Ubuntu :: Getting "disk Not Large Enough" Error Messages

Seems many of the Ubuntu iso's are 703mb or 705mb. How are you supposed to burn these things. Keep getting "disk not large enough" error messages with Nero and PowerISO.

Ubuntu :: Disk Failure Or Virus - Unable To Boot Up - Lot Of Error Messages Displayed

Aug 30, 2010

Last night when I turned on my lap top (5 year old Acer TravelMate 4650), it was not able to boot up (10.04 LTS). No system files could be read and a lot of error messages was displayed. In fact, it has done a few checks for disk error lately during boot up, but no further warnings given. I gave up recovering, and simply re-installed Ubntu 10.04. I was wondering if this could be related to a virus attack?

OpenSUSE Network :: Sendmail - Large Messages Only Queueing?

Jun 24, 2010

I've got a strange sendmail problem I've never come across before...Messages less that 2500 lines (approx 169kb) are sent correctly - anything else goes straight into the queue and is never delivered. The server sits in a intranet, is not connected to the outside world, and forwards its mail to a smart host. All configuration has been done through yast, so there are no unusual settings. I've run sendmail on SuSE from version 6 upwards, and this is the first time I've come across this - it's driving me potty

Ubuntu :: Copying Large File Blocks Externally Causes Disk Full

Oct 15, 2010

This has happened several times now, with 9.10 and 10.04. I back up my photos periodically to external drives, using Nautilus. At the next attempted login Gnome won't start and sometimes gives power manager incorrect installation error.

First time this happened I was stumped and eventually did a clean install. Second time, I found advice elsewhere in this forum to solve this by emptying root trash, which did the trick. This time, however, root trash has nothing in it and 2 users trash were insignificant (I emptied them all anyway with rm -r). Tried looking for enormous directories but couldn't find a smoking gun. I would rather not end up doing another clean install - a painful and extreme solution. I'm continuing to look for solutions to the immediate problem, but my question really is, what causes this and how do I prevent it in the future? I've run Computer Janitor regularly and ran apt-get clean but no help. Should I do all my large scale copying from terminal? I'm not a total noob, but close.

Debian :: Manually Partitioning And Formatting Large Hard Disk

Jan 5, 2016

What is the recommended method these days for command line partitioning and formatting for the Terabyte size hard disk.?

It was easy to keep up when your working or have access to hardware for re-purposing, but that has all dried up and my knowledge has been left behind. The problem(s) are with new, recent hardware

Following a crash from a now detectable faulty stick of RAMM, I've lost one of my data hard disks and my fiddling with replacement seems to leave various errors/warnings mainly about GPT not supported and this message is still present despite trying fdisk, cfdisk, gpart, gparted, and(?).

System is an ASUS mobo using SATA drives (root 500Gb: MBR+3 partitions;/, swap, /home), and two 2.4TB with single partitions.

Debian Configuration :: Jessie LVM - Full Disk / Large Logs And GParted

Sep 23, 2015

So, my issues since upgrading to Jessie seem to compound. When I fix one issue, two more arise. Right now, I have a full system disk. How it got so full. So I started poking around. I ran

Code: Select all find / -type f -size +50M -exec ls -lh {} ; | awk '{ print $NF ": " $5 }'

Found a few files I could delete, and did, but I also found Code: Select all/var/log/syslog.1: 33G
/var/log/messages: 33G
/var/log/user.log: 33G

What I find strange is that they're all exactly 33G each. So that accounts for the missing 99GB I deleted them, however only recovered 27Gb. Whats weird is when I type df -h I get

Code: Select allFilesystem      Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/dm-0       106G   74G   27G  74% /
udev             10M     0   10M   0% /dev
tmpfs           3.2G  9.7M  3.2G   1% /run
tmpfs           7.9G     0  7.9G   0% /dev/shm
tmpfs           5.0M  4.0K  5.0M   1% /run/lock
tmpfs           7.9G     0  7.9G   0% /sys/fs/cgroup
/dev/sda1       228M   27M  189M  13% /boot
/dev/sdb1       1.9T   62G  1.8T   4% /media/ntfs
tmpfs           1.6G     0  1.6G   0% /run/user/0

What are the tmpfs's and how can I reclaim that space, and what is /dev/dm-0 and why is that taking up so much space?

I have 2 LVGs vgdisplay -v

Code: Select allroot@SETV-007-WOWZA:~# vgdisplay -v
DEGRADED MODE. Incomplete RAID LVs will be processed.
    Finding all volume groups
    Finding volume group "WOWZASERVER"

[Code] ....

