For some reason I cant get the syntax to switch to a directory in my external harddrive. I know I've done it before but now I can't get it to work. Here is what I've done.
cd /home/media/My Book/folder Where MyBook is the name of the hard drive.
I'm trying to setup my media streaming server, and everytying is going quite well, but there's one thing I don't understand. Can you have ubuntu automatically pick up and mount your external USB drive when you switch it on? I don't like leaving the hard drive running, and I only need to have it on when I want to stream something, but it seems to lose the mount when I switch it off and on again. Anyway to make it automatically detect that it's on and mount it back onto my mount point?

View 6 Replies View RelatedAs I regularly move between Mac and PC, I thought it would be a good idea to put all my data on an external drive. As Windows 7 and OS X have similar home folder layouts, I just simply put all the folders I need for both on the root of the external drive and changed a few settings so that the Home folder for my user is on the external drive on both Windows and OS X.
Whilst Ubuntu also has a similar structure, I cannot work out how to have it so that my users home folder is on the external drive. I have done a little research and all I can find is how to have the /home directory on another partition. a) this is not what I'm trying to do, just the folder for my user and b) this would mean formatting the external drive to extX format, which just wouldn't work for me.
I am using 9.10 (or will be once the upgrade is complete)
i want to move a directory to an external hard drive this is what i did

From what little I know about Linux, I'm guessing that it creates a reference file from which it performs the search when the command is typed. If I'm right this is updated at a given interval or when "updatedb" is used?
As the external hard drive is not always mounted is it best to create another of these reference files and have a different command (e.g. locateext) or something? Or is it best to add the external hard drive's location to the list of files that get added with updatedb.

I am using an external Hard drive of 250G in ext2 file system as my device for large data read, write & execute file system. I have already mounted the device from /etc/fstab. But i want my application to access this device as a Primary data storage device OR Secondary storage device. What command will i invoke to partition this 250G drive as my primary or secondary storage device.

View 2 Replies View Relatedi've been using xubuntu for a few days now and i am encountering this irritating problem! i am able to connect other thumb drives and other flash drives to my laptop and they run fine on xubuntu but when i try to connect my 80 gigs external hard drive, it displays the following error message and shows nothing but an empty window of the hard drive with no contents of it :
ERROR:
"Failed to open directory "This IS RJ's". Error stating file '/media/This IS RJ's/xubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso': Input/output error."
where "this is RJ's" is my hard drives label and the "xubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386.iso" is a file i believe inside the drive. ( is it causing the problem?) this external hard disk is working fine on windows xp. but what is the problem on xubuntu?

And when I plug it in I can choose: the standard ubuntu kernel is the one on my external, and the original one is listed under other...

My laptops screen has recently gained an annoying blue tint, which i do not have the expertise (or money to pay somebody) to fix, so i am using my TV as an external monitor. So what i am proposing to do is purely use the External and leave the laptop monitor off. I am dual-booting Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04 Devel, In XP it was a simple case of right clicking the Intel Graphics Media Accelorator and choosing the External Monitor option, this then allowed me to set my resolution to 1280x960 and i was happy. (even bigger desktop than before actually)
I cannot seem to find this option in Ubuntu, going through System -> Prefrences -> Monitor gives me the option to mirror the screens, but that leaves me with an incredibly low resolution, choosing to not mirror the screens allows me to set the resolution to 1280x960, but the LCD screen still acts as my main. Is there any way I can set it to recognise the TV as the main, and switch off the LCD like I did in Windows?
I am looking for a way to switch quickly and easily between my Laptop Display and my External Monitor, in Windows I had it configured so that when I plugged my Monitor in it would switch to that and when I removed it it would switch back to Laptop Display. From what I have tried it looks like this isn't possible with Linux, but I would like to get to the stage when I can click an icon to switch (or 1 to go to External and 1 to go to Laptop) My Laptop has an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series Graphics Card and I have so far noticed the following issues.
1. If I use the Gnome Monitors instead of ATI Catalist Control Centre it seams to cause some strange issues include confusing Linux on what the max screen res supported by my External Monitor is.
2. When I try and enable/Disable either Display or change Resolution, I am told that I have to reboot before the changes take affect.
The idea is that I got to grips with Linux a couple of times in the past; most recently in a Radio Astronomy class (where we had to use openSUSE and terminals 24/7). I loved it so much that I fired up Wubi on my laptop and I am having a play.
Then I loved it even more.
So here's the plan:
Find Windows (Vista) CD *sigh*
Get 500 GB external Hard Drive
Backup files to HD (60 GB max)
Reformat Laptop & Reinstall Windows

To my understanding, this gives me a blank slate with a lot of room to play with because of the external HD. If this is not possible/too risky etc. then what are the best alternatives?
The plan is to make my primary OS Ubuntu. The way I figured, to keep things simple, is to keep the laptop's HD with Windows as 'normal'. I would thus install Ubuntu to the external HD, and put my files etc. on that.
Now, is that possible for a clean installation? Ideally, it would be fantastic if the boot can be configured so it would boot Ubuntu if the HD is connected, and Windows if not.
I don't know if it sounds weird but I've been trying for weeks with no result. I want to plug my external monitor through my laptop's vga plug, close the lid and work on my monitor instead of the laptop's monitor. I looked through the gnome power management settings and when the laptop lid is closed it can only suspend, blank screen, hibernate or shutdown. I can plug my monitor and I have clone displays and it works fine but I can' find a way to shutdown the laptop screen without shutting down the vga outlet. Its a brand new Acer aspire 5734Z with a 15,6 inches screen (wich is why I want to plug in my 19 inches monitor and work on bigger screen)

When I boot up the system, it uses the integrated monitor (LVDS1) only, and I have to manually manually switch to the external monitor (VGA1) using xrandr.
Is it possible to configure my Xorg (or whatever) so that it uses the VGA1 output if present?
Is it any way of activating my wireless without using the external switch of laptop (currently broken)?
If yes how can I memorize this action so that each time I boot it will be automatically open?
I am using Ubuntu 10.10. In previous versions wireless was always activated.
I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation

If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
I am writing a perl script which uses the matlab compiler to compile a .m file.
I am using the system("mcc �m file.m"). I have matlab installed and both script and exe are in the same drive.But i get the following error .

Under upload's and download's I have identical category subfolders like mp3's, movies, software etc. in both. I can get it to run by simply switching to the directory, then doing: ./hltv Now, when I do that, it obviously closes when I exit Shell. So I do the following and it gives me errors then. screen -A -m -d -S hltv ./hltv My question is, do I need all of those commands after screen? I just simply want it to not close once I exit Shell.

I do it this way as it stops all the headaches with the MBR or GRUB, and doing updates and re-installs are completely clean and hassle free(what % can claim this in a regular multi-boot?)
