i am having a problem with my just recently upgraded ubuntu 10.10 ive search google and forums for well over 4 hours with no luck so im asking here. Now i know nvidia 96 has problems with xorg 1.9 but i installed the updated nvidia 96 driver that supports xorg 1.9 through maverick-proposed and i dont have nvidia control panel under system->preferences and if i types sudo nvidia-settings in terminal i get it says im not running an nvidia driver but the hardware driver reports it as activated but not in use and nvidia settings also tells me to run nvidia-xconfig but it says this when i do sudo: nvidia-xconfig: command not found
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have 9.10 running on an old computer with a Nvidia Vanta-graphics card. Unfortunately these appearently aren't supported by 9.10, since the oldest nvidia drivers in the repository for this build are nvidia-gfx-96, while vanta seem to supported up to nvidia-gfx-71. After some hours of following tutorials, fiddling around and testing I managed to install the 71-drivers. But, the nvidia-settings require nvidia-xconfig to be around, which is embedded with later driver-builds but not with 71.
Fortunately I found a tar.gz at this page, so I downloaded it... but -and here is finally my question- where am I supposed to extract it to and are there other things I should do to get it working? Or, if I'm overcomplicating things, feel free to give me directions on what to do. Unfortunately I couldn't find anything on Ubuntu 9.10 and nvidia-gfx-71, hence I'm messing around for hours by now.
So I followed the instructions to add the rpmfusion repos and add the protection to to the repos as well.
But, when I try to add the nvidia drivers as talked about on [URL]
My terminal says 1 package excluded due to repository restrictions. Now my Fedora display is wacked and I can't run nvidia-xconfig at all.
Nvidia now provides a utility to easy configure the X server configuration file (besides the manual configuration). It is provided as a tar.gz file and it can be downloaded from the official Nvidia driver download website.
I used the standard procedure to install such files:
unpack the archive
change directory as root into the unpacked archive
./configure
make
make install
but it did not work.
I am using Linux Ubuntu. My video card is GeForce 4 MX and the driver is 96.43.13.
The archive does not provide any install instructions.
Tried to install nvidia driver and package, nvidia-glx, nvidia-kernel-dkms and nvidia-settings installed.
When trying to install nvidia-xconfig i have: error, not found.
Now I have only login prompt, no GUI, have tried to search, but have no clue.
If i run nvidia-xconfig, it will say driver not found, and the next time i boot, it will end up in a terminal. why is it so? (by the way i recovered from that using backup of xorg.conf). And i dont think now the nvidia-driver is present.
View 14 Replies View RelatedSo I think I did something stupid here, was following the instructions on the debian howtos to installing nvidia, and after I did apt-get install nvidia-xconfig my power went out and when I went to restart my computer, whenever I tried to startx it gave me some cannot connect to X session, so I left it over night and went to bed, this morning it took a long time to start, longer than usual. and my browser stuff in my fluxbox was reset(book marks and favorites).
View 8 Replies View Relatedjust did a fresh testing install using the debian installer. i have gnome and an nvidia card. i installed the nvidia driver using the debian way outlined on the wiki. then i ran nvidia-xconfig and it generated an XF86Config file instead of an xorg.conf file. everything works, but shouldnt it be an xorg.conf and if so, maybe it isnt reading the XF86Config file at all?

And after that my X is not working. And when i try sudo modprobe nvidia I get this:

I'm building a file server, but before the admins move this to the networking forum' this IS about the kernel.
Anyway, I'm building a file server... a very basic thing. not much to it at all.. which is kinda the root of the problem... this is an old Dell (ugh! I know!) Dimension 8300. it's running a 2.6 GHz Celeron (Northwood die, so single-core), with (at the moment) a mere 256 MB of RAM... so I wanted to build a kernel that really minimizes its presence in my minuscule amount of RAM using this guide, I have gotten so far as the actual Kernel configuration. wherein it says to cd to your kernel's directory and use the 'make xconfig' command... but when I do this, it gives me the following error:

I can't seem to be able to run make xconfig under Gnome. It throws an error:

Everything was running fine, then I installed ardour (doesn't work, but that not what I am here for), I rebooted and now everything is in low res, and looks horrible, I tried uninstalled and re-installing the driver and that did nothing. When I go into the control panel for the video card I get:

