Command to switch to a different hard drive. I have multiple hard drives in my computer. One called storage and the other one called filesystem. I would like to know how can i access the Storage hard drive via the terminal.
View 6 RepliesI Have been "dual" booting two O/S's independently on two hard drives, and it has worked perfectly although a bit of a chore having to go into BIOS to select the other drive if I wanted to swap. I do it this way as it stops all the headaches with the MBR or GRUB, and doing updates and re-installs are completely clean and hassle free(what % can claim this in a regular multi-boot?) I have at last found a power switch to make the whole process even easier, its a simple 3 pole switch that slots into the front panel,searched the net for weeks as I knew they existed but only in the USA or Taiwan, managed to track one done in France,I thought I would share this information as I think it gives a simple solution to a what can be a very complex and frustrating problem![URL]...

I have purchased a 1tb external usb hard drive, which came with its own power supply, and the HD device is connected to the power mains 24/7.
However, there is no on/off switch on the actual device, and I dont want to have it permantly connected to my computer, perhaps only for an hour or so everyday.
Could I harm the usb HD by regularly pullling its usb cable from the computer usb port? (ofcourse I would unmount it first).
I'm a Linux college course student and can't et help from my "instructor". As part of my class, I've installed Fedora 12 on a secondary hard drive. I don't know the first thing about Linux and am totally lost trying to get back to my other hard drive to access the Windows XP OS. All my stuff for the courses I'm taking this summer are stored THERE. Can anyone help me with very simple, easy to follow instructions for how to get back to Windows AND also have access to Linus on the secondary drive?

Ubuntu is getting stuck at the loading screen after an aborted attempt to upgrade to 11.04. It's my own fault - the install was running out of room on /, and I, like an idiot, decided to delete some package files under /var/something/archive, thinking they were "old"... I quickly realized they were in fact the new packages being installed... anyway after killing the thing and rebooting it is pretty damn broken (mostly because I can't get networking going so running in dpkg repair mode doesn't do much because, well, I deleted the packages).
I want to copy all the files off my /home and other meaningful partitions onto an external drive so I can just do a clean install. View 2 Replies View RelatedI normally use the "locate" command to find files that I have on my local drive. However, if I wanted to do this for an external drive, how would I go about this?
From what little I know about Linux, I'm guessing that it creates a reference file from which it performs the search when the command is typed. If I'm right this is updated at a given interval or when "updatedb" is used?
As the external hard drive is not always mounted is it best to create another of these reference files and have a different command (e.g. locateext) or something? Or is it best to add the external hard drive's location to the list of files that get added with updatedb.

I've been dual-booting win7 and ubuntu on my comp for a while, but didn't bother updating grub. I just updated to grub 2, but it wouldn't let me boot and said my hard drive was missing, also giving me a grub safety command line.
View 3 Replies View RelatedA section of the hard drive on my laptop is damaged but the laptop has genearlly been running fine as it seems to very rarely touch that section (once every few months). However, when installing some updates the computer has hit that section which means it becomes unresponsive and makes a nasty clunking sound every 10s or so. Because of this I've had to abort the update but now whenever I try to run 'dpkg --configure -a' to sort out the problem caused by the interrupted update I get the same freezing up and clunking. The message that appears when I run the command is adding extension /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.0/program/mailmerge.py... and then it freezes.

It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.
Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just booted one of my computers from a usb drive I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to, and when I booted it up on that computer, it worked fine. Then, when I powered down the computer and booted it back up to the main hard drive, it booted to the same that my flash drive was running, but my flash drive was not plugged in!! How is this possible? Did it copy itself over my other operating system? There is no trace of it. By the way, that, too, was ubuntu 10.04.

I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. I am trying to move a whole bunch of files from one partition on one hard drive to the same partition on another hard drive. Can I mount the same partition (same name, different drives, i.e. /data on /dev/hda1 and /data on /dev/hdb1)and copy those files? Shutdown the server, take out /dev/hda1 and boot up with the new drive and it's /data contents.
