Jan 8, 2010When at the console, what is the command (if there is one) to determine memory usage (used/free) on the hard drive that is being used for one's OS?

View 2 Repliesi am having a problem that i would call a bit "important" with my server. so, from last 3 weeks the used space of my hard disk (RAID I) started growing up. i have 2 x 1 tb HDD working on RAID I and i did not install anything those weeks. the space just started changing from 90 GB till 580 GB. now the situation is stable there but i think it's not normal.
the bandwidth usage is low (like 120 gb in 2 months) and i am running 6 counter strike gameservers, a forum, a very little website and some local stuffs... a friend of mine told me that my server could have been hacked but i am afraid it did... some useful informations: when i reboot the server the used space goes down again to ~100 GB and then it starts going up again. i cant really find where all those files are located:

View 2 Replies View RelatedHow would one determine the capacity in sectors or LBAs of a USB Hard Drive? If I know the USB device number, like from 'lsusb', is there someplace on the system to get other information about the drive? What I want to do is have a program go out and get this information just for the number of LBAs on the drive itself. Partition info doesn't matter for what I am doing.

It will probably be a 1.0 TB drive from Frys/CompUSA/MicroCenter or some discount source. It will probably come formatted to run on a Windows machine and I intend this drive to be run only from my Linux laptop. I'd like to format it to be able to make the most of it from my Linux machine. Although re-formatting may not be absolutely necessary, as it probably will work "OK" just out of the box as is, how can I format it to get the maximum usage out of this new drive?

At the moment, top shows all the RAM is taken, (NOT by cache), but the RAM used by the various processes is very far from 16GB.I have seen this problem several times, but I don't understand what is happening. My only remedy so far has been to reboot the machine.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've come across a really strange issue with one of my RHEL servers. The "free" command shows that 7019 MB of memory are actually in use by my system, but when summing up the actual usage (or even virtual usage like the example below) it doesn't add up - the sum is far less than what is reported by "free":
Code:
[root@server1 ~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 12011 7946 4065 0 4 23
-/+ buffers/cache: 7919 4092

On one of my servers the "free" command tells me that a lot of swap space are in use. What I'd like to do is to determine which processes have been swapped out. I tried issuing "top" and sort by the "swap" column, but this doesn't seem to provide correct values - when performing the same excersize on another server with close to no pages swapped out, the sum when adding the swap value for each process greatly exceeds the swap usage reported by "free". So how do I go about determining the swap space used for individual processes?

It's my own fault - the install was running out of room on /, and I, like an idiot, decided to delete some package files under /var/something/archive, thinking they were "old"... I quickly realized they were in fact the new packages being installed... anyway after killing the thing and rebooting it is pretty damn broken (mostly because I can't get networking going so running in dpkg repair mode doesn't do much because, well, I deleted the packages).
I want to copy all the files off my /home and other meaningful partitions onto an external drive so I can just do a clean install. What would be the best way to determine memory consumed by each application running on the server?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been having some problems with Lucid; all my applications seem to be hogging memory like no tomorrow. Within about 15 minutes from booting the system, processes like Google Chrome, Nautilus, Python, Pidgin all start to take seemingly too large amounts of memory.
Chrome is the worst one, easily shooting over 200-300MB of my 2GB's of RAM. I would have reported this as a bug in Chrome itself, but my other applications seem to share the problem to some extent. Also: My colleague has identical hardware and identical versions of Ubuntu / Chrome, while he has no memory problems whatsoever.Currently I am running Chrome, Geany, Pidgin, Thunderbird and FileZilla. For this and itself, Ubuntu now consumes 1.8GB of RAM (that's including 500MB cached).
If i download something using KTorrent or Transmission, my RAM Memory ( 2G GB ) is filling up and my PC dies slowly.
Only with saidar i can see this, if i use System Monitor, things look normal.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 and i'm also having this problem when i'm watching movies.
I normally use the "locate" command to find files that I have on my local drive. However, if I wanted to do this for an external drive, how would I go about this?
From what little I know about Linux, I'm guessing that it creates a reference file from which it performs the search when the command is typed. If I'm right this is updated at a given interval or when "updatedb" is used?
As the external hard drive is not always mounted is it best to create another of these reference files and have a different command (e.g. locateext) or something? Or is it best to add the external hard drive's location to the list of files that get added with updatedb.
I'm running Fedora 11.

We have an ORACLE instance that is using shared memory but this is ceilinged at 45Gb. That means there is about 15Gb unnaccounted for . What utilities can I use on red hat to ascertain memory usage other than 'top' ? Any better ones, more detailed, looking at shared memory etc and swap ?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to understand the performance of my machine and memory usage just isn't adding up. When I run top it will typically show 301M of 308M used but the total of everything in the RES column is no where near 300M and the total of %MEM column isn't more than 20-30%. So how do I figure out what is using all the memory? Then is there some way to control it to optimize performance?
