When I try to hibernate, the computer just goes to a blank, black screen and doesn't turn off. I have to hold the power button to get it to shut down, and when I turn it back on none of the programs running before hibernation have been saved.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000

Why doesn't Hibernate work in Ubuntu 10.10?
I have tried to research the problem and suspect that the hibernation function is not a default function of the system. But how do I install it.
My desktop is a Compaq CQ5110F. It's a dual boot system and Fedora 11 resides on sda3 of hard disk (WD 3200AAJS-6).Both suspend and hibernate don't work, but the symptoms are different. For hibernate, after resume, there are some messages (??) about register errors quickly flashed on the screen, then the logon window shows but the system hangs. For suspend, I cannot wake up the system by hitting some keys on the keyboard. After I press the power button, LCD doesn't get any signal. I remember hibernate worked when I was using Fedora10, but wireless card did not automatically reconnect at that time. Also hibernate works fine for vista.

If I type swapon -a, I get something like this:

It worked great before I did the upgrade... I've upgraded to 2.6.37-rc5.
everything works perfect including reboot and shutdown but not the hibernate or suspend (sleep). Whenever i try to do Suspend, my caps lock starts blinking and the screen goes white
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhat is the deal with Ubuntu and power states? "Suspend" and "Hibernate" don't do anything. Whether I invoke one manually, the most that happens is that my screen goes blank. The monitor does not go to standby, my hard drives don't spin down, and the machine doesn't go into standby. Whenever I try to start the "Power Management" applet (System->Preferences->Power Management), it seems to hang. Takes a long time - up to a couple of minutes - for a window to appear. I also just noticed that one of my HDD's seems to be running constantly, even though I'm not moving any files around. Not sure where to start straightening things out.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe announcement of several new make scripts in the 2.6.32 release notes is very exciting.Most people uses the kernel shipped by distros - and that's good. But some people like to compile their own kernels from kernel.org, or maybe they like following the Linux development and want to try it. Configuring your own kernel, however, has become a very difficult and tedious task - there're too many options, and some times userspace software will stop working if you don't enable some key option. You can use a standard distro .config file, but it takes too many time to compile all the options it enables.
To make easier the process of configuration, a new build target has been added: make localmodconfig. It runs "lsmod" to find all the modules loaded on the current running system. It will read all the Makefiles to map which CONFIG enables a module. It will read the Kconfig files to find the dependencies and selects that may be needed to support a CONFIG. Finally, it reads the .config file and removes any module "=m" that is not needed to enable the currently loaded modules. With this tool, you can strip a distro .config of all the unuseful drivers that are not needed in our machine, and it will take much less time to build the kernel. There's an additional "make localyesconfig" target, in case you don't want to use modules and/or initrds.

I've seen this problem on dozens of different forums but I haven't found anybody with my specific problem or a solution that has worked. I have an nVidia GeForce 8400GS which I just installed in my Debian box and I can't get the HDMI audio to work. Kernel version is 2.6.32-5-amd64, nvidia driver version is 260.19.36, alsa version is 1.0.21. Output of lsmod shows that nvidia module is loaded. Output of aplay -l code...
I feel like I've looked everywhere on the internet for a solution to this and I just can't find one. It seems that everybody is able to see their nVidia audio device using aplay -l and then the solution goes from there.
whenever i'm in the process of compiling and installing a new kernel in ubuntu lucid lynx i get an error message when i get to the make bzimage part is there some sort of program that i needed to install first or is there an alternative to doing this.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI can't get flash controls to work. If the video auto-plays, it starts just fine, if not, I'm out of luck. I've tried reinstalling flash through the software center. Even if it autoplays, I can't control volume or pause or anything. I'm at the mercy of whatever is already there.

When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. And when I type "pulseaudio" in the terminal it gives me this:

I am using Suse 11.4, with the Gnome desktop. I have downloaded the VLC player, but cannot work out how to make it play CDs in the CD drive. Right clicking on the Audio Disc icon that appears on the desktop whenever I load a disc doesn't give me an option to Play using VLC. Is there a way to make VLC the default player for CDs?

View 7 Replies View Relatedmy Eee PC has various troubles with the current Lucid kernel (2.6.32). These include, that the wifi won't work and that I can't use hibernate. A netbook without wifi is a little bit useless I even tried the usual bugfixes, that you can find in the web (installing the original RAlink drivers, updating to 2.6.33), but nothing really worked.As a consequence, I downgraded to Karmic again, were everything just worked fine.My question is now, is it possible to run Lucid with the older kernel available in Karmic?

I have realized that I didn't have a hibernate option. I should be able to hibernate because I have over 5 GB LVM swap partition and only 2 GB of ram on my Laptop. How do I get the hibernate feature back?
EDIT the original installation was with encrypted home but I moved off of the encrypted home.

Video driver: "ati".I have only been using Linux for less than a year now but I have never been able to get hibernate mode working. Had the same problem on previous kernels and with Nvidia drivers. Tonight I tried removing all traces of any nvidia drivers hiding in my system (I recently changed to an ATI card), and also upgrading to grub 2. Still no luck.If I use the "hibernate" option from the shutdown menu, I just get a black screen with a blinking cursor. If I use s2disk, I get a little bit more of a hint, but still not very helpful. Then it just locks up after that. Power is still on and it never shuts down. I have a 6 gig swap partition set up that is enabled, so it is definitely not a swap issue.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 (amd64) on my MacBook 3,1 (1GB memory). Most things work perfectly on install, and I've got the iSight working now too!
However, although suspend works fine, hibernate does not. When I try to hibernate, the screen goes blank with the back light on for a few seconds, then the screen goes off completely for about 0.1 of a scond and I hear the optical drive whirr (like it does when booting), and then about 4 or 5 seconds after that it finally powers off.
Then, when I restart, I see the rEFIt menu, then the GRUB menu and it appears to boot like normal and *not* resume from hibernate!
I'm not sure what log I should look in? When I look in /var/log/pm-suspend.log the last line says "performing hibernate", but there's nothing about even attempting to resume.
UPDATE: Forgot to mention, I have a swap partition that is larger than 1GB.
UPDATE 2: Also, after attempting to hibernate, when the system restarts, WiFi has been disabled -- I have to double-tap (right-click) on the WiFi icon and re-enable it. I *think* this is because the hibernate process disables networking, but it then fails to re-enable it because is fails to resume.
I've re-partitioned my existing windows xp disk to do a dual boot with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid. The installation went fine and I am able to use both the operating systems just fine.
But when I boot into windows xp I donot have the hibernte/sleep options available anymore.
debug the issue and get back those options ?
Note: I have made the windows as default boot option in grub.
