After something happened in SUSE Studio, in any appliances I build the owner of /home/tux/Desktop is root which makes impossible to create desktop icons. This happens even in those appliances which previously were build normally with normal ownership (i.e. tux as owner of /home/tux/Desktop). Something changed abruptly and in all these appliances the ownership of this folder changed.
View 1 RepliesWhenever I try to use a preload ISO from susestudio.com, it takes me about 5 tries to actually get it to install. I load it up in VirtualBox, and on the screen that warns "you are about to erase all data on /dev/sda, continue?", selecting "yes" will 80% of the time cause it to think you cancelled and waits 30 seconds before rebooting. Every now and then it decides to work, but sadly that's the exception and not the rule. If it makes any difference, the appliance I'm downloading is a custom one based on openSUSE 11.4 Minimal X with GNOME 3 installed on top of it.

I finished making a custom build OS of openSUSE 11.4 using suse studio but when I tried running the LIVE DVD in a laptop with an ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4250, I got a black screen. Everything from the word go seemed fine showing everything from the loading Kernel message, but the screen that is supposed to show the user accounts is surprisingly absent and only a black screen in its place.
I have only seen this problem with ATi graphics, Intel graphics work just fine. I haven't tested it on a laptop with nvidia. I'm using the default openSUSE 11.4 Kernel (Kernel-Desktop 2.6.37.6-0.5.1), Xorg-X11-driver-video-radeonhd 1.3.0_20100512_80ba041-2.1, Mesa 7.10.2-7.3.1, Xorg-X11 7.6-43.44.1. I have listed these few packages contained in the build, but I'm not sure where to look or what I may be missing.
Accidently ran rm -rf while the pwd was /home/user-name
Now I'm unable to run any command whatsoever as root, ls,vi,cnf whatever, they don't work.
However the commands work as normal user.
I can guess that the files with root ownership in the home folder were deleted but I would like to revert everything back to normal and would like to know how to solve this problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSo today I needed to switch from openSolaris to a viable OS on my workstation and decided to install openSUSE after having good experiences with it on my personal laptop. I ran into some problems partitioning one of the two hard disks installed on the system. I was limited on the amount of time I could spend at the office doing the install so I decided to use LVM on the one hard disk that seemed to work okay.
I picked LVM because although I don't know much at all about LVM, I at least know enough that it would allow me to expand the root and home partitions once I get the 2nd hard drive working correctly. So now that I've gotten the 2nd disk working okay, I've created two physical volumes on the 2nd drive, one to expand the root partition and one to expand the home partition. So, my question is, can I expand the root an home partitions while they are mounted or should I boot into a live CD environment before I expand the partitions? If I could expand them without booting into a different environment, that would be so great as I don't want to have to drive out to the office again before Monday. BTW, I am a new openSUSE user and an ex Ubuntu user. I loved the Ubuntu forums but had to switch because I do not agree with the direction that Ubuntu is taking.

After ar reboot, no more desktop. Then I did init 3 adn startx ( it seems although I have no desktop, I am in runlevel 5)

Few Days back I have installed a MTS Data Boardband Card in my Suse Linux Server 11.0 Since Then When ever I try loggin using the ROOT A/c The screen with Blue Background and the movable mouse is appearing and the desktop is not showned to me due to which i am not able to get the GUI Mode (My Desktop).
Also once I created a New user in my SUSE LINUX SERVER using that A/c I am getting the GUI Desktop but in root i am not able to get it.
It looks like there is some service which is not getting started and my Root desktop get freezed.
I was tryin to install virtualbox on Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 11 and it said it needs pad-devil. I looked in the software archive that came with sled 11 but it wasnt there. I tried downloading the VirtualBox install for Suse Linux Enterprise Server but got the same error as when i tried install VirtualBox with the opensuse 11.1 rpm file. can virtualbox even be install on sled? (has anyone done it?) and if so where can i find pam-devil?

