I wonder why fedora livecd images cannot be booted by grub2 loopback method, which works with ubuntu and debian.i have tried something like this:

Im trying to build an initrd image for my livecd using cpio -o -H newc, but the livecd can't boot. If I create the initrd image using mkfs.ext2 then it works.
View 2 Replies View Relatedi've started off using linux with ubuntu 10.10, and then i moved to linux mint 10 kde, and after finding out that it didn't support my hardware, in specifically my graphics card, i switched back to ubuntu 10.10, and from there i upgraded to 11.04. i hated the gui so i switched it from ubuntu to ubuntu (classic) environment. i also installed kubuntu-desktop too, and it looks a lot like mint 10 kde, i guess it uses kde 4.6, but... it's more stable for me. anyway, what i mean is that, originally ubuntu had a black background, linux mint 10 kde had a pretty cool custom mint background, ubuntu 11.04 has a purple background. i looked on videos, i found people using customized backgrounds, but they either don't explain how they got it *like for instance, someone said opensuse 11 or 13 has an icy penguin animated background, and someone else had one that you could scroll through.* or it's too complicated or outdated. is there a simple way to change your grub2 boot loader background image?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get my LiveCD (9.10) to boot but I can't get it to work. I get it to the main screen then I select "Try Ubuntu without making changes to my system" and I get a whole bunch of information to pop up... looks like techno giberish to me. Then I get what essentially looks like a prompt, except no matter what I type I get nothing out of it. I just want to be able to use my liveCD without issue.
P.S. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite Laptop that has windows 7 installed.
is there a livecd with grub2?I need an bootable .iso that starts latest version of grub2.(debian and ubuntu livecd use some custom format, they don't have the grub2 menu)
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm setting up a loopback server for work related testing. I have a small program that needs to be executed through telnet from about 200 IP's on the same network. On the server, I have to set a static ip, enable telnet login, and place my 2 program files in the appropriate folders so it will run. I have been on this for 2-3 days and haven't got far.
My /etc/Network/interfaces file is this...

The rest of terminal is filled up with these, and it states that the file only has 32 characters. I don't know if this is a privilege issue or not. I've read several threads on telnet, and lots of arguments about ssh, but I can't run ssh, so I need to enable telnet. There is not a security issue. I run a private network where the only valuable resource would probably be the text file with my IP address on it. Its also accessed by people that have very limited networking knowledge and no linux knowledge...

I'm using Wordpress on Apache localy to keep a diary (it's convenient because of the tags).
When I'm connected to any network (be it wired or wireless) my Apache (and Wordpress, of course) works just fine. But as soon as I go offline, I can't access the web server neither through browser nor by telneting to the 80th port. I have been logging into a server remotely and trying to set up a mailing list on it. The server is the newest version of ubuntu server: uname -a: Linux Themis 2.6.28-11-server #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 02:48:10 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux.I noticed I could not download packages with apt-get or ping domain names, and I can't even ping 127.0.0.1.And do you think there is something wrong with the network card?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install (L)ubuntu on an old AMD 1.66GHz based HP laptop, to dual boot with Windows XP. However I'm running into an issue that I haven't come across on any other machine before where after selecting "Install Lubuntu" from the main boot menu, it moves to the scrolling dots splash/loading screen and after ~30 sec or a minute it freezes. There is no error, it doesn't reboot or eject the disk even after several hours of sitting on that splash screen, with the dots frozen, no CD activity, and no HDD activity. I get the same result if I try to boot it as a LiveCD as well.
Can someone help diagnose whats going on? Is it possible changing some boot options will allow it to install? I'm not quite sure where to go with this one.
My old HDD died. I have 10.10 installed on a usb stick. This is a full installation not a LiveCD. I downloaded the live CD and Unetbootin.
Can I use unetbootin to create a bootable 'LiveCD' onto a partition of my new hard drive?
Without a CD drive, I can't think of any other way to get an installation onto my new HDD
EDIT - got ubuntu installed but had to do it at work, so i am still curious as how one would proceed with only a USB (full installation) and a blank HDD with no access to any other computers.

But when I try building the minimal image as a test, I get lots of errors, as seen in the attached build log. There are lots of things that don't seem to work. Is this project at a state where it's not currently usable? Or do I have a problem with my system configuration? I was running at root.

I downloaded Fedora 10 LiveCD, then stick it in to my computer. It seems to start up nicely, but then I get this error:

i initilally installed ubuntu 9.10 then installed windows 7 ,then i recovered grub2 using livecd as told in the post [URL] i did "sudo update-grub" and got windows 7 menu entry but when i select that entry windows 7 does not load but the grub2 is reloaded again.
i cant boot to windows 7.
Windows 7 have 100 mb partition "System Reserved" the grub2 points to that partition but still windows 7 not loaded.

