through the forums to figure out what i need to do to get my ATI card working but my system wont let me access the xorg.conf file. i can see it using the the GOS file editor but it wont let me save the modifications. when i attempt to edit from a terminal window with su privelages it tells me that /etc/x11/xorg.conf does not exist. i've even tried booting into recovery mode and using the root instead of the sudo command. nothing i've tried will let me open the file.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have 9.10 running on an old computer with a Nvidia Vanta-graphics card. Unfortunately these appearently aren't supported by 9.10, since the oldest nvidia drivers in the repository for this build are nvidia-gfx-96, while vanta seem to supported up to nvidia-gfx-71. After some hours of following tutorials, fiddling around and testing I managed to install the 71-drivers. But, the nvidia-settings require nvidia-xconfig to be around, which is embedded with later driver-builds but not with 71.
Fortunately I found a tar.gz at this page, so I downloaded it... but -and here is finally my question- where am I supposed to extract it to and are there other things I should do to get it working? Or, if I'm overcomplicating things, feel free to give me directions on what to do. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything on Ubuntu 9.10 and nvidia-gfx-71, hence I'm messing around for hours by now.

I just did a net install on an old powerpc G4 and it seems pretty successful.except i cant change any of the monitor settings from the control panel in gnome (or LXDE)its showing 'not recognised' and only allows 768 x 1024 in very restricted colour.I dont think there is a hardware problem:
- the monitor is a generic old CRT which has worked fine with everything before this.
- the display card is an AGP 32Mb - original with this G4 and was working.
- the computer works great in Mac OS10.3 - (but OS10.3 doesnt support flash or up to date web browser any more, hence trying debian).

I noticed that Sid/unstable (Gnome - kernel 2.6.33 - xorg 1.7) does not use xorg.conf file for X driver. The X driver seems to get detected automatically by the kernel and xorg, which is done perfectly even with 3D support. But I noticed that it uses the xorg.conf file for the input devices. When I renamed it, the keyboard and mouse were disabled. Is there a way to get the input devices detected automatically also and get red of xorg.conf file completely?

I'm trying to get the latest Lenny running on some old hardware (a Winterm 3150se). Everything is working just fine except for two things.
When Gnome starts, it comes up at 1600x1200 resolution, which is too high for my monitor. It shows a portion of the right side of the display, If I select Screen Resolution, it gives me a few standard choices, but if I pick one, it acts like it's trying to honor my request, then comes back as 1600x1200 again.
My xorg.conf file had no references to Modeline, so I added a 1024x768 Modeline, not really understanding where the selection I was given was coming from. Anyway, it didn't help.
I can see in the log file that right after the entry about using xorg.conf, it says 'Module "ddc" already built-in', which must have something to do with it?
My hardware supports all the usual video formats, at least it does when it's running WinCE. Is there a way to force the use of xorg.conf or can someone tell me why DDC is acting like it's "read only"? Is DDC a file somewhere?
My other problem is that the Winterm refuses to not try to boot from the flash memory thumbdrive even though it's formatted as a non-bootable device - it's my SSDisk. I have to boot without the drive in, then slip in in just as the boot process exits the blue start screen. I can live with this problem, since it might be dumb hardware.
I just system-upgraded (testing) to kernel 2.6.38. All seems ok, except that a few things I added to xorg.conf in the past (basically, keyboard language switch) have no effect anymore. My xorg.conf is still there, it is still the same as before, but the changes I did in XkbdLayout section have no effect. It seems xorg.conf is not used anymore. I assume new version of xorg uses a different configuration file, but I'm not sure.

My terminal says 1 package excluded due to repository restrictions. Now my Fedora display is wacked and I can't run nvidia-xconfig at all.
The owners manual of my monitor gives me the following informations:
When editing my xorg.conf, do I have to add the automatically 'keyword' ? (saw nothing about it in man xorg.conf or man nv)
I have installed debian testing squeeze, I have such issues, so no X11 working when startx

Nvidia now provides a utility to easy configure the X server configuration file (besides the manual configuration). It is provided as a tar.gz file and it can be downloaded from the official Nvidia driver download website.
I used the standard procedure to install such files:
unpack the archive
change directory as root into the unpacked archive
./configure
make
make install
but it did not work.
I am using Linux Ubuntu. My video card is GeForce 4 MX and the driver is 96.43.13.
The archive does not provide any install instructions.
