Recently I deleted files from my root/share folder in an attempt to remove a program which had made the system virtually unusable. Upon reboot of the system I accessed the partition I had just edited and I found that I was unable to login using the login manager, every time I hit login it just returns me to the same screen displaying the message: unable to start session.

I have Fedora 12 installed and it was running fine until I attempted to set the path in bashrc and cshrc for jdk. Now I am unable to login using the only user account I created at install. When I enter my password the login screens goes blank then my mouse pointer appears with the circling dashed loading symbol for a few secs and then brings me back to the login screen asking for my password again.

I recently made a computer for someone who decided to get a new one instead.. so i thought i'd make a server out of it lk i had it before. so i deleted their account (while on their account) and made me an account.. but now when i try to login to my account it's.. not there? such as when i type my username and pass it says i entered an invalid user/pass. any idea how i can get my user accounts back or atleast logon to this system? i know the root password if there's any way i can login under the root account.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am currently in a project to set up an LTSP server with 10 thin clients. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 (Karmic).
Installing server and booting clients are working fine. Now, according to the need, I have to restrict user session numbers and allow resuming previous user session.
I have achieved to do the first one, but still could not able to setup the second one. As per requirement, if some thin can have power failure, the same session should be restored back. I am confused here, if I need to focus on saving xsessions or saving gnome sessions. I am looking for a concrete solution as I am running out of time.
I recently installed debian 8 stretch with xfce. Since the first time I boot, I have problem starting my X session: from lightdm I always attemped 2 or 3 times before it login (it returned me on lightdm prompt after a short splash screen).
Now it stopped working: the only way I can start xsession is running startx as root. When I try as user it starts the "splash" and return me to the tty with this error message:

I try to reconfigure Xorg but the Xorg -configure command result in another segmentation fault.
I think that the problem could be related with old configuration (when I install this version of debian I maintain the /home partition and my previous OS was debian 7 with xfce).
I'v debian with xfce, how can I automatically insert my user at login screen?? ...and what's the name of the program that start the login screen and maybe change it??

I'm going to use this script to help identify who the user on a computer and while I know that's possible that a sometime-user may have a larger account than the normal-user on any given computer, the results of a script should be sufficient in most cases for my needs.I'm not sure the best way to around this. I recently configured my client to log on using my (open)ldap account. Since then I could not get thunderbird started from my ldap account. But if I su to one of the local accounts, it opens.
My client is Fedora14.
When opensuse boots up and shows the login screen. The login screen shows all configured user accounts to select from.
How would I hide these accounts for opensuse 11.3 with KDE and opensuse 11.4 with LXDE.

That makes it so that prey (see preyproject.com) cannot send notices until someone has logged onto Ubuntu.what I would like to do (but I have no clue how) is to set up a user account that automatically, in the background, logs on at start up. Then this little user login would establish any Internet connection that is possible (wifi or lan) and start the program 'prey'. This should all be totally transparent to the user that would just see the regular log in screen.

I thought that I may have fat fingered the password when I created it so I ran the installer again since it takes very little time to do so. When creating the new root account password, I was very careful to type it correctly. After the install was complete, I am still unable to use the root account. I'm unable to SU from my normal user account, too. I just receive the Login incorrect error. Is there something with using root accounts with Ubuntu server that I'm missing?

However, I am unable to ftp a user account on a EC2 instance of fc12.I do not know what commands were given to fc12 to create an AMI that uses a private key instead of a password.As root administrator I like it. However, I am trying to set up users in such a way that Windows users using "My Network Places" can access my EC2 instance of fc12. I have created accounts for my users and set a password for each of them (useradd). The problem is that I am unable to ftp the fc12 server with the user name and password. The error message the client gets when it tries to do so says there is no supported authentication method available. I presume I must somehow change server security or something to allow access to users with passwords but I do not know how to do this.

So, I just installed a VM with OpenSuse 11.2 and joined it to my AD W2k3 domain. After correcting the clock problems, everything is running fine except a strange feature that I was not able to solve.After a reboot, I'm not able to login with a domain account. I enter the username/password, choose the domain then it the input fields become grey for 1-2 seconds then the password field is reset and nothing happens.The most strange part comes when you logon with the local root account. You login as root, then logoff and login with any domain account : works like a charm..

View 13 Replies View RelatedI made a Desktop User account. When I went on that account, it allowed me to execute sudo as if I was an administrator. I don't know what might be causing this. I do have ufw set up and blocking incoming connections. Do you guys know what might be at the root of this?Also, when I used sudo from the user account (which I shouldn't have been able to do), I provided the password for my admin account.

I'm trying to get rid of gnome as much as possible since I consider it bloated. I have everything according to my taste but when I boot I need to start x by hand (through xinit) and I would like it to start automatically.
So I created a script in /etc/init.d/ to do that. If I just execute xinit on the script it runs X as root (we all know that's highly not recommended), so I tried su - username -c "xinit" to no avail. However if I start another program, say rtorrent, like that (replacing xinit with rtorrent) it works perfectly.
What do I need to do start X under a username on login? I don't want a login manager just to do something which I am so close to do.
i am having problems with privileges i have created a new user with my name, but i cant get root privileges on it. i need the same privileges as the root profile.

I installed Centos 5.5 on a home PC to be used remotely.
All server daemons work fine but only start if the user is logged in.
How do I set the SSH server to start whenever the PC is turned on, rather than when the user is logged in? I read the chkconfig man page online but couldn't find anything.
Plus I put a script in my startup services to be run whenever the computer boots (I'm guessing when the users logs in). How do I go about setting that to run too whenever the system boots instead?
