Just installed Xubuntu 10.10 on an older computer, but when it boots, Xfce does not. It's just the terminal, asks for my username and password, and that's it.
Like for instance, if I have Ubuntu Lucid Lynx installed with XFCE, and it has an applications made for XFCE. will the applications also work on say some other distro like, Wolvix, that is an XFCE-based distro~????
What I am trying to say is: Do applications that are made for XFCE, work on ANY distro that has XFCE installed?
After switching from KDE to XFCE, knetworkmanager doesn't automatically start when you log in. If you open it yourself, you magically get internet. How can I add KNetworkManager to the programs automatically started by XFCE?
I just installed a fresh copy of Xubuntu 10.10 on a penstick and everything was working fine at work and at home. Now when I got to the work this morning I connected the stick to my office network and I got this error:
PHP Code:
Could not look up internet address for localhost.localdomain.This will prevent Xfc from operating correctly. It may be possible to correct this problem by adding localhost.localdomain to the file /etc/hosts on your system
Why did this error present itself if nothing was changed? All that was done was that is was tested at work and at home.
I installed Debian 8.2 XFCE but i just can't get the sound to work. With speaker-test in console the sounddevice works, but in any other application it doesn't.
I checked if the channels in the alsamixer were muted and tried everything I could think of but i couldn't get it to work on XFCE. On GNOME it works fine.
I really a newbie to xfce. I was using gnome 2 orignally then since I'm using Arch Linux (64-bit), it was updated to Gnome 3. After long weeks of daily use, I didn't like gnome 3. Now, I decided to use xfce. I did a fresh install (after formatting my hdd) of Arch, I put installed XFCE + SLIM login manager. Almost all works fine until I decided to install Compiz. After installing Compiz, for some reason gtk-window-decorator --replace (the one that you put under CCSM > Window Decoration > Command) does not work. Only "emerald --replace" and "kde4-window-decorator --replace" works. Unfortunately, I don't like emerald. When I run gtk-window-decorator --replace in the terminal it gives me this error:
Code:
gtk-window-decorator: error while loading shared libraries: libmetacity-private.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory I made sure I installed the complete compiz+gtk package from pacman. BTW, I never had a problem with gnome 2 + compiz + gtk-window-decorator. I don't know if I have to do something extra in xfce to make gtk-window-decorator work.
EDIT: FYI, I use fusion-icon as an autostart application for me to automatically start compiz during startup.
I know that this not a Slackware question, but since Slackware 13.1 has XFCE 4.6.2 in its standard installation I just ask here. I have a problem with the event sounds in XFCE 4.6.2 on Debian Sid. I already have a thread about this problem here, and couldn't solve it till now. I need to know if this issue is related to Debian or to XFCE, before I ask at the XFCE mailing list. So just one simple question: Has any one of you that is using XFCE got the event sounds to work?
I don't know why this happen. In Slackware 13 it worked fine.
This is the output:
Code: QGtkStyle was unable to detect the current GTK+ theme. (process:4870): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: gtype.c:2458: initialization assertion failed, use IA__g_type_init() prior to this function (process:4870): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_once_init_leave: assertion `initialization_value != 0' failed
I'm using -current (xfce-4.6.2) I've noticed that the shortcuts I define aren't working anymore. The ones I define through windowmanager -> keyboard are ok, but the ones through keyboard-> application shortcuts are ignored.
I've been trying to fix the problem since the past 6 hours and no clue what's going wrong. The system was working fine until I switched it off and on. First I get the initramfs error. I clicked on 'e' when shown the box to choose Ubuntu Generic/Recovery/Memory Test options.
I'm trying to install Ubuntu on a Dell computer of mine but I can't get it to boot past the loading screen. I'm using 10.04 live CD. At the loading screen (boot, memory test, etc..) I select to boot the live CD and after that, I get a black screen followed by no signal from my monitor. My monitor is a 42" LCD TV (I had plans to turn this PC into a HTPC using Ubuntu and Boxee). I know Linux will work on this box, because it has in the past. Now, before I used to have an ATI Radeon X 1300 PCI-E card and now I am using an ATI Radeon 2900GT, and since cannot boot.
Does anyone have any idea on how I can get this to work?
I found a solution to my card reader problem in a another fedora post but when I type the code in terminal I get: all config files need.conf /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist How to write this code so I wont get this error and I can load these modules and also how to edit the modprobe.conf.
