I'm dualbooting Slackware and Arch Linux. I'm using Slackwares GRUB installed from /extra Loading Slackware from GRUB works fine, but loading Arch Linux doesn't. Here's the messages when trying to load Arch from GRUB:

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I try and boot my Debian computer I get the messages: Grub Loading stage1.5. Grub loading, please wait... Error 15 Is there any way of recovering from this - or is it simply a fresh install? I was attempting an upgrade from Lenny to Squeeze and despite a few hurdles it looked like it was all happening. Got the new kernel loading, and the new grub. It looked as though grub2 was working so I ran the grub-remove-legacy-support command (something like that) and now my computer won't boot grub or Linux.
I'm assuming the MBR on my harddrive is lost, however I don't know what state the partition is in. I'm guessing that maybe this has been lost as well. I tried a few tools from the Ultimate Boot CD but nothing here was able to re-install my grub or boot from any partition or even mount my file-system. I'm fearing the worst but would like it confirmed before I blow it all away with a new install.
I'm trying to install slackware 32 bit 13.1.After loading kernel it asks for keyboard configuration, but keyboard (usb wireless) doesn't work.
Keyboard works on the old 13.0 installation, on bios and also in the boot options of 13.1 installation cd.
I've tried removing legacy usb support and changing usb2.0 speed from high to full. Nothing changed.
Anybody with this strange problem? (kernel of setup seems also to detect it correctly as a trust keyboard).

Local techie says the hardware is good. Tried reloading Ubuntu from CD. Tried loading the unmentionable OS.

I was trying to make uDev let me mount and unmount devices from my Xfce desktop... I installed udiskie, modified fstab, and finally got it working, but somewhere in the process, my terminal emulator just... died. Now, when I try to launch it, I get this error message: "" (I think I can translate that as Failed to execute child... process? not quite sure) "getpt failed: Not such file or directory." So far, I've been looking but couldn't find anything similar anywhere. also: this happens with all the terminal emulators I've tried (Terminal, gnome-terminal, sonata), except for xterm... which does just nothing: doesn't launch or send error messages.

Can I just source the 32dev.sh and then run sbopkg -i if the source for the package I want to create isn't 64bit capable? I might need to change the $ARCH variable to x86_64 too, right?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've recently upgraded Arch kernel on my laptop to 2.6.38.4 and after reboot I found out that eth0 is missing in ifconfig -a (it only showed lo and wlan0). The same issue is in 2.6.38.5 that came out just couple of days ago. Any idea what can be causing this? What info should I add?

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what file, etc is the equivalent of ARCH's /etc/rc.sysinit? I need to know this because I am having many problems making the new nfluxos iso's for ARCH because of how ARCH now mounts stuff at bootup

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just did the pacman -Syu command today since i have had limited access to internet i could use with arch lately, (been tethering via droid which is only compatible in ubuntu) The command line works fine, i even reinstalled X to see if that was the problem,whenever i do startx it loads up for a second but before my xfce screen even pops up the screen blinks and blackens.

View 5 Replies View RelatedOne thing that really bothers me about Slackware is the lack of unified, well maintained, and up-to-date documentation, but what keeps me coming back is the outstanding community. I see a lot of community contributions floating around on these forums, but they often get buried in all the questions and other posts people create. I know there's a search feature, but sometimes it's fun to browse an organized list of the community's work and see if I find anything fun or interesting.
Back when I used Arch Linux, one of my favorite stops at the forums was the Community Contributions section. The FreeBSD forums also have a section for user-contributed HOWTOse should have a section like this. Call it "Contributions" and place it by the "Installation" section at the top of this forum. It would provide a great place for users to check out what the other slackers have come up with without making a thread of their own to ask (which will probably result in many duplicate threads) or digging up an ancient thread.The only new threads allowed there could be a HOWTO, a new process or method a user discovered, or a user-made script/program/etc. Of course, other users should be able to comment with their replies for suggestions and/or improvements.
My Server runs "fine", then I type init 6 for rebooting or some cron job initiates Init 6 and my system stops in grub at: GRUB loading stage1.5. Error 18 After another Ctrl+Alt+Del the system boots as if anything happened. this is why I doubt that it's an issue of too big HDD or BIOS.

