If you need to to exclude one or mode user from your gdm login window you must edit "/etc/gdm/gdm.schemas" and add the user you want exclude from the <key> "greeter/Exclude" (near the other user in <default></default>)

In fedora 14, the user order on GNOME login screen is completely different from that in fedora 13. Is there any way to order the users by date of creation ASC, not by name ASC?
Also, it is completely random. This time when I started my computer, my account was listed first. When I started this thread, it was listed last. What's happening?
having a hard time mapping a drive from a windows xp PC to a Linux Share. I have edited the SMB.conf file to include the share I want to connect to. when I try try map a drive to the Linux share using NET USE M: \192.168.15.5pairing I get the following error:"system error 1326 has occurred.Logon filaure: unknown user name or bad password."I use a username and password that is valid on the Linux server and has access to the Share.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis sounds like an old topic. I have an active user account in my system that I don't want it to be listed in GDM greeter. In the past (prior to Gnome 3), it can be achieved by configuring the "Exclude" option of the "greeter" section in the Custom.conf or by creating the user account with UID smaller than MinimalUID. But it seems the same old trick does not work for me in Gnome 3. I have tried the "Exclude" option with no effect at all. Using the UID approach only solves my problem partially, as it only exclude it in the GDM greeter during "switch user" but it still being shown in the list in the initial greeter after a cold boot.
Anyone know how to do this in Gnome 3?
I use the Scale Windows (aka Window Picker) of Compiz. I'm not entirely happy about the behaviour and i'm not sure if / how i can customise it.
What i want is:that minimized windows also are represented among scaled / exposed windows for me to pick from.
that my panel and dock are still clickable when all my windows are scaled / exposed.
Is there any way i can include / exclude these windows from that effect?
I've installed ubuntu 10.4 and i've got a great wallpaper for a the background durring logon but the logon box (enter username/password) is covering up the focal point of the background.Is there a tool or something that lets me "easily" move the logon window? If not, is there a way to manualy edit a config file or something to move it to... the top left for example ( 0,0 ) or (100,100)?

Running 10.04 64-bit. After logging on, the title bars around all the windows are missing. Adding "metacity --replace" as a startup command resolves the problem, but something's obviously wrong.
Doesn't occur on my other computer, so probably hardware related.

App is working fine but I need little modification.
1. My app name is test.app. Inside I have Contents/MacOS/test(executable)
2. I rename test(executable) as launch.
3. I create a simple bash script with name test(set executable permission) in Contents/MacOS directory inside app.
4. This script set same environment vars and finally execute launch executable.
5. This works but problem is that a terminal window comes up when launching app.
Is it possible to run the script(test) in such a way that it should not show terminal window?
I think someone hacked my server and I'm wondering if it's possible to view the possible the past user logons?

how can i restrict a single particular user from logging into the server not more than 5 times?
The conditions may be:
1) wrong password
2) can login only 5 times on one day etc.
I'm running Suse 11.1. MySQL is installed. I downloaded and installed the software for MySQLAdmin and MySQLBrowser, this was one software package so both got installed at the same time. My question is this; When I log into MySQL to use the Admin Tools it doesn't like my root password. So I log in as 'localhost' with the id of 'root' and no password and I get right into the main Admin menu. Why doesn't it accept the root password and how can I change the root login to need to have a password. Will just changing the password in MySQL Admin do the trick?

As a work-around I login to the first terminal as root to restart the machine and usually my normal user account appears back on the list. This morning the reboot work-around didn't work any more..

Is it possible for a non-root user to hide themselves from the output of who/w, so that they can be logged in without other users seeing it? I think that the file /var/run/utmp might have something to do with this, but it's not writeable by non-root users (permission 644). I'm fairly certain that this can be done by a non-privileged user (because someone told me that they were able to do so), but I don't know how they did it and can't ask them right now.

We have a requirement to provide a normal (non-root) user logging onto our system, with information regarding the number of failed logon attempts made on their account before the current successful logon (similar to the functionality provided by HP Protect Tools on Windows). My first idea was to add 'faillog -u $USER' to the bashrc, however by the time the bashrc is run - the user has been successfully authenticated and the faillog has been reset back to zero.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI actually got my boss to let me put Ubuntu on a laptop for a client and it works like a champ. I have it all setup but there's one thing I'd like to do on it. I have an admin user (the one I created during the install) and a desktop user (for the person receiving the laptop). I would like to hide my admin user from the login screen, so when it boots up all the user sees is their name. If I need to help them with something/install software I can choose other and login as my admin user.
It appears this was rather easy in 9.10 and previous but I can't figure out how to do it in 10.04. To be clear, I want to edit the user list, not disable it entirely. I've tried changing the user id, I found a post that claimed IDs less than 1000 were not shown on the login screen, this proved un-true in my case.
Does anybody know if it is possible to hide certain databases from the root user in MySQL?
It may sound stupid, since the root is the root and all that, and it may feel strange but it kind of adds a level of abstraction which I want to give the "root user", and I want to avoid going down the route of creating a new mysql instance on the server.
I had wondered if there is some kind of 'hide' parameter for a database or whether it is possible to change the root username to something else (e.g. 'realroot') and then create a new user 'root' with all the same privileges (except those on the hidden databases).