The code is below, using fedora 13. You must load these two modules to work with card reader. First : Remove the card from the Reader! AS superuser type in console : 1. /sbin/modprobe tifm_core <enter> 2. /sbin/modprobe tifm_sd <enter>
If you want to automate these modules loading do the following : edit the /etc/modprobe.conf file add these : alias mmc_core tifm_core alias mmc_card tifm_sd
I am having trouble loading my sound drivers after removing pulseaudio. (Yes, I did try and reinstall pulse, did it again with ALSA, no luck).
It appears that my sound drivers are not loaded, because cat /proc/asound/cards returns 'no soundcards' and aplay -l returns the same... the ouput was quite different before, I am sure I DO have soundcards and they did work before in Fedora 14.
Any Ideas how can I make the sound drivers load again ?
I am running CentOS 5.4, which I am occasionally managing via VNC from windows machine. This all occured after one long VNC session although I can't confirm this was the real reason. I also must say that I've seen some posts from people that had the same problem, but not anything helpful. Here is what happens:
Even if I start the machine from scratch I get the following error messages just before the login prompt and type of session window shows:
COULDN'T RECOGNIZE THE IMAGE FILE FORMAT FOR THE FILE '/USR/SHARE/GDM/THEMES/TREEFLOWER/BACKGROUND.PNG
THERE WAS AN ERROR LOADING THE THEME AND THE DEFAULT THEME COULD NOT BE LOADED. ATEMPTING TO START THE STANDARD GREETER.
If I choose GNOME and login I get more errors (for every icon I guess) saying:
COULD NOT LOAD ICON. UNRECOGNIZED FILE FORMAT.
Desktop then loads but there is no background image (other backgrounds don't work either) and the icons are question marks. All the menus and programs work normally. KDE on the other hand works normally with all visuals, so I assume there must be something wrong with GDE PNG library or something, maybe GDE corruption. If I make another user it's the same story.
I've a folder named "lynx" in my desktop . It contains ebooks - pdfs, chms etc . The problem is sometimes when i open the folder in nautilus , the folder keep loading forever and sometimes it shows two or three files and keep on loading . But at some other times , folder contents are displayed just as any other folder(i.e normal ).
I installed Drupal and there is only one site. It I access the website [url] where Drupal is installed I can easily see it functioning properly. But on internet it is not loading properly the colors etc are not visible properly.
So I have 2 ide hdds but whenever they are both connected, grub gets stuck at GRUB loading stage 1.5. how can I resolve this problem? both are Maxtors with ext4 fs. primary is 20 gb and secondary 80 gb. Jumpers are set to cable select. Boot order in bios is correct. (primary first, secondary isn't in the list at all)
Is it possible to install Gnome-panel in Xfce? I'd like to completely replace xfce-panel with gnome-panel. It is possible the other way round so maybe this way too?

I tried xfce4-XfApplet-plugin but it doesn't work the way I would like to.
I using Xubuntu 10.04 with Xfce 4.6.1 and i want to update an 4.6.2. After some hours of googling i find nothing... no way to simple update xfce official/unofficial repository for lucid not exist and basic way for update x/ubuntu from auto.
I was ******* around with wine, and when i tried to run a certain game.... The xfce panel vanished! It's simply gone! Rebooting didn't help.... And when i tried running it from a terminal i got this:Quote:
/usr/share/themes/Murrine-Sky/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:45: Murrine configuration option "scrollbar_color" is no longer supported and will be ignored. /usr/share/themes/Murrine-Sky/gtk-2.0/gtkrc:51: Murrine configuration option "hilight_ratio" will be
I have 10.04 xubuntu on an old laptop I'm using and have had a problem since the last update I ran. I use aptitude to keep my stuff up to date and ran an update this morning as normal. After the update I used it for a while longer without problems before restarting. When I logged back in my window decorations preferences had been set back to default, but the panel I have at the top of the screen was still there in it's normal state. After everything had loaded though it looked like there was a GDM session running as well, with the standard gnome top and bottom panels on the screen.
The XFCE panel still works fine, but the top GDM one will sometimes pop out over the top of it, as if autohide is enabled, it isn't though. I was somewhat confused as to how this happened so thought I would log back in again and make sure I just had an XFCE session running from the session selector. (My normal setup is to have the auto-startx disabled so that you have to login in a shell and manually startx - just a preference of mine). So I undid this comment and went to login in the GUI and select my session.
When I did my usual username and password would not grant me access, nor would my root password - very worrying. After making sure I had typed it properly I gave up and had to revert to a rescue shell to re-comment out the auto-startx. When I did this I could log back into the shell OK and startx manually as normal (for me). I don't know what updates were performed, but I'm pretty sure it's the update that triggered this behaviour, the only other thing I did was install spotify. Is there a way to track a previous update in aptitude?
