how do i configure a designated monitor to be my main desktop when running dual monitors in separate x windows?i cant use twin view, as full screen issues and refresh rates are different.

View 8 Replies View RelatedPrior to upgrading to 11.04 from 10.10, I was using the Seperate X Servers option in nvidia-settings for handling my dual-monitor setup. This mode enabled both monitors to be fully independent, running their own WM and having their own virtual desktops. This was convenient for me as I could keep my web browser on one virtual desktop on one screen, and switch to other virtual desktops without losing it. However, since upgrading to 11.04, this mode no longer functions properly.
The issues I have ran into with it are various:
1: The window manager no longer starts on the second monitor.
2: Any panel applets that were present on the second monitor immediately crashed upon switching over to Ubuntu Classic from Unity, and were unable to be added back to the panel (they would just crash again as soon as they were added)
3: Any application I started on that second monitor from the menus or launcher shortcuts would start without having focus, and could not gain focus through any means (focus remained on the primary monitor, the second monitor's interface would not respond to keystrokes of any sort, mouse-clicking in windows would not give them focus either).
This has essentially completely broken the usability of my system for my work.
I need a seperate workspace on each monitor and I use nvidia propriatary graphics drivers (I have a Geforce 9500 GT Graphics Card. It has one dvi port and one vga using both for my monitors.) The only problem is whenever I try to save the settings I apply something like twinview or the seperate x workspaces with the second monitor enabled It applys it but this is what happens in sequence (It may be only twinview that does this but i'm not sure not at my home computer right now):
1.) Picture cuts out to a blank screen on main monitor
2.) Pictures turns on in the second monitor (Its a seperate workspace from the main monitor)
3.) 3 to 5 seconds later the picute cuts out to the second monitor
4.) I'm left with two blank screen monitors and no way to turn the GUI back on other than a complete restart of the computer.
I need help on both of these issues. If it helps any one monitor is a CRT (The one on the right) and the one on the left is an LCD (The LCD is the main one). I also have Ubuntu 9.10 32 bit Karmic Koala if that helps. Lastly I have the latest propriatary graphics driver from nvidia (185 I think.) I also installed the driver from nvidia via Jockey (I think thats the name of the default driver installer for ubuntu..?) That is my situation and as you can tell its a pretty complicated one.
I have a ThinkPad W520 with nVidia Quadro 1000M and Nouveau drivers. I use external monitor with extended desktop using XRandR. My beef with this setup is that I get just one virtual desktop of a (1440+1920)x1080 size whereas what I would like to have is being able to have one separate (set of) virtual desktop(s) on my 1440x1080 external monitor with, for example, some reference material open, while have other programs working on another (set of) virtual desktop(s) on my main 1920x1080 screen. I've read that this might be possible with so called zaphod mode, but it looks like it involves static rules in xorg.conf which I would like to avoid since from time to time I need to carry my laptop with me without external monitor.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a dual monitor setup. The primary one is 1360*768 and the other is 1024*768. When I fullscreen a video on the web [URL] it fullscreens to the smaller (non-primary) monitor, but cuts some off the right hand side, as if it is fullscreening the right size to display on the bigger monitor, but instead does it on the smaller one. It happens with any web video, if I click the fullscreen button on the player, it moves it fullscreen to the other monitor.

I have been trying to configure dual monitors of different resolutions on 11.4 the Nvidia configuration utility does not know where or what to save anything anymore and goes wonky. Trying to use it is a dead end for me. X11 is a mess. What happened to SAX and things like this that were part of openSUSE and just worked? Supposedly we X11 got better. I think it's got over complicated and much worse. This stuff just worked in 11.1 and KDE 3.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a problem finding the resolution that will fit my secondary monitor(24). If I check "Same image in all monitors" I can only choose resolutions that laptop can display. I don't want laptop monitor to work when I'm using secondary monitor(I close the lid)...
If I want to uncheck "Same image in all monitors"(just to find the right resolution)...the system tells me to log out and back in again. When I do that, there's the same image on both monitors and the checkbox was automatically checked again...