Now my problem is everytime I save the configuration for
- the open GL settings
- the anti aliasing settings
- the powermizing settings
with the GUI-programm NVIDIA X Server Settings under GNOME
Every setting is lost completely after a restart of my system and the defaults are reset even if i save the configuration in the menu nvidia-settings configuration of the GUI-programm NVIDIA X Server Settings. Is there a possibility to SAVE the settings? They should stay after a reboot.
I think this is a issue very spread under several Linux distributions. I can't understand the source of the mistake or bug.
I have dual monitors running successfully with my BFG GeForce 8400GS and NVIDIA X server settings. The only problem is every time I restart, the settings go back to default, so I have to setup the dual monitors again.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to run the kernel configurator for my embedded ARM platform (PXA310) but so far I can only get it to run for my build platform, an i386/32 machine. I've tried running "make ARCH=arch/arm/mach-PXA3xx xconfig" in various combinations, but the maker always complains that it can't find the target "arch/arm/mach-PXA3xx". Doesn't matter what order I put the arguments on the command line.
I also have CROSS-COMPILE defined in the environment correctly and can otherwise build for my embedded target. I just can't run the config tool; I need to enable USB On the Go.
I have a Dell E6500 laptop (1280x800 screen), which I frequently dock.The dock as two Dell 1908FP 20" monitors connected by DVI. I can move between the laptop display and the twins by manually changing display configuration in NVIDIA X Server settings, but this is a pain requiring about 15 clicks each time.
I have tried using the "Save to X Configuration File" option in the Nvidia server settings, but this seems to screw everything up. I need to dynamically change between the setups... anyone have advice on getting that done?Can the xorg.conf file be configured to do it?My xorg.conf looks like this:

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using my Ubuntu 10.04 as a server, headless or with HDMI receiver/TV setup. There is a lot's of topics how to make it work headless/VNS. I found the least trouble is to make a fake VGA from old VGA cable and 3 resistors. However, when I start my Ubuntu with Fake VGA it won't switch to HDMI when I turn my Receiver/HDMI on. If I restart X it is fastest way to pick the HDMI Video/7.1 Audio up. I can do it via VNC or ssh and going to do it with 'irexec' so my wife will be able to redetect the HDMI and run XBMC with one button click of the remote.The problem is restarting X kills all my GUI apps (KTorrent, ...). Is there a way to force the video driver to restart or redetect the screens?

What I'd like to happen is for it to automatically start using my monitors if they're detected. OR, make a simple script that will enable the monitors without needing to restart X.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI run Ubuntu 9.04 on with proprietary NVidia driver 180.44.When I change anything in the nvidia-settings, e.g. screen resolution, brightness, second screen etc, everything works fine - except for the fact that I can't play any video files in any player. Sound is there, players don't display any error messages, but the image is black. Flash video within browsers is fine, though.Things go back to normal with the new settings kept after restarting X. However, having to restart X and lose my desktop set up every time when I just want to connect my laptop to my office screen is highly inconvenient.Is this a bug or expected behaviour that I have to live with?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Fedora 14 KDE and NVIDIA proprietary driver for GeForce FX 5200. I'm able to change the resolution to 1920x1080 (Acer H213H 21.5" lcd monitor), but when I restart the box, I lose these settings and I have to fiddle with NVIDIA and KDE monitor settings until I get the settings back.

Is this (in)correct? What else can I try in order to keep my resolution at 1920x1080? When I restart, it reverts to 640x480.
I didn't have this problem before installing NVIDIA driver, however, I had visual anomalies and slowness in video refresh/repaint whenever moving windows. I don't want to go back to that so I'd like to see how to permanently propagate my resolution settings through reboots of this box. I've search multiple forums with no relevant hits as far as I was able to discern.
I have an old video card, Nvidia XFX 7800GT, which is now beginning to fail and I need to upgrade. I am not huge a gamer but I do play/buy games on regular basis. I can't figure out how to install the nvidia drivers for my nvidia 8800 GT video card. I've followed some other posts and all the posts seemed either incomplete, or led me down a path of which eventually broke my installation, that I needed to reinstall the entire ubuntu system.Again, it may not have been broken, i just didnt know how to get back in to the gui version of ubuntu, the instructions took me to the console terminal

When I set up Twin View in the nVidia config tool (as either a regular user or as root), it only lasts until I log out and log back in (i.e. restart x) or until I restart the machine. In either case once I get to the log in splash screen again, it is only operating on one monitor, and when I log in I have to reconfigure in order to get Twin View back. How can I get the configuration to stay?

I just installed opensuse 11.2 on an AMD 64 bit 3800. It has an nVidia GeForce 7600 GS card. I installed the nVidia driver no problem and can access the nVidia config app as a regular user or as root. Both access via KDE run level 5. That is, in a GUI desktop environment. I set up Twin View fine (it is kind of clunky process, but it does recognize my monitor resolutions fine) and click apply and I get the twin view I want. I clicked on save x config but all it does is bring up a file save dialog with a 'browse' button. Isn't this supposed to automatically know where the X config file is and update it? If it isn't, what file am I supposed to look for to save over? I looked in /etc/X11 and only found the following files:
./rstart/config
./xdm/xdm-config
./xdm/SuSEconfig.xdm
./fs/config
./proxymngr/pmconfig
I don't know if you have heard of Nvidia FREE Rendering program, called Nvidia Gelato.
I've logged on thw web, and tried to look it up on the web. I found the webpage, but all the download link's seem to be broken.

Only about 1.5 weeks into Linux guys so bear with me. I'm trying to uninstall the Nouveau driver and install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.14-pkg1.run for my old Nvidia TNT2 card. Following these directions I run into a problem in the first step. When I execute the Ctrl+Alt+F1 command and get:
Ubuntu 10.10 splat-desktop tty1 splat-desktop login: if I enter splat which I believe is my username and the correct p/w I get an incorrect login response.
