Software :: Hard Drive Missing - Giving Grub Safety Command Line

Feb 5, 2011

I've been dual-booting win7 and ubuntu on my comp for a while, but didn't bother updating grub. I just updated to grub 2, but it wouldn't let me boot and said my hard drive was missing, also giving me a grub safety command line.

Ubuntu :: Transferring Hard Drive To A New Computer / GRUB Giving An Error Message?

Nov 16, 2010

Today, I finished assembling my dream computer. I can boot it into the BIOS, and I checked that everything was working correctly through there. Anyway, I attempted to transfer the hard drive from this computer to that one. This computer is a Dell (blech) Optiplex GX280 with an Intel processor and integrated graphics. The new one has an AMD Phenom II processor with an ATI card and an ASRock motherboard (drastically different machines, I know...) When I try to boot, GRUB gives me an error message that says something like:

Code:
blah whatever cannot find /dev/disk/by-uuid/372de761-9577-48be-ba19-c6b2890cb229
Did I do something wrong installing the hard drive? Or is this a problem that is going to happen no matter how hard I try to make it not happen? If the second is true, will it help if I wipe the disk and reinstall Ubuntu on the new computer?

P.S. I know similar threads about transferring hard disks have been posted, but no thread has mentioned this error.

Ubuntu :: Copy A Hard Drive From Command Line?

May 4, 2011

Ubuntu is getting stuck at the loading screen after an aborted attempt to upgrade to 11.04. It's my own fault - the install was running out of room on /, and I, like an idiot, decided to delete some package files under /var/something/archive, thinking they were "old"... I quickly realized they were in fact the new packages being installed... anyway after killing the thing and rebooting it is pretty damn broken (mostly because I can't get networking going so running in dpkg repair mode doesn't do much because, well, I deleted the packages).

I want to copy all the files off my /home and other meaningful partitions onto an external drive so I can just do a clean install. I can actually login to the command line under recovery mode, but I can't get the GUI started. I know it's possible to copy the contents of the partitions to an external

Ubuntu :: Mounting A Hard Drive With Options On Command-line?

Sep 3, 2010

I have a working fstab entry:

Quote:

But how do I mount the sdc drive with those options from the command-line without restarting? I've tried to do so with 'mount' utility, but had no luck.

Hardware :: Dropped Hard Drive - Started Giving Out An Intermittent Clearly Audible Rattle

Jun 23, 2009

I bought a new hard drive recently and I managed to drop it. Put it into the computer, used it for a day, all went fine. Now today, it has started giving out an intermittent, clearly audible rattle that will last for a few seconds at most; there doesn't appear to be much of a pattern to it, sometimes the drive keeps quiet for an hour, then it does it twice within a minute or five. FWIW, the drive was still in its plastic box when it hit the floor so that must have softened the blow. There is no visible damage to the drive although the plastic box was dented on one corner. Still, what do you reckon are the odds that it will die any time soon?

Fedora :: GRUB :: Menu.lst :: GRUB Starts In Command Line?

Dec 1, 2010

Code:

grub-install -v
grub-install (GNU GRUB 0.97)

I loaded GRUB, and now when I reboot it goes straight into the 'grub>' command line. Initially GRUB had the root as (hd0,2), whereas the boot is on (hd0,1)...(hd0,2) is my '/home' partition, and (hd0,1) is my '/' partition... So on a bootup I ran...

Code:

root (hd0,1)
setup (hd0)

Now when I boot I still get the 'grub>' command line, but now the root is correct.

From 'grub>' I can type...

Code:

grub> configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst

GRUB will then show the menu, and I can click the listings to load them. All's fine, but why doesn't GRUB just load the menu.lst without my prompting? How can I automate this process of typing 'configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst' each time I boot?

Ubuntu :: 10.4 Hard Drive Missing ?

May 25, 2010

I'm having trouble locating my second hard disk on my fresh Ubuntu 10.4 install.

It's a terabyte drive that I cannot seem to find in Ubuntu. It's formatted in NTFS and is over 90% full of data.

If I boot into Windows 7 the drive appears fine and the data is all there and Windows disk scan doesn't report any problems.

