Fedora :: Configure GDM To Hide Individual User ?
Jul 1, 2011
This sounds like an old topic. I have an active user account in my system that I don't want it to be listed in GDM greeter. In the past (prior to Gnome 3), it can be achieved by configuring the "Exclude" option of the "greeter" section in the Custom.conf or by creating the user account with UID smaller than MinimalUID. But it seems the same old trick does not work for me in Gnome 3. I have tried the "Exclude" option with no effect at all. Using the UID approach only solves my problem partially, as it only exclude it in the GDM greeter during "switch user" but it still being shown in the list in the initial greeter after a cold boot.
Anyone know how to do this in Gnome 3?

I have a RAID 1 that is mounted and working. But for some reason I can also see the individual drives under gnome Devices on gnome-shell. Is there a way to hide them from gnome or linux in general. (So only the raid 1 can be seen)

If you need to to exclude one or mode user from your gdm login window you must edit "/etc/gdm/gdm.schemas" and add the user you want exclude from the <key> "greeter/Exclude" (near the other user in <default></default>)
When Fedora could have a gdm config again?

I all ready have a Debian spam filter setup using Postgrey, Postfix, Amavis-new, spamassassin, and ClamAV this box is a relay spam filter server to our SBS Exchange Box. Currently all Virus laden email is disposed of, and all spam that is not thrown out gets sent to a spam filter account on the exchange server that I check periodically. This is inefficient and I'd rather not do this, additionally I'd like users to have control over their own white lists and so forth.
I am willing to start from scratch on this as the spam filter is running in a VM environment I can plug a new one in and be running in minutes. The issue I am having is that I cannot find any information on how to do this. Plenty, including HOWTOs, on how to do this with local users on the spam box and also have it relay to another server, but not how to make quarantine folders for relay recipients that are access

Is it possible for a non-root user to hide themselves from the output of who/w, so that they can be logged in without other users seeing it? I think that the file /var/run/utmp might have something to do with this, but it's not writeable by non-root users (permission 644). I'm fairly certain that this can be done by a non-privileged user (because someone told me that they were able to do so), but I don't know how they did it and can't ask them right now.

I was wondering if it was possible to hide the File Systems from a user. So when then browse through folders or choose to save something the default folder is their "home" folder. I am using SAM Linux distribution and don't want my users to be able to screw anything up! I use thunar as my file manager and was just wondering if it is possible?

I actually got my boss to let me put Ubuntu on a laptop for a client and it works like a champ. I have it all setup but there's one thing I'd like to do on it. I have an admin user (the one I created during the install) and a desktop user (for the person receiving the laptop). I would like to hide my admin user from the login screen, so when it boots up all the user sees is their name. If I need to help them with something/install software I can choose other and login as my admin user.
It appears this was rather easy in 9.10 and previous but I can't figure out how to do it in 10.04. To be clear, I want to edit the user list, not disable it entirely. I've tried changing the user id, I found a post that claimed IDs less than 1000 were not shown on the login screen, this proved un-true in my case.

Does anybody know if it is possible to hide certain databases from the root user in MySQL?
It may sound stupid, since the root is the root and all that, and it may feel strange but it kind of adds a level of abstraction which I want to give the "root user", and I want to avoid going down the route of creating a new mysql instance on the server.
I had wondered if there is some kind of 'hide' parameter for a database or whether it is possible to change the root username to something else (e.g. 'realroot') and then create a new user 'root' with all the same privileges (except those on the hidden databases).

Just installed Fedora 12. After installing a new distro, I usually remove the individual programs that I have no use for or interest in. In Fedora, I've noticed that, for KDE at least, I can't remove just one program I have to remove the whole "group" of programs. For example, I might want only one game on my system and remove the rest but KPackageKit only allows to me to remove KDE Games (all of them) instead of just the programs I have no interest in. This is not the same as other distros I have tried. Is there a way around this?

I currently have both drivers compiled and installed as modules:
Code:

igb_pfring 114831 0
igb 82481 0

I use 4 virtual desktops and under Fedora 8 and KDE was able for each to have a unique wallpaper. Since installing Fedora 12 and KDE I can't seem to find a way to get that feature. I can name each virtual desktop but not set individual wallpaper. I've searched the documents for both KDE and Fedora, they say how to set the wallpaper but not for individual desktops.

Today I found something really interesting (at least to me) on one of our test servers:
I can change into an existing directory from my actual working directory using a relative path, but that very same directory is not listed when using ls -a.
Here is the shell session (as root):
$ pwd
/you/are/here
$ ls -a
. .. <-- Note: "somedir" is not shown to root
$ echo $CDPATH
[Code]....
I had checked the automount thing mentioned by Gilles, but as I had changed to somewhere and issued a mount|grep somewhere there were no output.
Here is the lsattr and strace output as suggested: [URL]

I'd like to try to sell my old laptop. Although it's unlikely that somebody would like to buy and even more unlikely that this person would like to have Xubuntu on it I still want to do a clean install. The only question is how should I configure the user name. I mean if a buyer would like to keep Xubuntu but change the name how it is done? What do you have when you for example buying a Dell laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed?

My startup script for Radius now works so it starts at boot time, the script is in /etc/init.d and looks like this
#!/bin/sh
/usr/local/sbin/radiusd -d /usr/local/var/log/radius/radacct/ -d /usr/local/etc/raddb/
After rebooting radius starts up automatically which is what I want.
However for security I dont want this to run under root, but I want to it run under a user and group called support
I have edited the radius.conf file and added
# for some finer-grained access controls.
#
user = support
group = support

1st, I got the OS install. I just want to hide some program launcher from menu bar. In the old Gnome, it work this way, I put the mouse on the menu bar, and then right click, choose preference then I can hide everything I wanna hide. But I can not do that on F12 any more, I tired to refer to Gnome instruction manual on Gnome web site. It seems like they did not change anything on Gnome 2.28. Since the instruction remain the same.
2nd I also want to ask, how do I change the default interface language setting in F12? In previous version I just need to do that in SYSTEM-->Preference. But I can not see the option any more either.
3rd I can not install the NVIDIA proprietary driver even though I got GCC and kernel development header in place. The install log said:" The binary file is not for the kernel" Well, I just use the regular i686 kerenl as usual. It does not make sense it will not work.
I got the driver running by using the rpmfusion driver, not the one from Nvida
By the way, The nouveau driver in F12 works far from OK on my GO 7300. It just like a slave driver that whip the GPU at full out all the time, let alone it does not have 3D capability.
The live cd does not include GCC and kernel development header. That made me feel like walking on the moon but forgot to put the gravity suite on.

Are there any tools (gui?) that make the xkb configuration easier? I know xev, but that sadly only displays the keycode and the character, but not the shortcuts like <LSGT> that xkb is using internally. I am stuck with the old problem of improperly mapped keys on my German Apple Aluminium Keyboard. My old workarounds that worked with Hardy and Karmic (modified "de" files in /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols) do not work anymore in Lucid.