View 11 Replies View RelatedI've played around with a second monitor, but so far I haven't found a satisfying solution. I am using a laptop with a GeForce 9600M GS graphics card. I have managed to set up twinview, but my monitors don't have the same height so I'd rather have something like the "seperate x screen" option. Or how I imagine that option would be like. After some problems with the nvidia configuration tool (I couldn't change the xorg.conf, until I read this: [URL] I now have two separate screens, but the second one is all empty, with black background and X-shaped mouse cursor.
There seems to be no window manager running, I can start programs there with -display :0.1 , but they don't get any frame decoration and, which is worse, no keyboard focus. I'd be fine with a fullscreen konsole there, so I don't really need a window manager, but I do need access from the keyboard. I'd prefer a setup that would allow me to easily (without editing xorg.conf) switch between using both monitors and using only one, because I don't always use the laptop at home.
I upgraded from Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 to Ubuntu Studio 10.04 and running a dual boot system with Windows. On the grub screen there are four listings now for Ubuntu. Two recover modes and two ubuntu modes. Is this normal? Going to reboot and see if I can get a picture of it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI used preupgrade to upgrade from F11 to F12. In F11, I used the proprietary nVidia drivers from rpmfusion, and they worked well. I have refrained from installing the nVidia drivers in F12, because of the problems reported for users of KDE. I removed my old xorg.conf, which has references to the nVidia driver and to "TwinView," the proprietary method of managing two screens, so as to let X discover both monitors.
Now, however, my second monitor stays black, even though xrandr and KDE RandR show both monitors correctly. Xorg.0.log shows the nouveau driver is loaded. (I also tried to create a new xorg.conf following guidelines from the web, but many of the guidelines are from before xrandr, and I'm not confident I have it right yet.) It seems that X believes I have two monitors, because I can drag a window off into the blackness (and it's never heard from again!) I know that the hardware is working, because I just booted into Windows 7, and I could see the desktop on both windows.
How do I convince X and KDE to display on both monitors?
I have a really strange X (?) problem. My physical setup is:
Dell Optiplex 990
VisionTek 210 nV DMS59 PCIe video card (with a DVI splitter)
dual Dell P2411H monitors
I'm running OpenSuSE 11.4 (x86_64 fully patched) with the current nvidia drivers and kernel module. I'm running KDE and kdm in case that matters.
If I power off the two monitors, and then power them on again, the right monitor will come back on. The left monitor (which is the primary one... it's the one where the login screen appears when you are first logging in) reports that it is in power save mode. Wiggling the mouse, typing, etc., do not wake it up. The only thing that wakes it up is the detach the DVI cable from the monitor and reattach it (and sometimes it takes a couple tries).
I have used two (identical) video cards and splitters, and the problem occurred with both, so the problem doesn't appear to be with either of them. I also swapped monitors, but after the swap, the problem still occurred on the left monitor, and the old left monitor (which was now right) came on fine, so it doesn't appear to be a monitor problem.
I'm baffled. For now, I just won't turn off the monitors (or at least not the left monitor).
I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my computer. I also have Galaxy (Nvidia) 9500 GT PCI-E card installed on it. I can get both monitors (Acer X223w) to work but every time I shut off the computer and turn it back on the second monitor is shut off. I just need to turn it back on using Nvidia X Server Settings. I have tried to save my X configuratin file but I keep getting an error of:" Unable to remove old X config backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'. I have a feeling this is because I am not signed in as root. Is this correct? If this is the case is there a way to get to sign in as root not using the command lines? Otherwise they need to remove this button. I can manually create a backup (copy paste into a text file). I think. Getting back to my Xorg.conf file, I think I need to modify it to have two screens. I have also got some information on my video card using the lspci command. I think I need some information from this. I have written below (towards the bottom) what I think the file should be. Now before I do this, does anybody know of an easy way to back up my whole computer? With my luck I am about to screw something up big time. I think I can just get away with the text file that I copied from the Xorg. Worst case scenario I will just manually replace the file.

