When opensuse boots up and shows the login screen. The login screen shows all configured user accounts to select from.
How would I hide these accounts for opensuse 11.3 with KDE and opensuse 11.4 with LXDE.
I actually got my boss to let me put Ubuntu on a laptop for a client and it works like a champ. I have it all setup but there's one thing I'd like to do on it. I have an admin user (the one I created during the install) and a desktop user (for the person receiving the laptop). I would like to hide my admin user from the login screen, so when it boots up all the user sees is their name. If I need to help them with something/install software I can choose other and login as my admin user.
It appears this was rather easy in 9.10 and previous but I can't figure out how to do it in 10.04. To be clear, I want to edit the user list, not disable it entirely. I've tried changing the user id, I found a post that claimed IDs less than 1000 were not shown on the login screen, this proved un-true in my case.
i am having problems with privileges i have created a new user with my name, but i cant get root privileges on it. i need the same privileges as the root profile.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI can't log into my normal user account anymore, though I can log in with root without any problem. When I enter my normal user name and password, the screen blinks, a black page appears and after a couple of seconds I get the login screen again. I deleted /tmp files but no changes. I tried to login using command mode. So I hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log into root in command mode, then ran init3, then switched user to my normal user and ran startx. It worked and I logged into my normal account, but I can not do this process every time. So, what is the problem? How can I solve this problem? I used to work with my normal user flawlessly. I installed a bunch of software and also copied some folders to my home directory, but I don't know whether these activities caused the problem or not. I'm using KDE4 under openSUSE 11.2.

I had disabled user login before this. There is only 1 group when I checked in YaST which is 'users' and its group member is 'games'.
Why can't I login to home account?
Yast->Users and Group Administration->set filter: system users.I get a very long list, including an account called "nobody".

So, I just installed a VM with OpenSuse 11.2 and joined it to my AD W2k3 domain. After correcting the clock problems, everything is running fine except a strange feature that I was not able to solve.After a reboot, I'm not able to login with a domain account. I enter the username/password, choose the domain then it the input fields become grey for 1-2 seconds then the password field is reset and nothing happens.The most strange part comes when you logon with the local root account. You login as root, then logoff and login with any domain account : works like a charm..

One user account completely ignores all keyboard input. No other account demonstrates this bizarre behavior. The faulty account has had occasional keyboard difficulty but it has always been related to the Virtual Machines (VirtualBox); the hosting account always functioned correctly.
Then the ban on keyboard input. Poof! "Keyboard? What keyboard? I don't see no stinking keyboard!"
It is not the physical keyboard. Three different hardware exhibit the same fault. It is not the motherboard; two mb's show the same fault. It is only that one account. And I even took the Windows route of re-installing the OS (what a waste of time that was).
If something changed, I am not aware of it (although something must have).
My install of 11.4 has been running perfectly for for several weeks now. But- (always a but) today it started acting up. I cannot log in to any user account including Root after logging out. After a cold boot I can log in again anywhere but after logging out I have to reboot again then I can get back in to any account once. After logging out any attempted log in causes the splash screen to blank for a few seconds and then it comes back with the previous successful user name log in but typing in the password blanks the screen a few seconds again. Clicking on a user account also blanks the screen a few seconds and then it again comes back with the previous log in users name.

That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:
/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?
Is there any way to hide my username in login screen (GDM)? I ask this because in Ubuntu I have seen that you need manually enter your username.

I have Fedora 12 installed and it was running fine until I attempted to set the path in bashrc and cshrc for jdk. Now I am unable to login using the only user account I created at install. I'm going to use this script to help identify who the user on a computer and while I know that's possible that a sometime-user may have a larger account than the normal-user on any given computer, the results of a script should be sufficient in most cases for my needs.I'm not sure the best way to around this. My OpenSUSE 11.2 is working fine as samba server, no problems, but I have a problem with KDM.My default init runlevel is set to 5 and every time I try to login at KDM (KDE4), the monitor goes black and returns to the login screen.If I hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 to go to console and start /usr/sbin/console-kit-daemon manually, press Ctrl+Alt+F7 to return to KDM login, everything is fine.What do I have to do to fix this issue?

i am having a boot problem with opensuse.i installed a theme named suse-elegant under personal settings(configure desktop)-system administration-login screen.
i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot
note:the login theme also not working.
after the boot i restored defaults in login screen themes.it is also not working.
i don't know which cause this problem(vboxusers or login theme).i am also seeing a root user has been added in my login area.i tried opensuse failsafe also.
