Ubuntu :: Disable Login Sounds In Maverick Without Completely Disabling Sound Theme?
Oct 12, 2010
How can I disable login sounds in maverick without completely disabling the ubuntu sound theme?I just want it to not make sounds on startuplogin but still make the ubuntu sounds when new mail is received, etc.
Upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 using standard Update Manager procedure. Now I get a sound (thump) in my speakers for almost every button click. The sound theme in System / Preferences / Sound is "No sounds". I would like to completely disable any "activity" sounds from the OS, but nothing works.
No matter how many times I press the mute button on my laptop, when I turn it on I get the drums, and when I login I get the music -- at least 2 seconds of it before the mute button will respond. This is not great for turning on the laptop in a quiet lecture hall! I googled for some solutions to this problem, and none of the suggested pathways seem to work with Maverick: System>Preferences>Sound no longer has the option to choose the login sound "System>Administration>Login Screen" has a checkbox labeled "Play login sound," but I have it unchecked and the login sound plays regardless. Is there any way to turn off the login sound in Maverick so I can turn on my computer in peace?
I am on Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit version (Gnome). I am running an NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT graphics card with the NVIDIA proprietary drivers. I have dual screens running at 1920x1080. I am dual booting with Windows 7 but I don't think that should make a difference (BURG is my bootloader). When I first boot up into Ubuntu and log in, my desktop looks just great, like this: But if I log out then log back in, my theme reverts to a grey blockish theme that seems to be reserved so weak video cards or something like that. I'm somewhat new to Ubuntu desktop. This is what it looks like:
I'm trying to figure out what in the world is going on with my sound in OpenSuSE. I put in a brand new Audigy chipset soundcard and finally got some sound to come out of the speakers. I used the guide here: SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE. to fix the permissions on my sound and am able to get sound-test to play sounds as well as connect to the sound device in my vmware and play sounds. That being said, I have terrible sound quality coming out. There is a lot of static sound like white noise and the volume of the actual sound played is very low compared to the noise. The sounds also distort somewhat.
I have tried the pulse audio change in the tutorial above also and have been searching around google. The only problem that I saw similar was a person who fixed the problem by updating KDE. I don't have KDE, I'm using Afterstep.
I have a HP laptop model HP G72 Notebook PC, Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU M 350 @2.27GHz & the Sound devices are Intel(R) Display Audio & Realtek High Definition Audio.
This machine came loaded with Windows7 & I have successfully dual booted it with Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.3.
The problem I am having is that I cannot get the sound to work at all in Ubuntu. No opening sounds or anything else that I have tried. No Web sounds, no CD sounds... All sounds work fine on the Windows side, but nothing I have tried so far seem to work with Ubuntu & I have tried many options from many threads.
How can I disable system sounds (such as dialog-question.ogg) without using GNOME? (I'm running Openbox standalone, and I therefore don't have access to the GNOME graphical config tools that require a GNOME session.)
I have a faulty touchpad on a laptop (asus 1001) and want to completely disable it (using the machine with a mouse) - how do I do it? I can see that you can disable the touchpad for a couple of seconds but I want to switch the whole thing off.
I want to disable the login sound, and System->Administration->Login Screen has an option that seems to be relevant. However, it has no effect. I know the file is at [/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/desktop-login. ogg]; would I hurt anything by moving it?I have searched Google and gconf-editor, to no avail.
I'd like to disable the log-in screen sound. Not after you log on. Since it's my laptop I can't just switch a knob or press the off button. The function keys don't work before log-in.. Well not for sound at least.. I guess you could say it's a bug.. unless it was intended. Anyway, without filling a bug report how can I disable sound @ the login screen?
when I tried to disable login sound by unchecking Play login sound under Administration > Login Screen, the login sound is not disabled, is this the correct place to disable login sound or it's a bug?
Is there a way to completely and permanently disable the startup and shutdown plymouth splashscreens. Setting nosplash in GRUB only disables the GRUB splash but not the plymouth stuff.
In Ubuntu 10.04, how do you disable the sounds that are played when the graphical login screen is shown, and after you login? There used to be a friendly System->Administration dialog to disable these, but every version seems to move everything around or simply drop useful features.