The drive: WDC WD10EADS-00L5B1 ATA Device (as listed on Windows 7)
Disk 1 (According to Windows 7)

Here is my fstab, fdisk and uname:

As you can see from the above, my other drive is detected fine (the one with the Windows installation and Ubuntu installation on it)

On a side not, I don't have a floppy drive installed, so I'm not sure why fd0 is listed (perhaps it's irrelevant - I'm new to the Linux world so I wouldn't know)

Ubuntu Installation :: Missing Hard Drive During Setup?

Jan 28, 2010

I've managed to get a hold of a 160GB drive, which I hope to use as my system drive for a server that I'm setting up. This may be the tip of the iceberg (as it tends to be with me for some reason), but this is what's happening:

I got the drive, which has been used before but has been secure erased, and it's been sea tool-ed so is therefore as good as new. It shows up fine in the BIOS, and GParted discovers it straight away. I then split it into 3 partitions:

A ~10GB system partition - sdd1
A ~130GB storage partition - sdd2
A ~4GB swap partition - sdd3

GParted performs all actions straight away with no issues.

After partitioning, fdisk -l reports the following:

Code:
Disk /dev/sda: 500.1 GB, 500107862016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 60801 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x2bd2c32a

[Code]....

I've then gone to install Ubuntu. I go through all the major steps, up to where it asks you where you want to install Ubuntu... at which point sdd just doesn't show up at all. It shows sda, sdb and sdc fine, but sdd is nowhere to be seen.

Two things strike me as odd (although I suppose understandable) - Firstly, every partition in sdd mounts fine, but is owned by root. Secondly, each partition has a folder called 'lost+found' with varying amounts of data. There's 662.3MB in the 10GB partition's lost+found folder, and 6.9GB in the 130GB's folder.

Ubuntu :: Files Missing On External Hard Drive

I just downloaded some movies, and copied it to this external hard drive. And here's the strange part, after I did this I only see a very small subset of all the movies I stored on that harddrive in nautilus. With 500 GB almost full, you can imagine there are quite some movies on it, but I only see 12 of them in nautilus.

Fedora :: How To Access The Grub Or Command Line

Dec 18, 2009

with that said i burned fedora 8, 10, and 11 checked the sha1 verified everything was fine i had originally installed fedora 8 on an old pc i had from windows XP without any problems messed with it some, upgraded to 10 again no problems. tired to update 11 got a message about ext3 not found ext4 not found, re installed 10 the loader loads up now i have a blank screen with a cursor it the left hand corner

again i had 10 installed fine prior to all this can any one point me in the right direction to solve this issue or am i way over my head trying to figure this stuff out. i have spent 3 days searching these forums.

i'm just not quite sure what i need to do. oh, i tried to install 8 again and it wouldn't take either. i think the 10 problem has something to do with the graphic driver it's a geforce 7400 nvidia and something to do with the grub, but like i said i get a blinking cursor and not quite sure how to access the grub or command line.

Ubuntu :: Boots To Grub Command-line No GUI

Jan 20, 2010

I used the Wubi installer to install the latest version (available from the website) on my second physical HDD. I rebooted my machine and used the Windows 7 bootloader to launch Ubuntu and it launched a GUI install. I wasn't sure how long it was going to take, so I left for about a half hour and when I returned I was back to my Windows 7 logon screen. Naturally, I assumed the install was a success and I rebooted my machine. When I boot again I get the Windows bootloader and I see my options for Windows 7 (which works properly) or Ubuntu. However, if I select Ubuntu I am brought to a command-line and there is an output at the top of the screen stating "Grub bootloader." At this point do I need to type anything to launch the GUI (I'm assuming Gnome) from this? How should I proceed from this point, reinstall?

Ubuntu :: System Boots Into Grub 2 Command Line?

Mar 4, 2011

After installing the 10.10 Maverick Meerkat, I decided to have a new partition and install Windows 7 on it for development purposes. So this is the method I worked with:

Partitioned the hard disk with gparted
Formatted the drive in NTFS
Installed Windows

Booted into Ubuntu 10.10 Live CD and re-installed grub on the MBR Now after restarting the system a grub command line boots up. I was able to boot into ubuntu with the following commands:

Code:

find /vmlinuz
kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1 (or its equivalent)
initrd /initrd
boot

Is there any way how to load up the grub GUI with the options to boot up Ubuntu or Windows 7 respectively?