Do I need to add another Device for the video? Doesn't make sense to me since I only have one video card. I was told it should be based on the # of chips on the card. So I guess I should have two of them since I have two outputs.
I am using Fedora 15 with dual monitors. I want to make an application open automatically on the second monitor. In particular I would like to make Firefox open on the second monitor. For now I am just manually moving Firefox to the second monitor, but if I close it down and open it again, it automatically opens on the first monitor. Is there a way to make it automatically open on the second monitor?
I have two Nvidia cards in my machine. I did have one monitor connected to each video card, but I was unable to get a dual monitor set up to work like this, so I plugged both monitors into one card and the dual monitor set up works fine like. Is there a way to make dual monitors work if you have a monitor connected to each video card? When I had a monitor connected to each video card, I could see the second monitor in the Nvidia settings, but it always disabled it. I could enable it, but it would grey out twin view. After I enabled it, I'll restart the X server, the second monitor would auto disable again.
I'm using Gnome, I don't have the above issue in Xfce4 - it works fine with one monitor connected to each card in Xfce4. However, I want to use Gnome. I've searched, but have not been able to find a solution to either of these issues. I read you can fix the application to launch in a second monitor with wmctrl. I've tried to install it with yum, but I get the message: No package wmctrl available.
I am using Mandriva 2010.1 and KDE4. The primary monitor is VGA-0, and sometimes it's desired to play a video on the big monitor which is HDMI-0. I use an xrandr command line which works nicely except that the KDE4 task bar and desktop icons move over to HDMI-0. How can I keep the task bar and desktop icons on VGA-0 when both monitors are enabled?

I'm using dual-screen output with KDE 4.4 on my laptop. Is it possible to have the KDE panel on the external monitor if attached and back on the laptop's LCD panel as soon as the monitor is disconnected?
It seems that Plasma prefers the built-in LCD even if an external monitor is connected. I tried various settings with xrandr and also in the System Settings but none of them helped. The only way to move the KDE panel to the external screen is to disable the built-in LCD.
What I would basically like to do is to use the external monitor as primary in the office and the laptop LCD next to it as a second screen. When I'm traveling I'd like to use only the laptop LCD.
Is there also a nice way to switch between the screens? On the Internet I found a script for the "screen switch" key for IBM Thinkpad and modified it to work on my Dell. But it would be nice to have this also automatic: autodetect the monitor attachment/removal and perform a configured action. The KRandr doesn't seem to have such a feature. Is there anything I could use?

I recently did a clean install to upgrade to 10.10 and I also got a 2nd monitor recently after upgrading. I want to be able to connect remotely to my desktop like I used to from my phone, but when I connect I get a black screen the size of my full desktop(both monitors) and I can move the mouse/type.