After deleting the log files, I was able to regain access to my GDM session. But I still cant find out what /dev/dm-0 is, and where all the 75 GB is being taken up.

I just noticed, however, even though I can access the drive A-OK via browser, terminal, and web services (Our wowza) when I enter gParted I get this error for sda, my primary OS drive!

Code: Select all  Libparted Bug Found!

Error informing the kernel about modifications to partition /dev/sda2 -- Invalid argument. This means Linux won't know about any changes you made to /dev/sda2 until you reboot -- so you shouldn't mount it or use it in any way before rebooting

Now that I'm in gParted I see 3 partitions: [URL] ....

It reports now, that I have used ALL of my disk space.

Post Log delete, and fresh reboot, this is what Code: Select alldf -h outputs

Code:
Select all Filesystem      Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/dm-0       106G  8.7G   92G   9% /
udev             10M     0   10M   0% /dev
tmpfs           3.2G  9.8M  3.2G   1% /run
tmpfs           7.9G   80K  7.9G   1% /dev/shm
tmpfs           5.0M  4.0K  5.0M   1% /run/lock

[Code] ....

What the heck is going on?

Server :: NFS Large File Copies Fail - Error Writing To File: Input/output Error?

Jun 27, 2009

I recently upgraded my file/media server to Fedora 11. After doing so, I can no longer copy large files to the server. The files begin to transfer, but typically after about 1gb of the file has transferred, the transfer stalls and ultimately fails with the message:

"Error writing to file: Input/output error"

I've run out of ideas as to what could cause this problem. I have tried the following:

1. Different NFS versions: NFS3 and NFS4
2. Tried copying the files to different physical drives on the server.
3. Tried copying the files from different physical drives on the client.
4. Tried different rsize and wsize block sizes when mounting the NFS share
5. Tried copying the files via a different protocol. SSH in this case. The file transfers are always successful when I use SSH.

Regardless of what I do, the result is the same. The file transfers always fail after approximately 1gb.

Some other notes.

1. Both the client and the server are running Fedora 11 kernel 2.6.29.5-191.fc11.x86_64

I am out of ideas. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 - Non-system Disk Or Disk Error With Manual Partitions

Apr 9, 2010

This is the third 9.10 install to do this on two different laptops, so wondering what's up...

In both cases, the goal was to leave a large chunk of unpartitioned disk after the Ubuntu partitions, for a second OS install or a filesystem Ubuntu cannot create like NTFS.

When I install with manual partitions, the system can't boot and asks for me to insert a system disk and press any key. When I reinstall telling Ubuntu to "use the entire disk" it then works.

First laptop, first try:

Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.

Fails to boot, "insert system disk".

First laptop, second try without the /boot partition:

Remainder of the 500GB disk is free space.

Fails to boot, "insert system disk".

"use entire disk" works perfectly.

Second laptop, first try:

Same thing, non-system disk or disk error, insert system disk.

Second try "use entire disk" is currently in progress but I expect the same to happen.

Server :: Large File Size Cause RPC Authentication Error?

Oct 6, 2009

I think I am having a problem due to an NFS server file size limit. Is it possible I am missing a parameter on the RHEL NFS setup to handle large files? I am running an NFS server on a RHEL 5.1 machine and the HP-UX 11.0 machine does an NFS mount to that file system. The HP-UX executes a program that resides on the HP-UX machine to process a large 35 GB data file that resides on the NFS server machine. The program on the HP-UX can only read/process the first portion of the file until an "RPC: Authentication error" is returned multiple times until the program prematurely decides that it has reached the end of file.

I tried recompiling the same program to run on the RHEL 5.1 NFS server to access the 35 GB file locally (on the NFS server instead on HP-UX) and the program completed successfully, processing the whole file (about 7 hours of processing) with no "RPC: Authentication error." In addition, I have been running the nfs mount with the same machines for quite some time, but not with such large files sizes.

Ubuntu :: Error Messages At Boot-time?

Jul 1, 2010

I just upgraded to 10.04 through the Update Manager. During the updated however I got an error telling me that it was unable to install something. Sorry, I can't remember what it was; it didn't stop the updated so I assumed it wasn't that important. Anyways, I don't know if this is because of that error, but during the boot process and when shutting the computer I get console messages. When I boot it tells me that "mounting none on /dev failed No such device" and when I shut down I get these messages.I see this was asked before and that it isn't a big issue, but I'd still like to solve it. The problem is that I'm pretty new to Ubuntu and Linux in general I don't know how to follow the very general instructions given in that thread.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Getting Firefox / Thunderbird Error Messages

Nov 10, 2010

Problem-cannot mount 2 other samba computers on my ubuntu 10.04 via 'sudo mountall'. Additionally I now get Firefox/Thunderbird error messages as listed below. Had no problems with ubuntu UNTIL I attempted install of VirtualBox running WinXP client in my Ubuntu host. VirtualBox seemed to install ok but upon startup of WinXP client all I got was a black screen. To close it I had to do "Power Off" which VBox manual says is like a hard power off and is to be avoided. So I guess it's like I crashed XP within Ubuntu.

