Ubuntu / Apple :: Studio On A Mac - Intel

Mar 30, 2010

Has anyone tried running ubuntu studio on a mac? (intel mactbook pro 5,3) I assume the installation would be essentially the same as installation for standard ubuntu release on mactel? Is there anything specific relating to audio drivers (video too) etc that I should know?

Debian :: Compiling TAUCS For Squeeze Using Intel Studio C And Fortran Compilers

Feb 19, 2011

I want to build Taucs library [URL] , to use its sparse solver in some number crunching apps, [URL] Since i plan to build these apps with the intel development suite, i better build Taucs with the same set of compilers... but AFAIK Taucs doesnt exist in <testing> or <unstable> ( I could apt-get source, and set appropriate flags for compilers it it did ) and i do not quite understand its build system ..It is not a ./configure system...it relies on external libs like blas, lapack and metis... which regardless of existing in Debian repo are built with gcc-4.5... so.. no way of using this to link with an Intel built library...

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade Studio Lucid Directly To Studio Maverick?

Jan 9, 2011

I'm currently using Ubuntu Studio Lucid and would like to use Ubuntu Studio Maverick, but I'm unsure how to go about the upgrade. Should I upgrade to generic ubuntu maverick then upgrade to ubuntu studio? Or install ubuntu studio maverick from a DVD?? Or something else?? I should say that I have a separate /home partition.

[Edited because what I first wrote was confusing:] when I started the process of upgrading with Update Manager it said that quite a lot of things would be removed (it would be upgrading only to generic Ubuntu for one thing)---I aborted that by the way. I was wondering if anybody knew of a way to avoid having to first sort of note everything that I have installed, then do the upgrade to generic Ubuntu, then do an upgrade to Ubuntu Studio, then reinstall all of the apps in their newer versions. Might there be a way to upgrade the OS itself first and then just directly update the apps without having to reinstall them, figuring out what to install all over again too?

Hardware :: Install Ubuntu Alone On Apple IMac - Intel

Aug 10, 2010

Yesterday I've try to reinstall ubuntu on my iMac at the only difference is that I don't want to see mac OS any more as I never use it.

So I erase all partitions of the hard drive (including the EFI one)

set the HD as GPT and use the following partitions schema:

Then I install ubuntu 10.4 TLS. every thing went well up to the end where is told me installation successful and ask to restart.

But when I restart it give me this: e745...(cut)...0a2 end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector

I know that my iMac doesn't use a BIOS but an open firmware and I didn't create any EFI partition.

should I create one? do I have to modify something in the Open Firmware? and it it possible to install Linux ALONE on an iMac (intel)? as I don't want macOs on it nor rEFIt as possible.

Ubuntu / Apple :: 20" 2009 Intel IMac Won't Boot LiveCD?

Mar 26, 2010

in an attempt to demonstrate just how compatible our college Macs are (please hold the tomatoes) I'm trying to install Ubuntu Karmic alongside Mac OS X Leopard and Windows XP Pro SP2. The problem is, I hold down 'C' to boot from the CD, and all I get is a black screen with a flashing DOS-style cursor. If I boot it without holding C, it works just fine, booting into either Mac or Windows (whichever I specified). This is understandably irritating, and I'm trying to figure out the source of the problem.

Ubuntu / Apple :: Keyboar And Mouse Not Working After Install On Intel Imac?

Jul 21, 2010

After booting up from the cd, I noticed that neither my wireless keyboard or wireless mouse were working. after a while a different screen came up that allowed me to use my keyboard arrows to choose "try ubuntu without affecting your system". So I choose that option and got to the desk top but then i had no use of the mouse or the keyboard at all. I then ejected the disc by quickly pushing the power button in the back of the iMAC and once the disk was out was able to restart the computer. Now i am in a black screen that says that there is no bootable drive.I know about the option key at start up, but that is apparently not working because my keyboard is not being recognized

Ubuntu / Apple :: Screen Brightness On Aluminum 24 Inch Intel IMac

Sep 1, 2010

Screen brightness on aluminium 24 inch Intel iMac

I was just about to re-install Ubuntu to dual boot with OS X on my 24 inch aluminium Intel iMac. Then I remembered the reason I got rid of Ubuntu the last time... screen brightness.

