I`m trying to find minimalistic distributive for vmware player with switch user option. With gdmflexiserver or something like this.Or perhaps there is a way how to do this in puppylinux or DSL.

View 12 Replies View RelatedAnyone successfully using VNC client on a Mac to control a Debian server?I have the vncserver setup on the Debian machine properly. But I'm having problems connecting to it from both a PowerMac running Tiger and a MacBookPro running leopard.I can connect no problem from a machine running Slack12.2, have not setup port forwarding on my router to connect remotely yet.My Debian machine is running the latest stable release of squeeze with KDE4.I originally tried this with RealVNC Enterprise for OSX but I'm not gonna buy it so I need another alternative after the 30 day trial ends as they have no free version for OSX.
The situation is that I do freelance graphic design on the PowerMac with Cinema4D and Photoshop so I spend most of my time on that machine which is located in my home studio in my attic. Aside from the MacBook and a Dell desktop(family machine)all my other machines and network hardware are in the basement. So to go from the attic to the basement everytime I need to do something on another machine is not practical, and the only other machine I need to access on a regular basis is the Debian box in the basement, this makes the most sense.
I also have a 14 year old living in the house and he's fascinated by all this and will meddle in anything he gets the chance to so all the Linux machines and network hardware need to be behind lock and key.
I'm wondering if there is a mini pc than I can use to install my compiled linux.For watching video, listening radio from internet..As small as possible, with HDMI, audio output, no more than 3 PCI ports, many USB ports and without the old PS/2 ports.

A user tried to check what went wrong with computer and tried to login from terminal next morning. As the computer was unresponsive, he somehow decided to boot it by turning the power off. To make the story short, the server rebooted; however, he can't login to his account. Actually, the server could not start some processes; but was able to ask user to enter his account username. Even though, he enters the correct username and password, server does not accept the request. I also could not login as root.
I just checked the server logs by booting it in single user mode. Here are some interesting lines:
Before the reboot:
irqbalance : can't balance irqs on a uniprocessor system: failed
After the reboot:
irqbalance : can't balance irqs on a uniprocessor system: failed
fsck:
fsck /: (this is repeated 900+ times)
[code]....
I readily admit I know next to nothing about Linux - so I am pleading mercy here.
My HP Mini 1000 had to be factory reset and that means no more Windows XP on the machine until I can figure out how to install it via USB flash. The machine comes with, from what I can figure out, a modified version of ubuntu.
What I wanted to do was to change away from this iphone-like default GUI but I cannot find any menu options to change the theme (System > Preferences > Theme) There is nothing like that anywhere on the computer as far as I can tell. Nothing. The OS help file even says to go to these menus, but they do not exist.
Does anyone have any knowledge that may be helpful here? Am I going to have to install a completely fresh OS? Surely there is a way to switch themes...
A few months ago, I got one of these and it is great for travel. I had to buy Norton for it and now the trial MS Office has expired which burns me. MS Windoze 7 Light is an adventure plus all the other bundled useless (to me) HP stuff.I use SUSE Linux 11.2 on my main mail/internet desktop and I like it a lot so I have been thinking about swapping the hard drive out of the HP Mini and loading 11.2.
Has anybody done this? I've searched but haven't turned up any threads about this. I'm a newbie so maybe I need to be pointed?Maybe there is a more suitable Linux distribution but I only know SUSE and am ok with it.My HP is a Mini 210-1000 if that is relevant.
i just installed ubuntu last night, with dual boot towards xp and ubuntu 9.1 on my pc. But was wondering if there is a way to switch bettween the two withOUT rebooting.