View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I installed Ubuntu, I was asked to enter a user name and password. I chose one that would be a sort of "administrator alias" and gave it a strong password. This is my "su" name and password. That works fine for most things, such as installing software, etc.. Every so often, however, something comes up that can only be accessed by "root" and that is not me, even logged in with my "administrator alias" and password. This happened when I inserted a USB flash drive and tried to copy some files to it that I wished to transfer from my desktop my laptop. The only way I could do this was to format the flash drive. and then add my files to it.
This morning I inserted the flash drive and tried to add another file to it, using "copy" and "paste". Again I got "permission denied" and the owner of the flash drive, seen as "usb0", was again "root", and I could not change its permissions, because I am not "root". It also says the device is not listed in etc/fstab. I have read the Ubuntu paper on mounting USB drives, but I'm not sure that applies here. The drive seems to be mounted, but with the wrong owner.
This problem has also occurred with some software when I tried installing it. I usually give up and don't install it. This flash drive problem, however, is driving me crazy. I need to transfer those files. Is there something I'm missing? Despite installing and upgrading Ubuntu on 2 machines, I'm still pretty much a newbie, and if it involves using the terminal, I need step-by-step instructions,
I use a mounted NTFS filesystem as my main data storage drive. I then symlink all my Windows folders (Documents, Pictures, etc.) into my Ubuntu home folder. Works great, because it means I can share files between Windows and Ubuntu hassle-free. However, any file created on or saved to the NTFS partition automatically has its owner set as "root". Is it possible to set the default owner to me (aaron)? Or does it have to be root on NTFS?

I have not used Linux in some time (I used to use it back when suse 8 was still out and mandrake linux was still around).
Recently I decided to give it another go and downloaded both the LiveCD and the DVD (both 64-bit versions AND 32-bit versions).
I have a Dell Studio 1747 Laptop (with the 17.3 screen). It has an Intel i7 1.6GB processor, 4GB ram and an ATI Radeon 4650.
My problem is that the LiveCD just will not work. It gets to its boot menu, but when I press enter on the boot KDE live CD option, it will either try to boot and then freeze, or it will boot, you will hear that startup music, but the display will go blank. Could it be that it cannot handle my display or the graphics card on the laptop?
Unfortunately I have Windows 7, which doesn't seem to be supported by the windows installer on the DVD, so I can't test if it would work that way.
I must admit that ubuntu has given me the same grief, and so I wonder if maybe the laptop isn't yet supported properly by linux yet?
how I could use a live system or something, to at least try linux for a few things (I would need to retain windows for games and stuff). I'm not into resizing partitions and things, so I would prefer something else that could work.
I used to use the root account for everything for more than a year then I moved to a user account for security reasons but almost all files had root as owner so I could not go 5 minutes without having to change to root and then change the owner of a file to my username to make it usable. I got fed up with this so I just changed the owner of every file on the system to my username instead of root.

Everything was fine until I restarted and the login screen became non functional and I got 2 error messages related to xsession and gnome errors. I think this is because the login screen might have its own user account and it cant access the files for the login process because it is owned by myusername. So my question is what is the user-name of the login account and what folders/files need to have their owner changed so the login process can work? I'm on 10.04 lucid.
I'm trying to make my USB bootable with the OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit KDE iso image. When I open up SUSE Studio Image Writer (by following the Windows instructions here), it doesn't find the .iso image on my desktop. When I'm selecting the image, it's looking for a .raw file. Do I have to do some trickery to change the .iso image to a .raw?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAccording to a couple of different places, it's not possible for me to put a line in /etc/fstab to mount one of my partitions with owner and group not root; instead, I have to mount it in /etc/fstab, then chown & chgrp to my user. That seems ridiculously tedious and silly... is it true? I'm sure a short script could be written to get around it, but it seems obtuse for Linux not to allow that to be set in /etc/fstab.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a flash drive that I use to sync my work- and home-computers. Rsync has occasional issues syncing between FAT32 (which I use on my flash drive b/c it's universal) and EXT3.
I decided to create an EXT3 partition on the flash drive in an attempt to alleviate the rsync woes. My problem is that when I create the partition using GParted, Ubuntu auto-mounts it with Root as the owner. I had GParted check the drive, and it found no errors to repair.
One other weird thing is that the EXT3 partition shows 84.7MB being used immediately after creating the new partition.
The FAT32 partition mounts fine, is read/write, and only shows 4KB used after the new partition scheme.
I tried doing new partitions a number of times, with EXT2, EXT3, and EXT4 just to see if that mysteriously made a difference. Each time that partition would mount w/ Root as owner.
My Dell Studio 1735 laptop fails to install openSUSE 11.4 install from DVD. The installation tells me it failed to install "kernel.desktop" then grub only has a Floppy entry. When I boot to Recover System /boot has no initrd or kernels.

Installation works fine on older computer. Is it because openSuse kernel doesn't recognize the i5 Core processor yet? If this is caused by a driver, is there a way to display the kernel messages and what would be the kernel boot options to disable loading of that driver?

I have an old German laptop that currently has Win2K installed, and I would now like to replace Windows with Linux on it. The computer boots the initial CD fine and gives me a number of installation choices. If I do not add a "root=/dev/hda1" to the parameters it stops the installation with a "Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:01" and if that line is there the error message changes to 03:01.
Is this because the hard drive is already formatted to NTFS? Is there a way to delete the partition and create a new one from the Linux installation disks?