both are Maxtors with ext4 fs. primary is 20 gb and secondary 80 gb.
Jumpers are set to cable select.
Boot order in bios is correct. (primary first, secondary isn't in the list at all)

I have tried ubuntu sec 8.4 recover mode and all i get is unreconized command.. i do not know how to set anything.. i have no disks for this not even the orginal windows recover disk.. is their anything i can do to get win to run as it use to??
Yesterday I partitioned my hard drive with kubuntu netbook remix and windows 7. after a few hours and reboots i turned on my computer and it said Grub loading. unknown filesystem rescue grub> It looks like allot of people have been having similar errors recently with windows 7.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an Ubuntu Jaunty server with 4 x 1 TB Hitachi SATA Hard drives and a 4GB IDE Flash Drive. I installed the root file system to the IDE Flash Drive and setup the 4 x 1 TB Hard Drives as a RAID 5 for the home partition (I actually allotted 3 Gigs on each drive as swap space as well). My problem occurs however when I restart my computer after the server installation. Grub doesn't load fully and I am left with a "GRUB_" message on the screen.My root partition is ext3 and I have also tried the same configuration with a boot partition as well on the IDE drive to no avail.

I think it's because I've also modified /etc/groups and add an username after audio: and video: group, but I forgot that and had to remove slackware from the machine.

I am new to Linux. I have installed RHEL 5.4 on my PC with preloaded Windows XP.
Windows was set as the first boot kernel. So if i do not choose which OS to be loaded it will load Windows by Default.
Today I got an error saying GRub Loading Stage2 read error.
About a week ago, I noticed that my usplash doesn't do the loading bar (this is with any usplash theme). When I shut down, it works. At boot up, I get the back and forth bar, but when it's time for the loading bar, I just get a black screen with a flashing under score until the gdm login screen appears. I'm sure I am probably to blame, as I am constantly changing stuff.What command will show some info about this, or is there some log file I should look to. I would be grateful for any help.

I searched all over and didn't see a similar issue anywhere, I did an install of CentOS as a server (no GUI) with only the base. Partition is /boot ext3, size of 100MB. The rest of the drive is partitioned as / with ext3. This is being done on a CompactFlash card of 32GB in size. The BIOS sees it as an IDE drive.
When the install completes and the system reboots, the grub stops at the grub> prompt. There is no menu for OS options. If I do the following commands:
grub>root (hd0,0)
grub>kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.18-194.el5 root=LABEL=/
grub>initrd /initrd-2.6.18-194.el5.img
grub>boot
I am trying to install my laptop in a triple-boot configuration with Fedora 10, Windows XP and Windows 7 beta. I did already installed them in that order. This is how it is layed out on the harddisk:
Now i want to use grub to present a menu at boot so i can select an OS. Because I installed XP last it boots straight into XP. I've understood i should be able to do the following:
All goes well until the last step (grub-install). It gives an error stating that /dev/sda doesn't exist, which is correct; It doesn't. I do have the "device" listed outside of the chrooted environment.
My question is: How do I get /dev/sda available in my chrooted environment?
I have ubuntu 10.10 running on my HP dv5 pavilion laptop So today i tried to reinstall grub on my pc .. i removed grub-pc and grub-common using synaptic then booted up with a live cd of ubuntu 10.04 i then mounted sda11 to mnt using sudo mount /dev/sda11 /mnt sda11 being my ubuntu directory containing the /boot then i installed grub to it using sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt /dev/sda it reported as installation finished.No error reported then i unmounted /mnt and checked for /boot/grub/grub.cfg seems like the file is missing so are the files in /etc/grub.d/ reinstall my grub back