I cannot get desktop effects running at Normal or Extra, when I try to enable either one I get the following message "The Composite extension is not available". I want to set up my PC so that I have Windows 7 installed on one hard drive and Ubuntu Studio installed on a completely separate hard drive. I currently have both hard drives installed in my PC and the larger one (640GB) has Windows 7 installed and is currently taking up that entire drive. My other hard drive (160GB) has a wubi install of Ubuntu 10.10 on it so it shows up on the Windows boot menu. What I want to do is wipe the smaller hard drive and install Ubuntu Studio on it and have it show up in the boot menu just like my wubi install does.
I need to know things like:
1. When I install Ubuntu Studio, do I install the boot loader to the MBR of the hard drive I'm installing it on?
2. How exactly do I add Ubuntu Studio to the Windows boot loader?
With a dual-monitor setup, how can I control which monitor gets which id number?
My primary monitor is a 24-incher. Recently I picked up a little 10" flat panel for a project. The dual-monitor setup is mostly working fine, in that I can move windows between the two monitors, change the alignment in Monitor preferences, set resolutions, etc. Unfortunately the little monitor is getting assigned Monitor 0 and the 24" is getting Monitor 1, so the panels are showing up in the wrong place.
I can work around by going into gconf-editor and telling the panels to use Monitor 1, but I'd like a better fix. Changing monitor assignments seems the obvious right way to go, but I could be wrong.
Setup:
- Ubuntu 10.10
- Core i3-550 using on-chip graphics
- Intel DH55HC with VGA/D-sub, DVI, HDMI
- No-name 10" flat panel connected to VGA/D-sub (has VGA only)
- Acer 24" flat panel connected on DVI (has VGA and HDMI ports too)
My SWAG is that the system is simply assigning Monitor 0 to the VGA port. The 10" is VGA/D-sub only, so I can't physically swap them to test this (FWIW I did move the 24" to HDMI and the results were the same).
I finally have decided to give ubuntu a shot.Windows is becoming too familiar, and it's been forever since I have used command line since DOS.I really need some humility, and I think that Linux will teach me some.I am going to give it a whirl on a "spare" machine, dual booting with Windows 7 64 on two separate hard drives. I'm burning the ubuntu live cd x86 right now. I am going to unplug my windows drive and start the installation.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have tried (a few times now lol) to get this setup. I am using Windows 7 64-bit and Ubuntu 10.4 64-bit. I have Windows 7 installed on one hdd, another hdd has the System Reserved partition along with a data partition for files, the third hdd is the one where I want to install Ubuntu. I have found numerous tutorials on installing them both on the same drive, but not on separate ones. The couple I have found haven't really worked.
I think that Ubuntu is installed correctly but there is no option to boot into it. Windows 7 just happily loads itself. I have tried reinstalling and selecting 'sdc1' (the native ubuntu partition) as the location for the bootloader to be installed and then used Easy BCD to add that location to the windows bootloader which gives the option to load Ubuntu but when selected dies complaining that there is a missing file (I think it just can't find the Ubuntu bootloader).
As an aside when I get to the installation screen the Ubuntu installer keeps on telling me that there are no operating systems detected on the machine (Even though I'm pretty sure the drive it is talking about 'sda' is where Windows 7 is installed). Not sure if that matters just seemed a little wierd.
I would like to have 1 hard drive operate with Ubuntu 10.04 and another with Windows 7 Pro, with a proper boot selection menu when I boot up my computer.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been messing around with the ubuntu family for some time now, and usually have no problem finding my answers. This one, however, is giving me some trouble. I have been using ubuntu on my laptop for some time now, and recently got a new 2TB hard drive for my desktop. I cloned the old hard drive to the new one, and decided to install ubuntu onto a third drive. The third drive was IDE, the new one is SATA. I disconnected the other hard drive, and so my current set up is a SATA drive with Windows 7, and an IDE drive with Ubuntu (11.04 of course)
Well, I am unable to dual boot between the two, unfortunately, and would like to figure out how. I would like to say the problem is with Windows, since that is the primary drive. No GRUB shows up upon booting when both drives are plugged in, and the Windows Bootloader does not show my installation of Ubuntu, instead it goes right to Windows.
I am trying to configure my video card (ATI Radeon X1300) to use two monitors. Now i can see in both the same duplicate screen.

VMware Player was extremely slow, so I gave up. I'm not sure it supports dual monitors, anyway. Can anyone recommend a product for what I want to do?
View 1 Replies View RelatedWe were trying to install w7 on a reserved partition. W7 did not like the partition (whatever we tried).
Since we had 3 hard-drives, on the allocated drive we deleted all partitions and set the partition table type new to MSDOS (yast etc.....).
W7 installed fine. We did not time it, but it appeared that 11.3 installs faster plus considering 11.3 installs quite a number of applications.
There are plenty of postings re integrating W7 to the Grub-menu.
This system went through several Suse updates, hardware upgrades, basically was all over the place.... we did a "new" install of 11.3 allocating its own hard-drive.
Install......fine, and Grub entered W7 to the menu. Worked ! Mounted the windows partition to /home/yourusername/windows
So, if you really (?) need W7 and have a spare hard-drive, this maybe is a clean solution.
