I deleted my Ubuntu Desktop Partition to replace it with Ubuntu Studio but when I went to restart the computer and command line thing about how the Ubuntu Partition is missing is showing up. How do I get it to boot to Windows?I'm currently booting from my emergency Xubuntu USB Stick.
View 2 RepliesI'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.
[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?
I upgraded from Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 to Ubuntu Studio 10.04 and running a dual boot system with Windows. On the grub screen there are four listings now for Ubuntu. Two recover modes and two ubuntu modes. Is this normal? Going to reboot and see if I can get a picture of it.

I have some questions about installation:
1) How to partition space for Fedora? (this space is 128GB occupied by Ubuntu currently). Maybe I cannot use Gparted to partition. Will it influence windows system after partition? (because the windows loader is on /dev/sda1)
2) Do I need replace Ubuntu's grub2 bootloader with installing Fedora's grub? How to do?

I tried to install Ubuntu next to XP. After restart - no XP and no Ubuntu. Something wrong with loader I guess, I see command line prompt (of the loader I guess).
So I restarted from liveCD. But no "Repair Install" option like in XP CD. So, I deleted partition to install again on top of old, then learned a loader possibly could be fixed.
So, the problem is: testdisk cannot restore partition I deleted. I didn't write on disk anything. May be swap space after couple reloads from liveCD corrupted it?
It complains "The harddisk (...) seems to small!", it sees some other partitions and doesn't see what Gparted and Disk Utility.
Let me know the best approach to get back XP running (having Ubuntu would be good too).

Unlike during installation of XP, ubuntu doesn't offer to utilize the deleted partition. Is it going to stay empty/unallocated? Forget the empty space, will I get XP running if I continue and install?
I have ubuntu in sda7. sda6 had bt4, sda3 had Win7. From Win7 I removed sda6. Now when I start my computer I get grub rescue. How can I tell grub that ubuntu in sda6 and not in sda7 anymore or how can I create sda6 again so ubuntu goes sda7.

I was trying to remove the physical volume from an old drive. So I opened gparted and told it to rewrite the partition table. The only problem is I targeted the wrong volume, I wiped the partition table on my 4tb raid5 array This 4tb array has everything! All my movies, tv shows, music. The only things I have backup up off site are my smaller files like documents. I was about to lose my whole media collection.
I did some research and found a solution that I will post here in the hopes that someone will google "I deleted the partition table on my lvm" and be find the solution.You should find in your filesystem a /etc/lvm/backup folder. LVM puts a copy of the crucial lvm information there every time you change the the volume group.
In this folder you will find a file for each volume group. In this file you will find the uuid for all of the physical volumes that make up that group.The first step is to recreate each physical volume with their original uuids. In my case I had only 1 physical volume, which was my raid5 array. My recreation command looked like this:
pvcreate --uuid cLrY02-zrVi-D0Vi-cIPB-6fF5-ed0c-XFF0os /dev/md0
Now I have a physical volume with the same uuid it had before. It is essential that you correctly match up the uuids with the correct physical deviecs.The recreated pv is empty, the volume group needs to be recovered. This is done by using a special tool and the backup file. For me the command looked like this:
vgcfgrestore --file /etc/lvm/backup/raid5 raid5
This tells it to recreate the volume group using the information in the backup file. The backup files looks for the uuid of the PV, which now matches the correct volume. The coordinates in the backup file match up to the data on the array an suddenly everything is back!
When I deleted my LVM partition table I did not damage any of the actual volumes on the volume group, I just wiped out the table of contents. The backup file had the information needed to rewrite this table of contents.
Just updated from Lucid to Maverick UNE. (It froze at one point, so I killed it from a virtual console and used 'dpkg --configure -a' to complete the installation.) My question: Isn't the new 'unity' sidebar launcher supposed to replace the old on-screen menu? We now have both. And the old menu seems buggy: e.g. the text under some icons is displayed *vertically* (i.e. in a column just one character wide!) instead of horizontally.

