Some of you might have seen my thread about Gnome 3. My desktop and windows were a mess after Gnome 3, and I couldn't restore it back to Gnome 2 for some reason. I decided to check out Ubuntu Studio because I am a guitar player. I want to be able to record, but the desktop in ubuntu studio is stunning. It isn't graphically stunning, like ubuntu running Gnome 2 or 3, but it is simple. Everything is easy to get to and no nonsense. It is a joy to use.
If they improve the looks of the desktop and menus, I would be EXTREMELY happy. The look isn't that impressive, but the ease of use is great. One thing I noticed is that the average CPU usage went down when I switched to ubuntu studio. In regular ubuntu, my CPU would be using 15%-20% of its power when I wasn't running anything. In ubuntu studio, it is between 8%-13%.
I am pretty pleased with Ubuntu Studio. I am glad I made the switch. I just would like it to be a little more visually impressive.

I performed a fresh install on my computer and everything seemed to work just fine. I then rebooted the machine and the first thing the comp asked for was a username and password in a command prompt. I entered my info and then the comp just sat there showing my username and @ubuntu (or something that i can't remember right now - I am at work). What command do i need to enter to get to the installed desktop. I actually wanted to install Ubuntu Studio but the computer i was on had an old DVD drive that was not working well and would not allow itself to be detected. Then I tried loading the ISO data on a USB but that did not fly either. I ended up using unetbootin to load the data my usb but then the install wanted to download data from the web rather than my thumbdrive. how to A) get in to my Ubuntu desktop and B)get the studio version loaded up once i have access to the desktop?

I upgraded to ubuntustudio last night while I was sleeping, and when I woke up this morning and restarted the laptop the sleek desktop environment was gone. I actually liked that layout. I can't find a way in the settings to re-enable it. en uninstalled the ubuntustudio suite and restarted the system. Nothing changed. Do I have to reinstall 11.04?I really love the new layout..as a side note, I had a small bug with it when I tried to enable the compiz effects. when I enabled the rotating cube and restarted the system the menus were gone and it was only a blank desktop

I'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?

I have Dell Studio 540 desktop and Debian Lenny installed on it:
2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Mar 9 22:29:32 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
The problem is that I can't reboot it. It just hangs after "Will now restart" message.
I've already tried: reboot=b, reboot=a, reboot=h kernel options.
Additional info (I can provide any other information):

I upgraded from Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 to Ubuntu Studio 10.04 and running a dual boot system with Windows. On the grub screen there are four listings now for Ubuntu. Two recover modes and two ubuntu modes. Is this normal? Going to reboot and see if I can get a picture of it.

After something happened in SUSE Studio, in any appliances I build the owner of /home/tux/Desktop is root which makes impossible to create desktop icons. This happens even in those appliances which previously were build normally with normal ownership (i.e. tux as owner of /home/tux/Desktop). Something changed abruptly and in all these appliances the ownership of this folder changed.

The last time I used linux (long long time ago) I had a nifty little widget the showed what was going on on all the desktops. Is there a way to add or configure this to the current gnome desktop? All I currently get is an outline to tell me if something is there, but I don't get to see what it is. Sorry for such a noob question.Running Lucid netbook on a system 76 starling. Standard Gnome login, not netbook.

I upgraded 9.10 desktop to 10.04 using network (recommended) procedure. The window close button has moved (all desktop windows) from upper right corner to upper left corner. This causes untold frustration since I flip amongst numerous computers with Windows windows and other levels of UBUNTU windows. is there some way to configure where the window close button is (some way to put it back in the upper right corner)?

Yesterday, after I first installed Slackware 13.1 I had no trouble replacing the default wallpaper with a simple gradient. Very easy. Today, (after re-formatting the drive and re-installing the entire system because I messed around with a script and it wouldn't boot) I can't change it. I spent about an hour messing around with menus and settings trying to figure out how I did it, and eventually, as a last resort, turned to the help file. It tells me to choose Configure Desktop from pop-up menu when right-click on the background.
But Configure Desktop doesn't appear in the pop-up menu. (At least, not anymore it doesn't.) The help file also says to use the Control Center, but I can't find any trace of that either. I haven't the slightest idea why these are missing. Since I re-installed everything onto a freshly re-formatted drive, anything I played around with before shouldn't have any effect on the new installation. The problem is there both when I login as root and user. I really don't want to try re-installing everything again.
The only changes I've made to the system since the re-install is to edit /etc/inittab to replace the 3 in id:3:initdefault: with a 4, so I get a graphical login, and to edit /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 to place an & at the end of the dhcpcd request which, according to the instructions I was following should put it in the background to speed up boot-time slightly. I haven't (knowingly) played around with anything that should affect KDE, except changing settings from within the KDE menus. I know it's probably going to be something very simple, and possibly obvious in retrospect, but I'm new to Linux and have no idea what I'm doing here.

I am really interested to configure my old desktop with Slackware 12 as a router. But unfortunately I did not found any other ethernet card (second) as Realtek 8029. (I need two ethernet cards according to the howto [URL]) It is possible to get up and running this card? I was googling a lot. I tried to use the ne2k-pci module. It seems that it was loaded successfully, but I cannot see my interface (eth1) with ifconfig.
lspci shows:

I would like to setup fedora for fullscreen, touchscreen, noexit application. So whenever you'll boot or restart the application will automatically starts. I thing there are these step required:
1. autologin
2. start fvwm after login instead of default DM - gnome
3. run application
how to autologin in fedora but it still shows that fedora gui login screen for 10 seconds and then it logs in. My problem that I dont know how to start fvwm and configure it to empty desktop (no toolbars no nothing) instead of gnome.

I have just noticed a nice feature in Windows 7 - when you drag a window to the edge of the screen (the mouse pointer must touch the edge), windows offers you to resize the window to exactly half of the screen size. This is actually very handy on the wide screen monitors.
Is it possible (and how) to configure Kde 4 to do the same thing?

I installed the beta version of Ubuntu 10.4, and on top of that Ubuntu Studio (for the programs it brings with it); but don't like the splash screen.
How do I disable it? (I tried uninstalling the Ubuntu studio desktop, but it did not remove the splash screen).
*Edit, following Ubuntu studio apps are still installed on my system:
Code:
ubuntustudio-default-settings ubuntustudio-screensaver
ubuntustudio-icon-theme ubuntustudio-sounds
ubuntustudio-look ubuntustudio-theme
ubuntustudio-menu ubuntustudio-wallpapers
