How can i hide the bubble with username in the upper bar, right hand? It is linked to the shutdown icon but i want to keep that icon but hide the bubble with the name of the user.
I was searching but i didn't find anything, only how to hide all the mini-applet session (shutdown icon included).

I thought I was removing the chat status piece of the indicator applet (I know what it is now, didn't then), but I accidentally removed the whole thing. Now when I figured out how to put it back on the panel, I can't get it back to where it was (which was to the RIGHT of the system date/time applet). How can I do this as well as move the indicator applet that has the volume control in it?

I am currently in a project to set up an LTSP server with 10 thin clients. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).
Installing server and booting clients are working fine. Now, according to the need, I have to restrict user session numbers and allow resuming previous user session.
I have achieved to do the first one, but still could not able to setup the second one. As per requirement, if some thin can have power failure, the same session should be restored back. I am confused here, if I need to focus on saving xsessions or saving gnome sessions. I am looking for a concrete solution as I am running out of time.
I've got a strange problem: when I run Frozen Bubble from my user account, I get no sound, but the same game has sound with my wife's account and the root account.
EDITED TO ADD: My user account has sound for DVDs through Kaffeine, Mplayer, etc. And the system sounds are working just find.
I goofed and deleted my all the indicators on the right of the top panel on Gnome in 11.04 I sure would like them back especially the sessions menu. I've tried "Add to Panel" but they aren't the same ones that were there before.

I like Ubuntu a lot but have noticed some peculiar behavior sometimes with the Indicator Applet Session becoming mangled and unusable. If I click on it nothing happens. I haven't determined any particular cause yet but it seems to have happened twice after using Google's Chrome browser.

My computer will not suspend or hibernate properly (every time I try to wake it up, the hard drive will work for about 4 minutes and the screen will stay blank so I have to restart) and I would like to remove those items from the menu. I would just like to know if there is a way to remove the hibernate and suspend items in the indicator applet session menu. I've already tried browsing around gconf-editor to no avail. If it is not possible, let me know

View 1 Replies View RelatedI actually got my boss to let me put Ubuntu on a laptop for a client and it works like a champ. I have it all setup but there's one thing I'd like to do on it. I have an admin user (the one I created during the install) and a desktop user (for the person receiving the laptop). I would like to hide my admin user from the login screen, so when it boots up all the user sees is their name. If I need to help them with something/install software I can choose other and login as my admin user.
It appears this was rather easy in 9.10 and previous but I can't figure out how to do it in 10.04. To be clear, I want to edit the user list, not disable it entirely. I've tried changing the user id, I found a post that claimed IDs less than 1000 were not shown on the login screen, this proved un-true in my case.
Does anybody know if it is possible to hide certain databases from the root user in MySQL?
It may sound stupid, since the root is the root and all that, and it may feel strange but it kind of adds a level of abstraction which I want to give the "root user", and I want to avoid going down the route of creating a new mysql instance on the server.
I had wondered if there is some kind of 'hide' parameter for a database or whether it is possible to change the root username to something else (e.g. 'realroot') and then create a new user 'root' with all the same privileges (except those on the hidden databases).
Is it possible for a non-root user to hide themselves from the output of who/w, so that they can be logged in without other users seeing it? I think that the file /var/run/utmp might have something to do with this, but it's not writeable by non-root users (permission 644). I'm fairly certain that this can be done by a non-privileged user (because someone told me that they were able to do so), but I don't know how they did it and can't ask them right now.
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis sounds like an old topic. I have an active user account in my system that I don't want it to be listed in GDM greeter. In the past (prior to Gnome 3), it can be achieved by configuring the "Exclude" option of the "greeter" section in the Custom.conf or by creating the user account with UID smaller than MinimalUID. But it seems the same old trick does not work for me in Gnome 3. I have tried the "Exclude" option with no effect at all. Using the UID approach only solves my problem partially, as it only exclude it in the GDM greeter during "switch user" but it still being shown in the list in the initial greeter after a cold boot.
Anyone know how to do this in Gnome 3?
I was wondering if it was possible to hide the File Systems from a user. So when then browse through folders or choose to save something the default folder is their "home" folder. I am using SAM Linux distribution and don't want my users to be able to screw anything up! I use thunar as my file manager and was just wondering if it is possible?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn recent versions of ubuntu, the behavior of gdm and gnome is changed so that if a gnome user doesn't touch the mouse or keyboard for a while, the session is locked, and they have to type their password in order to get back in. I dislike this behavior, because on some of the machines I use and manage, people will walk away and not come back, and then there is no way to log them out. I can switch and log in as a different user, but the AWOL user's session is sitting there eating up resources until the machine is rebooted. I prefer the old behavior, with no locking. Is there any way to get the old behavior back? I've looked through the gdm.conf docs, but can't seem to find anything relevant. This actually seems more like a gnome issue than a gdm issue. I think what's changed is that gnome now invokes a screensaver after a certain amount of time, and that screensaver locks the session.

The package does not seem to exist in Karmic, however. A search of Ubuntu packages reveals versions for Hardy, Intrepid, Jaunty, and Lucid, but skips Karmic.

My family uses a computer running Ubuntu 10.04. We each have a separate login. This computer connects to the internet via wifi.
A behaviour which I have noticed is as follows - the first user to log in gets the network manager applet icon. So they can control the network connection. Any other user that subsequently logs in does not.
Now this is a real pain in the butt as sometimes our wifi connection drops and I might have left my wife logged in and used the 'switch user' function to get access to my login. The only way I can access the applet is by switching back to her login.
Is there any way to make this appear in everyone's login's at the same time?
I installed KDE 4.3.5 on my existing Gnome desktop and i have two users using the computer. Now from Gnome I am accustomed to switch between session very easy and the sessions continue to run. If I use the Switch option from KDE it just looks my screen and does not switch. Is it possible that I miss some programs? I installed it with Yast and used the group option. I am pretty sure that I missed something during the installation.

Upon reboot of the system I accessed the partition I had just edited and I found that I was unable to login using the login manager, every time I hit login it just returns me to the same screen displaying the message: unable to start session.
