Ubuntu Servers :: Restrict User Session Numbers And Allow Resuming Previous User Session?

Jun 30, 2010

I am currently in a project to set up an LTSP server with 10 thin clients. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).

Installing server and booting clients are working fine. Now, according to the need, I have to restrict user session numbers and allow resuming previous user session.

I have achieved to do the first one, but still could not able to setup the second one. As per requirement, if some thin can have power failure, the same session should be restored back. I am confused here, if I need to focus on saving xsessions or saving gnome sessions. I am looking for a concrete solution as I am running out of time.

Debian :: Creating Live .iso Image (without Remastersys)

Jul 12, 2011

i feel like this is a stupid question as i have seen many different ways to make a debian live cd, but the only way i understand is remastersys.i am trying to make a snapshot of my own debian unstable (sid) to be capable of re-distribution. remastersys will ONLY work on ubuntu, lenny, and squeeze.if anyone knows of any relatively simple tools i could use or could write an easy how too that would be very much appreciated. i am attempting to stray away from ubuntu and ubuntu based distros and use debian instead, although i cant find any distribution based on debian that i really like (maybe linux mint debian edition based on debian testing), but i really want the software right out of unstable (sid) and i would like to be able to make a distribute-able snapshot for myself and others that may be interested. (xfce + compiz + others, hopefully plymouth, out of the box). i have made some very good headway on this, but i dont know how to make a live cd out of an installed system without remastersys.

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Log On To Default User On Persistent 10.10 After Setting Password?

Dec 29, 2010

After setting up a persistent Lubuntu (10.10) on a 4GB SD with Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.1.8 , I started changing the passwd of the original user ubuntu , but after rebooting, I can't log in. So I resorted to hitting Ctrl+the function key that gives you a CLI, and changed the password for "ubuntu" user then tried to log on again. No success. Then I created a new user with a password, and managed to log in with this user, but it is not the same experience, the menus are lacking, and it is not possible to log on to wifi, similar problem to this user

Ubuntu :: Show Password Entry Field For Default User In FIRST Login Screen?

Jun 11, 2010

When I boot Ubuntu 10.04 then at first the login screen appears with the main user

"Peter"
and
"other..."

In 99% of the cases I use "Peter" and have explicitely to click on Peter. Only then the password entry field appears and I can enter it.

This is somehow user unfriendly. Can I define somehow a default user (here: Peter) and show immediately the password entry field (and place the cursor inside)?

Ubuntu :: Permissions In A Live Session On Boot From CD

Jul 19, 2010

Have problem with HD too full so I have booted from a live CD hoping to copy my document and data files onto an external drive.

Have a problem with a couple directories on my HD. They have a X on them and when I try to copy them I get an error message that I do not have permission to read them. Same thing happens when I go to open the directory to see what files are in there.

I can get the permissions changed in live CD session so I can copy them to the external drive.

No luck doing it in a regular boot to my HD as it will not allow me in due to the HD being full. Even in terminal I can't access the directories in question because the seem not to exist but yet when I do a df command they show up.

P.S. This problem occurred after I updated to ver 10.4

Ubuntu :: Burn An ISO To A CD While Logged Into A Live CD Session?

Mar 22, 2011

Is possible to burn an ISO to a CD while logged into a Live CD session? The issue is I'm logged in on an old 7.10 Live CD and would like to burn a 10.10 CD to do a reinstall after my hard drive broke. I realize of course the system runs from the 7.10 CD, but if it's possible to keep the system running from memory while burning or something.

There are no disc burning tools in the Applications menu, but wodim appears to be available at least, so if there's a way I would seem to have a tool to do the actual burning anyway.

Ubuntu :: Change Default KDM Session?

Jun 23, 2010

So, I just installed Kubuntu 10.04, and couldn't let things be, so I installed GNOME, and plan to install a few other desktop environments for fun later. However, when I installed GNOME (apt-get install ubuntu-desktop), I realized that KDM's default session is whatever session you used last time. I'd rather it simply be KDE, since I know I'll be using it most out of any of the others. How can I make the KDM default session be KDE, instead of whatever the previous session was?

Ubuntu :: Is There A Password For Default "ubuntu" User

Jul 13, 2010

And, if so, how do I find out what it is?n trying to fix my SSH issues, I've been switching back and forth between the default user "ubuntu" and another user I created with the same attributes. I can switch from "ubuntu" to the new user just fine. However, I am unable to log back in as "ubuntu", because although there is apparently a password, I have no idea what it might be.he install does not allow you to select a password for the "ubuntu" user, and of course, to change the password, you need to know the old one first.hen I try to log back in as "ubuntu" from another user account, I get the password screen and then the display goes black. I assume that's what you get when you are not logged in at all?n any case, to get back to "ubuntu" again, I have to reboot. This is probably answered already somewhere, but searching didn't find it

Ubuntu Networking :: Lucid Wifi - Persistance Or Carry Over From Live Cd Session?

Feb 19, 2011

Yesterday, I did a clean install of Lucid on a T42 thinkpad, with wireless card as identified by lshw below. I did the installation from within a live CD session, with wifi enabled.

Code:
description: Wireless interface
product: PRO/Wireless LAN 2100 3B Mini PCI Adapter
vendor: Intel Corporation

On reboot into the fresh system and update I had the issues that others have seen with network manager not connecting, repeatedly asking for password and so on. Oddly enough, using a Netgear usb wifi dongle worked perfectly, so I thought there might be a driver issue. Updates did not help. The network manager icon would not appear in the notification area at all when attempting to connect to wifi in a cafe locally. Today, I did a fresh re-install from the same CD with the home wifi switched off and no internet connection on the laptop. No issues. Wifi is working perfectly at present. I had to make the home connection available to all users to stop the keyring password request (I use autologin). I'll be trying to connect at local cafes tomorrow (one has no security, one uses an ascii wep password, and a third has a WPA encryption)

Is it possible that the settings from the live session are carried over in some way and interfering with network manager in some way? (This all started because my minimal install (see signature) reached a state where it would not show the network manager icon when attempting to connect to wifis in cafes and colleges, which I need to do. I decided to reinstall to return to a known state. I may try a minimal installation and manual wifi connection from the command line next...)