It is a known fault of these machines - the default brightness is set far too high. Sometimes it hurts the eyes. There is an application I have to use with OS X called 'shades'.

If I instal Ubuntu in VirtualBox I can still use 'shades', but when I run it natively as a dual-boot os, I do not have access to the 'shades' app so the screen is far too bright to use for any reasonable length of time.

Is there a workaround for this, without having to do something on every log-in?

(I am using the 64 bit AMD version of Ubuntu.)

Ubuntu / Apple :: 10.10 On Macbook Pro 15" 1,1 - Intel - Laptop Overheats Until Shut Down - Freeze Every Time

Apr 5, 2011

I purchased a macbook (for cheap) without a hard drive and decided to go with Ubuntu 10.10 on my new drive.

This laptop has serious overheating issues. I installed the sensor applet and the fans are not coming on, even when the core temp exceeds 167(f). The base of the laptop becomes hot enough to fry an egg on.

I'd like to find a way to make the fans come on in an automated fashion (without having to do it at the command line each time I want them to come on). I'd even be happy with them on all the time if that will resolve the issue, as the laptop overheats until shut down / freeze every time I use it.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.3 On Intel Core I5 With Integrated Graphics + Intel H55 Express Chipset

Aug 18, 2010

! I'm thinking of buying a corei5-660 on a motherboard with an Intel H55 Express Chipset. Does anyone know if it's fully compatible with OpenSUSE 11.3? I mean video (that comes from the processor, not an off-board PCI), audio (HD Audio), networking (Intel 82578DC Gigabit), SATA Controller, USB, etc. I've tried to google but didn't find much info so I wonder if anyone is using or knows where I can find more info about it...

I have found this thread on the forums about the H55 chipset: Core i3 Intel Clarkdale graphic controller problem But the problems were facing on 11.2, I don't know about 11.3...

Jan 2, 2011

I've installed Suse linux 11.3 (kernel 2.6.34.7-0.5) on my brand new computer HP all in one 5130. Everything worked incredibly well : Wifi, wireless keyboard and mouse, sound, webcam.. The graphic card is an intel chipset (HD graphics) integrated to an intel core i3 CPU. Here is (part of) the X11.org log :

Ubuntu / Apple :: Auto-load Apple Wireless Keyboard?

Apr 22, 2010

This morning I bought an Apple wireless keyboard and I got it connected through Blueman. It works like a charm, but I have on problem;

When I log out I can log back in by typing in my password. However, when I restart the computer it seems that bluetooth is not loaded yet and I cannot enter my password. So I have to log in using my wired keyboard, and then disconnect & re-connect to my wireless keyboard using blueman before I am able to use the wireless keyboard.

Is there any way that I can already auto-load bluetooth and connect to my keyboard before I log in?

Fedora :: Use 12 Instead Of Ubuntu Studio For Music Production?

Apr 14, 2010

well I switched from windows several years ago and never looked back. I wanted to use fedora (and I did for a while) but ended up using ubuntu studio (actually ubuntu with selected studio components) and to be fair it has worked out well. the thing is I am looking to keep my server skills up to date and I know at this time redhat is king and fedora has most of the stuff I need to keep current (files in same places, yum/rmp vs apt-get) for that elusive linux job I am looking for. but I need a real time kernel, jack, ardour, hydrogen and other assorted open source packages because, well because that is my interest. so...

1) Are these packages available in fedora via yum (I don't want to maintain tar packages)

2) Is there a real time kernel as well from yum?

3) kvm/qemu virtual machines did not work with the rt kernel on ubuntu 9.04 but DID in fact work on ubuntu 9.10. Has anyone used the rt kernel and run kvm/qemu on fedora? cause if I cant have a few vm's (opensolaris, centos and xp to be exact) I cannot come back.

ubuntu is nice but after a year I still keep starting to type yum install vs apt-get so I guess fedora never really left me... oh I should mention my computer is 64 bit...