I have an HP mini 110 with Fedora 11 install. I installed the broadcom-wl and wl-kmod from yum but still no wireless. First I can't get the broadcom card to turn on using the slide switch on the front of the computer. The device is inactive in the network configuration-devices window. The card is not in the network configuration hardware window. When I try to add it manually, there is no entry for the card in the drop down list. I am new to Fedora but have used linux for years. Unfortunately this is my first attempt at wireless networking.
The posts and google stuff doesn't say much more than "yum install broadcom-wl" Can anyone point me into the right direction? I have a feeling I am missing something very simple, because this computer dual boots Linux Mint and wireless works flawlessly.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAll servers mentioned below run OpenSuSE, either 10 or 11.I am currently working on a few scripts that are meant to be used as part of a continuous integration setup. I am trying to keep these scripts reasonably secure, and so I have made sure that all the servers run these scripts only as a specific user (user1) that has permissions to basically nothing else. The problem I am currently running into is that I need to start and stop tomcat as user1 but this user doesn't have permissions to the tomcat rectory (only tomcat has execute permissions). I have a temporary workaround in place while I work on the scripts (I have an SSH key in place that allows me to SSH from user1o tomcat without a password and execute my commands that way) but it is not very secure. I have tried adding the following line to /etc/sudoers:

Always "incorrect password".Same happen if I try to do "su <some-other-user>"This happen ONLY in shell windowws. If I try, for example, to run some administration service, like system-config-service, the root password is accepted in the prompting window.

i do the following :
1. run ssh-keygen in .ssh directory of the user.
2. copy the id_rsa.pub as the authorized-keys in the root's .ssh directory
3 chmod 600 to the authorized_keys
4.restart the machine
5. login from the user and ssh SER ( SER is the entry in the /etc/hosts with the ip address of the machine)
6 It still prompt for the password
How can i ssh from the user to the machine without password.
Seemingly simple question, which yields slightly undesired results. Execute putty to start a script on a remote linux server which requires user input The remote script does a read -p "Please enter name" NAME I can use plink to execute a script over SSH, the following attempts and problems are shown below :-
Note the -load ns is to load a session that doesnt exist, ie ensure no defaults are used
1) plink.exe -load ns <ip_addr> -l <user> -pw <password> <script path/name> Problem) Doesn't allow/show user input, ie its non-interactive.
2) Add -t to allocate a pty :- plink.exe -t -load nc <ip_addr> -l <user> -pw <password> <script path/name> Problem) Ok, so now the user input can be seen, but I get Ctrl+H (^H) when backspace is pressed, ok if the user doesnt make a mistake!
3) Use putty instead with a saved session putty.exe -load "SavedSession" Problem) (a) Get a new window opened, not a biggy, but not as nice. (b) saved session cannot be easily moved. (c) Get password prompt, cannot provide password like with plink, I know I know, use keys, but this is a closed, private network, and its easier not to bother with keys!
So ideally, I would like the SSH to execute in-line, that is from within the batch file/command line shell I am in, not prompt for username/password, run the linux script and allow prompts and delete/backspace to work.
I'm wondering if there's a way so that several people can log onto my computer at the same time. When they connect it goes to the login screen and they choose their account and log in. Everybody has a different account and sees a different desktop. Is that possible?

It has all my MP3s, etc. I would love to be able to control the sound output of that machine from multiple computers. Subsonic ([URL]... comes close -- it has the base functionality that I need (web control of server sound) However, I'm looking for something that handles the multi-user part better. Specifically, would like my users (children, wife) to have their own play lists and ratings. Would love if the tool could select from all of our favorites when I wanted to play music with dinner (including vetoes for the stuff some of ushate). And it doesn't seem like Subsonic allows rating at the song level.

I have Lucid setup for multi user. Whenever 2 users are logged in and one logs off, it freezes on a black screen. It looks like it logs off OK and is on its way to the main login screen but never gets there. I found some older posts describing this problem but no solution. I tried to post to that thread but got a message saying I was not permitted. I am new to Linux and am struggling to figure out how to problem solve issues in Ubuntu.

My family uses a computer running Ubuntu 10.04. We each have a separate login. This computer connects to the internet via wifi.
A behaviour which I have noticed is as follows - the first user to log in gets the network manager applet icon. So they can control the network connection. Any other user that subsequently logs in does not.
Now this is a real pain in the butt as sometimes our wifi connection drops and I might have left my wife logged in and used the 'switch user' function to get access to my login. The only way I can access the applet is by switching back to her login.
Is there any way to make this appear in everyone's login's at the same time?
