I've been trying to fix the problem since the past 6 hours and no clue what's going wrong.The system was working fine until I switched it off and on. First I get the initramfs error. I clicked on 'e' when shown the box to choose Ubuntu Generic/Recovery/Memory Test options.

I insert my live cd, I restart Windows, I click F12, I click boot from CD Drive, and a purple screen with two icons appear on the bottom. Then about 1 second later, the screen becomes black, and a _ icon starts flashing for 10 minutes up in the top-left-hand corner. After that, my screen just becomes black.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.
Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.
I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).
Ubuntu 10.10 doesn't boot at all. The liveCD only boots once every like 30 attempts, installing from liveCD froze, but the Alternate CD worked and installed ubuntu. A little kinda like the liveCD, if I try like 30 times, it might manage to boot once in normal mode.That line keeps on repeating, the the xxx.xxx integer changes each time, and this goes on forever.I tried removing my floppy drive, but it didn't help.I tried to boot with fd0=noprobeThe one time it booted, when I restarted, it froze while trying to restart.

I have a Windows / Ubuntu dual boot system and I recently upgraded my system to 10.04 from the package manager. I ran into what seem to be not an unusual issue with the new version of GRUB2 being installed hosing up the MBR. When I try to boot now I get a message stating: the symbol 'grub_puts_' not found.
There are a few posts and solutions out there about the issue... but the most promising ones, using the Ubuntu 10.04 liveCD don't work for me. The GRUB changes don't seem to stick. It's almost like I'm doing all the grub command line work in a virtual system that gets wiped out as soon as I reboot.
For reference, here is one of the posts I've been working w/, some links in there seemed very promising, but again nothing seem to stick for me from the liveCD:[URL]..Should I be using some rescue disk of some sort? Or is there a way to boot directly to a command line from the Ubuntu CD menu?
Does anyone know if Apparmor will work on the Ubuntu 10.04 livecd? I know there are currently issues running Apparmor on stacked filesystems with aufs. Currently a casper scripts disables Apparmor during boot up. Would be very useful if it could be run in a live session.

I get it to the main screen then I select "Try Ubuntu without making changes to my system" and I get a whole bunch of information to pop up... looks like techno giberish to me. Then I get what essentially looks like a prompt, except no matter what I type I get nothing out of it. I just want to be able to use my liveCD without issue.
P.S. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite Laptop that has windows 7 installed.

Im trying to build an initrd image for my livecd using cpio -o -H newc, but the livecd can't boot. If I create the initrd image using mkfs.ext2 then it works.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAbout a week ago, I noticed that my usplash doesn't do the loading bar (this is with any usplash theme). When I shut down, it works. At boot up, I get the back and forth bar, but when it's time for the loading bar, I just get a black screen with a flashing under score until the gdm login screen appears. I'm sure I am probably to blame, as I am constantly changing stuff.What command will show some info about this, or is there some log file I should look to. I would be grateful for any help.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've happily finished a SWE course that required VS2010, and thus a new computer to run the hog. Now that the course is done, I'm installing Ubuntu. As the post title implies, the live CD works well and the install goes fine. I'm able to boot up in Ubuntu and do an update. After that, though, Ubuntu freezes on boot. It gets as far as the moving dots but freezes right after that.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Fedora (F13) for the first time, on a new HDD, to give myself a dual-boot system. So currently I have:
So, at the appropriate stage in the install menu, there is an option for where to install GRUB, and a drop-down to choose which drive is the primary BIOS boot drive.
However, in both cases, no other drive except my new sdc is visible. So, I can install GRUB to MBR of sdc, or to first sector of boot partition - but no option to put it to my primary boot drive MBR on sda.
Likewise, in the GRUB configuration page, if I go to Add another OS, the only option it gives me is my new Fedora install. It doesn't list the Vista OS on sda at all.
The result is that I can boot to either OS by changing the boot drive priority in BIOS.
I guess my question is this:
- is this expected behaviour from the installer, meaning that I'll need to configure GRUB manually somehow? (gulp ) or
- did I do something wrong in the install process? or
- is this some weird bug manifesting itself?
I wonder why fedora livecd images cannot be booted by grub2 loopback method, which works with ubuntu and debian.i have tried something like this:

I'm using 'Adobe Flash plug-in 10.3.183.4ubuntu0.11.04.1', installed from the package repos on kubuntu, and since the last update, it has broken all flash functionality in both rekonq and firefox.I have tried removing and reinstalling the package multiple times, both with and without the browsers open. Can anyone suggest a way to restoring functionality?

Everything is setup and I'm on the net on it, except for some reason the Netgear GA311 I'm using for the internal network doesn't seem to be loading a driver. I've tried modprobing 8139 (which it says isn't found) as well as 8139too, 8139 too goes through ok, but it doesn't make any change, with lshw still claiming that it is "unclaimed". It seems that the Realtek chipset this card is based on is extremely compatible with Linux and I'm having trouble finding anyone with a similar issue with it.

The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. I'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000
I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a Dell computer of mine but I can't get it to boot past the loading screen. I'm using 10.04 live CD. At the loading screen (boot, memory test, etc..) I select to boot the live CD and after that, I get a black screen followed by no signal from my monitor. My monitor is a 42" LCD TV (I had plans to turn this PC into a HTPC using Ubuntu and Boxee). I know Linux will work on this box, because it has in the past. Now, before I used to have an ATI Radeon X 1300 PCI-E card and now I am using an ATI Radeon 2900GT, and since cannot boot.
Does anyone have any idea on how I can get this to work?
I have this annoying problem since day one.I am testing out Red Hat RHEL5, everything is fine except DNS look up.If I ping www.google.com, it doesn't work, ping ip address it all works;if I bring up browser, put www.google.com it doesn't work, can't find the name, however, simply put ip address there it works.My DNS seeting seems ok, and the DNS works from Windows box.

all config files need.conf /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
How to write this code so I wont get this error and I can load these modules and also how to edit the modprobe.conf.
The code is below, using fedora 13.
You must load these two modules to work with card reader.
First : Remove the card from the Reader!
AS superuser type in console :
1. /sbin/modprobe tifm_core <enter>
2. /sbin/modprobe tifm_sd <enter>
If you want to automate these modules loading do the following :
edit the /etc/modprobe.conf file
add these :
alias mmc_core tifm_core
alias mmc_card tifm_sd
