The web cam on my Dell Inspiron mini 10 doesn't work properly. Cheese only takes very dark pictures but no video and the main screen stays dark all the time. Skype transmits a very dark image, too. How can that be tweaked.

I'm using a basically vanilla Lubuntu 11.04 My Logitech E 3500 webcam works fine with Cheese. I have just installed Skype, but my voice isn't picked up on the test call, and no video either (the webcam light remains off). I've tried logging off and into Skype.
I have a serious problem with my sound card and Ubuntu 10.04. In the others distros (Gentoo, Sabayon, Fedora, Puppy...) the mic run very good, but in Ubuntu i can't record any sound. I can ear the sound exit from the speaker, but with sw like Sound Recorder, Audacity and Skype i can't record the sound. I tried EVERY setting in alsa mixer/Gnome alsa mixer but I can't resolve the problem.
I'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?
When I try to hibernate, the computer just goes to a blank, black screen and doesn't turn off. I have to hold the power button to get it to shut down, and when I turn it back on none of the programs running before hibernation have been saved.
I just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000
I have a creative zen mozaic that I'm trying to get working on ubuntu 10.10. I didn't get it to work on 10.04 but I didn't really try that hard. I conenct the player. It shows up as a disk and I copy over files but they wont be recognized by the player. It say's it's nothing there. If you open it in windows they will show and if you just remve them and copy them back in in windows the player will recognize them. How do I get this to work with ubuntu? This is the only reason to keep windows for me atm.
There is a basic driver for it. I was wondering if anyone got it to work. Or is there another card that has been used successfully, especially with recording from a microphone. I am getting poor input from the mic source. Levels are low and broken up. Extensive research has pointed to ALSA/PulseAudio not being able to fine tune all sound cards. I am using the onboard currently, an ALC262.
In the meantime I was tempted to set the priorities higher for sound in general, in other words tweak ALSA and PA. Reason being is that many across a few distros have problems when resources are squeezed, like the times when proc load is at or near 100%, for example. I do not know how to tweak sound. Does anyone know? I still want to try the Titanium since it could be utilized in 7 (ouch) as a luxury for recording "what you hear", and for superior sound reproduction as well.
i have dell inspiron N5010 and i have installed ubuntu on it.i am using ubuntu for the first time and i am having a real hard time as my mic and my webcam which are built in my laptop.how can i make them work.
I am using Suse 11.4, with the Gnome desktop. I have downloaded the VLC player, but cannot work out how to make it play CDs in the CD drive. Right clicking on the Audio Disc icon that appears on the desktop whenever I load a disc doesn't give me an option to Play using VLC. Is there a way to make VLC the default player for CDs?
I have difficulty with my webcam and Skype. I can see the other person but she can't see me. From a previous thread: Are you sure your camera isnt working? Supported hardware drivers are in the kernel usually. Test: press alt+f2, type gstreamer-properties go to the video tab and see if your camera is listed as a device. If yes, press the test button. This test was OK. I could see my face on the screen.
Quote: Ah, the Skype camera thing. Launch it this way: LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype
I tried this. It launches Skype OK, but the little window that should show what my webcam sees, appears full of black and white static.
So I tried skyping this morning and I could not get my webcam to work it seemed like ti wasn't turning on. TO double check that it just was not skype I opened up Cheese the webcam picture application and it said "no device" found. The only thing I have really changed on my computer since I last skyped were just system updates so something broke in it.
I can't get flash controls to work. If the video auto-plays, it starts just fine, if not, I'm out of luck. I've tried reinstalling flash through the software center. Even if it autoplays, I can't control volume or pause or anything. I'm at the mercy of whatever is already there.
Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 - all updated as of 1/2/2009 Firefox 3.5.6 On a Lenovo Thinkpad R400
When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. And when I type "pulseaudio" in the terminal it gives me this:
Today I wanted to make my webcam work in a flash chat. I added myself to the video group and added export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so to my ~/.basrc file Then I loggued in again... and the problem is:
If I open a shell and start firefox from there (as a regular user), webcam will work ok. If I start Firefox from the top bar, it will NOT work. I checked preferences and it does not seem to do anything weird anybody has a clue? It seems weird to have that pretty top toolbar and not be able to use it.
I cannot use my motion eye webcam, here's the result of

i cannot use cheese, is there anyone know how to fix this problem?
My webcam worked with every application in Linux Mint6. I just upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 and find that the input from the webcam looks like a green TV without horizontal lock in Camorama and Skype. However it works perfectly with Cheese.
I can't make a webcam working on an ARM version of Debian (Raspbian for raspberryPI)
I'm trying to use a command line media player to show the webcam images (mplayer)
The command is: mplayer tv:///dev/video0 and I got this output:
Code: Select allPlaying tv:///dev/video0. the filename option must be an integer: dev/video0 Struct tv, field filename parsing error: dev/video0 Tv file format detected. Selected driver v4l2
Note aside: - I've tried 3 different cams(got the same error for all of them) - The output of the command: ls -ltr /dev/video* is crw-rw—-+ 1 root video 81, 0 Nov 11 09:06 /dev/video0 - The cam works in a program like "scratch" in a startx session but doesn't in the command line
my Logitech webcam C 200 under openSuse 11.2-22.214.171.124 appears as046d:0802, but in Skype I cannot see any image when testing the webcam. The correct audio input cannot be chosen either, it does not even appear in the drop-down box.I've installed the same webcam on a different machine with openSuse 11.2 and it worked out of the box, so I don't think there should be any additional driver required.
My webcam was working when I installed Fedora12. But now it doesn't work after about 2 months of playing with this OS. Because of this, I decided to reinstall it's driver.I downloaded it from ATrpms website, but if I try to install it the terminal says"/boot/vmlinuz-126.96.36.199-174.2.3_1.cubbi_tuxonice.fc12.x86_64 is needed by uvc-kmdl-188.8.131.52-174.2.3_1.cubbi_tuxonice.fc12-0.20090806-4.fc12.x86_64"File needed: /boot/vmlinuz-184.108.40.206-174.2.3_1.cubbi_tuxonice.fc12.x86_64File wanted to be installed: uvc-kmdl-220.127.116.11-174.2.3_1.cubbi_tuxonice.fc12-0.20090806-4.fc12.x86_64