Now - ubuntu boots ok except will not auto mount other samba connected computers. Manually running 'sudo mountall' in terminal gives --
p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } swapon: /dev/disk/by-uuid/24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18: swapon failed: Device or resource busy
mountall: swapon /dev/disk/by-uuid/24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18 [2235] terminated with status 255
mountall: Problem activating swap: /dev/disk/by-uuid/24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18
retrying with upper case share name
mount error(6): No such device or address
Refer to the mount.cifs( manual page (e.g. man mount.cifs)
mountall: mount /media/samba_share [2239] terminated with status 32

Additionally I now get these warning messages when Firefox and Thunderbird start. (They do start and seem to work fine.)--
Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See [URL] for information. (Details - 1: Server ping error: IDLmg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0)
p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } What I've tried-

1) fstab UUID matches error UUID above and matches UUID from blkid command:
fstab =#Entry for /dev/sdc2 :
UUID=24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18 none swap sw 0 0
p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; }
blkid = /dev/sdc2: UUID="24c4c591-47ec-44f1-ac52-c0e2f5850c18" TYPE="swap"

2) Reinstalled mountall from synaptic pkg manager; did not try to remove mountall and reinstall. To remove, removes LOTS of other packages from system - not brave enough to do that (yet).

3) Ran fsck on swap partition as below. Swap not found. (that confuses me.)p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } john@johndesk:~$ fsck /dev/sdc2
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
fsck: fsck.swap: not found
fsck: Error 2 while executing fsck.swap for /dev/sdc2
p { margin-bottom: 0.02in; page-break-before: auto; }p.cjk { font-size: 10pt; } 4) deleted all the files in ~/.dbus/session-bus. Ubuntu just rebuilds the same file back.

Ubuntu :: Error Messages When Attempting To Boot 9.10

Ubuntu :: Several Grub Error Messages On Startup

May 1, 2011

I just installed Natty on my laptop. It has SSD drive, so to align the file system to the physical block size properly I created the partitions manually. After the installation it only boots to the GRUB recovery console, so I tried re-installing GRUB from Live CD by:

Code:
sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda

It now boots to the system but always shows the following error messages instead of the GRUB menu on every boot:

Code:
error: file not found.
error: file not found.
error: no suitable mode found.
error: no video mode activated.
error: file not found.
error: file not found.

I suspect that I've missed out something during the installation, since SSD drives seem to need some more attention.

Ubuntu :: 'grub Loading' And No Other Error Messages

Mar 19, 2010

I have a CLEVO laptop and it currently has Windows 7 installed. I now want to create a separate partition to install Ubunutu 9.10 64bit. I attempted to install this and the install part worked fine but as soon as I rebooted all I seem to be getting after the BIOS is 'grub loading'. I get no other error messages and am stumped on what the problem is. It also meant I couldnt load windows either but I fixed this by loading the windows cd, running repair and then fixing the MBR which another thread mentioned. Once this was done windows loading up ok. I have checked nearly every setting and it has made no difference. I tried reinstalling 9.10 but came up with the same problem. I am not sure what I did in Windows may have caused it. I have a 320gb drive and I shrunk it using disk management as I know the ubuntu will see this free space and install the OS onto it. Should I have left this and let 9.10 create some space automatically during install?

Just bought a brand new Acer Aspire 5745G, straight away I wanted to install Ubuntu 10.10, I stuck in the cd and rebooted the new laptop that currently only seemed to have Linpus Linux, I then got masses of error messages saying something such as cannot run var/ etc etc and then

:cannot touch 'var/lock/subsys/local': input/output error

and then...

EXT2-fs error (device sda1) : ext2_lookup: deleted inode referenced (lots of numbers here)

It does this for many, many lines then sites there for ages doing nothing and wont allow me to type any commands ( I dont know any command really apart from 'reboot') and then finally after 5 mins or so shows the command prompt [root@localhost /]# but I cant do anything from here.

I've done some searches and found this thread:

but startx and system-cofig-display dont work and just says bad commands.

Ive also tried changing the settings so it always reboots from dvd, same problem, made a USB ubuntu start up, forced booting from usb, same again.