Despite a valiant effort to find and install grub2 I've decided instead to download and install Lucid Linx. However when I visit the download site on ubuntu.com it gives no options as to where I might save it. Since I'm currently running Karmic from a LiveCD the filesystem doesn't have enough room for the 700mg .iso, although I have plenty of room on the 40 gig HDD. How do I point the download towards my hdd rather than the LiveCD filesystem?

how to add packages to an existing Ubuntu ISO or LiveCD (Think like slipstreaming Windows Service Packs into Windows installation CDs, if that helps). I want to add things such as more games or the restricted extras plugins so that I don't have to go get them every time I install the OS on someone's computer, things like that. Not as important, but if it would be possible to remove packages
PS I'm not necessarily looking for a specific version, but I'm currently running 9.10 on one machine and 10.04 (soon to be 10.10) on another. A guide for any Ubuntu distro would be fine though. I'm just as interested in learning the theory of it as I am the actual execution.
Downloaded the F10 live CD. Booted to it, got past the white, blue, and dark blue loading bar then my screen would be covered in black and white lines. No sign of the GUI except for a mouse cursor. ctrl+alt+backspace would cause the display to blink off and then come back on to the same thing. ctrl+alt+f2 would bring me to a terminal, logged in as root, but from there I couldn't do anything. startx would tell me I had x running on another screen.
hitting tab when booting the livecd and adding "xdriver=vesa" and "nomodeset" to the boot line. That works. I get to the desktop at native res with desktop effects. Killer. I tried to install; install went flawless, rebooted to my HDD and the same issue, black and white bars. When booted to my HDD, however, ctrl+alt+f2 doesn't bring me to a terminal, it causes my monitor to go into sleep mode and my computer becomes unresponsive so I can't do anything from the command line.
Here's what I'm getting at : how do I get my installed version of F10 to do the "xdriver=vesa" and "nomodeset" args that the livecd can do?
My machine is a home built machine I bought off of a friend. P4 2.4 ghz, GB RAM, 2 80GB HDDs, Radeon x1600.
If I turn off the quiet mode in the boot options, it does throw up some errors (e.g. SQASHFS), and then stops after "starting abrt daemon".
On an AMD Athelon. It worked fine of F9, but started playing up, so I'm looking at upgrading.
Is it still possible to use LiveCD to boot into rescue mode and run fsck?
I just want to run fsck on my hard disk and make sure all is well.
Does fsck provide and logs or records of what it found?
Is it possible to run fsck without LiveCD?
I am trying to install Fedora on my computer but I am getting a kernel panic at liveCD boot after boot menu. It occurs to me for F13 and F14 (all x64, F14 x86 seems to boot fine but I'm trying to host a x64 guest OS on it so I need to get the x64 version to work)
My system specs:
Dual Opteron 265
4GB RAM
Asus K8N-DL (nVidia nForce Pro 2000, BIOS 1010)
I also tried to install F14 in some other computer (which worked flawlessly) and put the HDD into the computer in question, which gave me the same kernel panic.
I have a Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD (and I plan to keep using it as just a LiveCD); this works fine.
Firefox works fine too, and installing a flash player plugin is all right.
The problem appears when I reboot and see that Firefox no longer has the flash plugin installed.
So I tried making a persistent image USB stick for this, added the persistent keyword at the end of the boot options, and Firefox still forgets that it can actually play ..... videos.
The persistent image USB seems to be doing something, at least browsing through it shows several folders, for instance /usr/lib/adobe-flashplugin which constains a file libflashplayer.so
It's just that Firefox doesn't seem to care. What else should I do?
I have a system built and running in exactly the basic configuration I want, with my recompiled kernel, extra packages, special drivers, everything works, life is good. What I want to do is take this exact setup and create an image I can copy onto a bootable USB stick. Is there a way to essentially take the contents of my hard drive and copy that onto a USB stick and then boot directly from that? The use case behind this is that I am building an embedded system of which I may have hundreds of boxes with identical hardware and software configurations. Instead of hard drives, I am going to use USB sticks for cost efficiency and maintenance. My idea is that when it's time to upgrade, I could just image a hundred new sticks and go out and swap them.
My issue is that a standard LiveCD install gets me maybe 25% of the way to a finished system. I need to recompile the kernel for realtime support with my CPU, add some fidgety drivers for some specific hardware, and install a whole bunch of additional packages. I suppose I could create a makefile(s) to replicate all the manual steps of the buildout but that seems like a lot of unnecessary complexity IF I can just image that running system as it is.
If I use Clonezilla to backup my Ubuntu partition I get all sorts of problems trying to re-install Grub2 after image reinstall. If I backup the whole HD will this include Grub so when I re-install the image I get the whole thing back again?

I ran grub-install, it installed fine and when I rebooted it worked, only I was presented with a command line with the message that "Minimal command-line editing is still supported etc". I'm dual-booting with Windows and F13 and I couldn't boot into either of them so I had to reinstall F13 and replace grub. How do I install grub2 while still being able to boot into Windows or F13?
On a Linux CD/DVD, there are compressed filesystem images for the live version for KDE or Gnome for example, but they have no extension, but they are clearly an image file ( compressed filesystem images for the live version before installation ) !!
I was wondering, How do I mount these compressed filesystem images, after I copy the ISO content of the CD/DVD on my system .... I want to edit some files or packages and make some changes, like if I want to customize a live version of gnome for example ! ... ( I know you might be tempted to tell me to use KIWI etc to customize etc ..... ) ... but I want to be able to mount the compressed file system image, then edit it for reading and writing while it is in a subdirectory on its own ... i want to open it ! ... is there a way to do this ??? ... these type of files have no extension ...
i can open this compressed filesystem image then to edit for read & write ... before I roll it back again ..... If and when I succeed .... what should I watch out for ? ... will the same compressed file image but slightly modified work again ?
PS. that same question could be kind of translated or be extended like : how do I use unionfs/squashfs programs on the command line to mount these image files with no extension for read & write mode ???