View 2 Replies View RelatedSome of you might have seen my thread about Gnome 3. My desktop and windows were a mess after Gnome 3, and I couldn't restore it back to Gnome 2 for some reason. I decided to check out Ubuntu Studio because I am a guitar player. I want to be able to record, but the desktop in ubuntu studio is stunning. It isn't graphically stunning, like ubuntu running Gnome 2 or 3, but it is simple. Everything is easy to get to and no nonsense. It is a joy to use.
If they improve the looks of the desktop and menus, I would be EXTREMELY happy. The look isn't that impressive, but the ease of use is great. One thing I noticed is that the average CPU usage went down when I switched to ubuntu studio. In regular ubuntu, my CPU would be using 15%-20% of its power when I wasn't running anything. In ubuntu studio, it is between 8%-13%.
I am pretty pleased with Ubuntu Studio. I am glad I made the switch. I just would like it to be a little more visually impressive.
I performed a fresh install on my computer and everything seemed to work just fine. I then rebooted the machine and the first thing the comp asked for was a username and password in a command prompt. I entered my info and then the comp just sat there showing my username and @ubuntu (or something that i can't remember right now - I am at work). What command do i need to enter to get to the installed desktop. I actually wanted to install Ubuntu Studio but the computer i was on had an old DVD drive that was not working well and would not allow itself to be detected. Then I tried loading the ISO data on a USB but that did not fly either. I ended up using unetbootin to load the data my usb but then the install wanted to download data from the web rather than my thumbdrive. how to A) get in to my Ubuntu desktop and B)get the studio version loaded up once i have access to the desktop?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI just got a new WD Studio External USB 2.0/FW800 hard disk drive, it is formatted to HFS+ with Journaling (hfsplus) and I use it for both an iMAC and a PC/Linux. The problem is that on my PC (Linux - Ubuntu 9.10) there is always some kind of read-only error whenever I try to edit, create, delete anything on it. I tried it on my iMAC and I'm able to read and write on it with no problem.
The mount command on Linux gives me: /dev/sdc3 on /media/My Passport type hfsplus (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=devkit) Clearly indicating that it ("My Passport" on /dev/sdc3) is mounted as "rw" (read and write, not read-only). I tried connecting it via Firewire 800 and USB 2.0 and both give me the same results. I also tried fixing it in my iMAC using Disk Utility but it reports on problem and I clearly safely "Ejected" it before unplugging it from my iMAC.
i would like to replace my Ubuntu Desktop version with the Netbook version. I dont mind losing my current data on the desktop version but if there is a way for me not too i would love to know

I actually liked that layout. I can't find a way in the settings to re-enable it. en uninstalled the ubuntustudio suite and restarted the system. Nothing changed. Do I have to reinstall 11.04?I really love the new layout..as a side note, I had a small bug with it when I tried to enable the compiz effects. when I enabled the rotating cube and restarted the system the menus were gone and it was only a blank desktop

I have installed Fedora 13 and Vista 64 in Dell Studio desktop. In the Vista, the machine is quiet, but in Fedora, it is quite noisy. I checked running processes, I am not seeing anything to do with PC fan.

I currently have Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 installed and have a great setup. However, I'm trying to install another OS on the hard drive and need to remove a partition. I've read online that I can remove the Swap partition and use a "Swap file". My question is this: Is it possible to replace the Swap partition with a "swap file" without having to re-install linux?

my /dev/sdb was a truecrypt partition that was mounted when I accidentally deleted the partition in gparted (instead of sdc, stupid). I'm pretty sure I haven't overwritten anything since then, but I'm not sure how to go about recovering this one. To confound the problem, the only way I can install stuff to my ubunut machine is by downloading on a windows machine and transferring by memory stick.

I am running a dual boot with Vista and Ubuntu. When I rebooted It will only go to the Grub> prompt. Ive ran TestDisk and though that I had corrected the problem but it didnt. i recently deleted a NTFS partition while ubuntu was running and didnt disable the automount and when i tried to restart from what i can see it is trying to mount the partition which does not exist. When booting it says something to the effect of mounting dev/sda5 (which is now ubuntu) NTFS signature incorrect, what file must i change to allow ubuntu to boot because i kind of dont want to reinstall ubuntu and reconfigure it.