Ok so on Ubuntu 10.04 i used the Macbuntu 10.04 theme.I removed it and i found that usually when i open a program or when i click the back button in a browser or even normal buttons it makes a noise, how can i change it back to normal? I removed the macbuntu theme im even on ubuntu 10.10 now
my Maverick cannot shut down completely. I have to use Alt-SysRq+REISUB in order to shut off the laptop using the Power button. It was NOT like this when running Lucid. Also, I have installed the animated splash/boot screen (cannot remember the name of this program off-hand) and the shutdown hangs happened after this.
I do NOT have problems restarting, suspending or even hibernating.
I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my laptop -- clean HD, no other partitions.
(It's odd, though; when I go to System -> About Ubuntu, it tells me I have version 11.04 Natty Narwhal.)
Anyhow, when switching on my laptop, a short drumming sound effect can be heard when the login prompt appears on the GUI.
There are numerous threads on the Internet explaining various methods to disable this. I have done everything as instructed in these threads to no avail, including:
1) System -> Administration -> Login Screen -> Unlock -> [enter password] -> make sure "Play login sound" is unchecked (it was already) -> Close
2) System -> Preferences -> Startup Applications -> uncheck "Gnome Login Sound" -> Close
3) System -> Preferences -> Sound -> Sound Effects -> Alert volume -> check "Mute" -> Sound theme -> No sounds -> Close
It's foolproof, really. Nevertheless, when restarting the computer, the drum sound is heard again at the login prompt.
I realize I can simply find and delete the sound files, but isn't that a bit harsh? Surely there must be a more elegant way to silence the login.
For some reason, from time to time on login, as my normal theme starts to load, it changes to some sort of silver theme (a very basic one), and I am unable to change it over to any other theme. Checking the theme being used, it still says my desired one is set, but it is not. Also, no matter what theme I change it to, that basic silver theme is the one being used. This includes a default icon theme, not the one I prefer.
The only option that seems to fix things is a restart, and the hope that on this login it won't mess up like before.I am using Natty, from a fresh install, with Ubuntu Classic as my desktop, and have reinstalled things more than once to try and fix a few of the Natty-related issues, but this one keeps coming back.
I have upgraded to 11.04, but now I can't seem to disable system sounds. There used to be a window under sound preferences where you could select the sound for various events, like when you type and you hit a limit in the input field. I can't find where I can disable certain system sounds, which I find very annoying. I use Ubuntu classic.
Can't quite figure this out. My GDM is showing up with no theme whatsoever. It has a completely black background, boxy buttons, and ugly fonts. I can change it by going to tty1 and using Code: sudo -u gdm gnome-control-center
i am using opensuse 11.4 and i reinstalled it 4 days before.i have changed the cursor theme, login theme etc.after the reinstall i forgot how to change them.so please tell me how to change cursor theme, login theme, boot splash?
Just got a little pissed of with the calm, and cooling start-up music. So can anyone tell me how to change/disable the start-up sounds in Ubuntu 9.10. All the articles I've read regarding this topic is of the older versions.
I just upgraded to Maverick, and now I can't change my theme except for the cursor and window border/decoration.I've just reinstalled the themes I want to use (Dust + Dust extra) successfully, and while the window border/decorations change properly when I select them, nothing else changes. The icon set doesn't change;gnome-panel doesn't change. I'm stuck on the fugly fallback theme - the one you see when you do gksudo gedit or something.
In past versions of Ubuntu, I've used a customized version of oxygen-refit-red. This time, however, there is no apparent option to install the theme from a tar.bz2 file.
Title is simple, how do i mute sounds at login screen? Somewhere on net i found it's in Login Screen preferences. Unfortunately these prefereces are greyed out - i tried start them as root with sudo too. What now?
I installed Oxygen KDE in Firefox 4 but when I upgraded to Firefox 5 it was not compatible. The problem is that traces remain and I cannot get another theme to appear properly. I do notice that if I delete ~/.mozilla the problem is solved. However I have many addons installed and don't want to setup everything again. Also in ~/.mozilla/.../Firefox there is a folder named OxygenKDE and if I delete it, Firefox auto creates a new OxygenKDE folder on FF startup.
I have upgraded to version 11.04 and I only use Ubuntu classic - do not like Unity at all.
I think in previous version there was an option in one of the System->Preferences->Appearance dialogs to enable 3D effects partly fully or not at all for GNOME 2. However, I cannot find this dialog any more in version 11.04. Where has it gone?
I would like to make sure that all 3D mumbo-jumbo is completely disabled with ubuntu classic.

How to completely disable hibernation in Debian Squeeze (with KDE). If it's impossible to disable it for whole system, I want to hide button in KDE menu.
