Ubuntu :: Damaged Hard Drive And Interrupted Update - Message Appears When Run Command Is Added Then Freezes

Apr 10, 2010

A section of the hard drive on my laptop is damaged but the laptop has genearlly been running fine as it seems to very rarely touch that section (once every few months). However, when installing some updates the computer has hit that section which means it becomes unresponsive and makes a nasty clunking sound every 10s or so. Because of this I've had to abort the update but now whenever I try to run 'dpkg --configure -a' to sort out the problem caused by the interrupted update I get the same freezing up and clunking. The message that appears when I run the command is adding extension /usr/lib/openoffice/basis3.0/program/mailmerge.py... and then it freezes.

Ubuntu :: Hard Drive Recovery - Filesystem Seems Damaged

Sep 8, 2010

I've been using ubuntu about a year, so I have a fair amount of experience with it. Today I was trying to install ubuntu on my new laptop, which doesn't have an optical drive. I don't have a usb stick, so I attempted to partition my external hard drive. I stupidly clicked "erase disk" on startup disk creator and erased the entire drive instead of the partition. I want to get back the files I had on this external. I searched and managed to find that people had been successful with testdisk. when I choose to analyse, it only finds the partition I created for the live cd.

When I choose advanced, I can find my older partition (FAT32) but when I choose to undelete I get:
Code:
No file found, filesystem seems damaged.

When I choose boot I get:
Code:
Boot sector
Bad
Backup boot sector
Bad
Sectors are identical.

A valid FAT Boot sector must be present in order to access. Any data; even if the partition is not bootable. I searched but I couldn't find anyone receiving this error message or how to deal with it. So I tried using photorec. Photorec is recovering all of my documents currently but without the filenames and file structure, it's more or less worthless.

OpenSUSE :: Added Second Hard Drive Now Can't Chown Or Chmod

Mar 29, 2010

I occasionally get into areas in Linux where I get my own ignorance demonstrated....System is a core quad running OpenSuse 11.2 64 bit on a LAN at home. I added a 750 GB SATA drive with the idea of putting all media on the drive i.e.music primarily plus a few movies and making the data sharable by anyone across the LAN i.e. the computer in the living room with an audio line to the stereo. My room mate is strictly a Windoze user so I figured if she wanted stuff on her machine as well then format the new drive with NTFS which I did using GPartd. I then set the drive to mount as /storage under root.

I loaded the music library &c and although I can play music from my user account on this machine I can not add music or videos or anything else except as root. I dont want to have to change to /root to do this. I attempted a chmod tonight as su from a terminal then in the root GUI using dolphin and resetting the permissions under properties and nothing changes. The drive appears in the filesystem as /storage with ownership as root. The permissions are

drwxr-xr-x 1 root users 4096 2010-03-27 22:55 storage

trying to chmod as root has no effect at all. I would like to be able to add content from any machine on the LAN plus be able to play a movie or video as well as music (I assume this would need the execute permission) but chmod -R 777 storage has no effect. Neither does cd'ing to the directory and trying to change ownership or permissions on the individual files or directories on the drive.Command line as su or as root from that gui, no difference. I do a

chmod g+w,o+rw storage

and the command appears to execute. However I ls -l and find the permissions unchanged. I obviously have or am doing something wrong, possibly in the way I set the drive up in the first place.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Freezes / Locks Up When Using Hard Drive?

May 5, 2010

I've just installed 10.04 as a dual boot with Windows 7. I did a clean install removing my old 9.10 install.I really like all the changes I've seen so far and everything seems to work smoothly except when the HD is being used a lot everything freezes and then un-freezes again and again until the file operation has stopped. The problem really only comes up with heavy operations like moving large files (I moved a 10gb vdi from my Windows partition to Ubuntu) and when backintime does it's daily backup.ometimes I can continue using it then it'll freeze I wait.. can use it again for a bit then it will freeze again.'ve never had problems with transferring large files on the Windows 7 install so I don't think there's a hardware problem. I can't seem to find anything I've been searching for two days now. I did find something about a problem with backintime/ext4 partitions but the solution hasn't helped.

Ubuntu :: Transferring Hard Drive To A New Computer / GRUB Giving An Error Message?

Nov 16, 2010

Today, I finished assembling my dream computer. I can boot it into the BIOS, and I checked that everything was working correctly through there. Anyway, I attempted to transfer the hard drive from this computer to that one. This computer is a Dell (blech) Optiplex GX280 with an Intel processor and integrated graphics. The new one has an AMD Phenom II processor with an ATI card and an ASRock motherboard (drastically different machines, I know...) When I try to boot, GRUB gives me an error message that says something like:

Code:
blah whatever cannot find /dev/disk/by-uuid/372de761-9577-48be-ba19-c6b2890cb229
Did I do something wrong installing the hard drive? Or is this a problem that is going to happen no matter how hard I try to make it not happen? If the second is true, will it help if I wipe the disk and reinstall Ubuntu on the new computer?

P.S. I know similar threads about transferring hard disks have been posted, but no thread has mentioned this error.

Ubuntu :: Partition Table Damaged - Pc Doesn't Boot From Hard Disk

Feb 20, 2011

Caused by Used fdisk to delete the windows partition, in my dual boot. Then I could no longer log in to ubuntu, the partition table was some how courpt and I couldnt remount I then decided to use the windows partitioner from windows setup, as I thought it is so stupid, to reformat the partition where I had ubuntu. I wanted reinstall ubuntu, and I know that during the setup I could straighten out the mess I'd made.

Windows has now installed two 8mb one cylinder partitions on my HD. When I start the PC I get a !disk error occurred Press Crlt Alt Del to restart! This happens everytime. HD boot sequence is buggered, i guess.

I can boot from other devices. USB + CD. How when I use the windows disk to boot up I can see the 2 8mb partition, which it wont let me delete. How can I delete this via linux?

Also when I try to install ubuntu from the usb drive, it stalls just after the Preparing to install part. The next screen is when you set the partition table, swap drive etc. When I quit I get the following error !Process Glib WARNING getpuuid_r() failed due to unknown id!

The usb_liveCD does however mount my hard disk partitions and luckily I have managed to back everything up to an external.

Ubuntu :: Copy A Hard Drive From Command Line?

May 4, 2011

Ubuntu is getting stuck at the loading screen after an aborted attempt to upgrade to 11.04. It's my own fault - the install was running out of room on /, and I, like an idiot, decided to delete some package files under /var/something/archive, thinking they were "old"... I quickly realized they were in fact the new packages being installed... anyway after killing the thing and rebooting it is pretty damn broken (mostly because I can't get networking going so running in dpkg repair mode doesn't do much because, well, I deleted the packages).

I want to copy all the files off my /home and other meaningful partitions onto an external drive so I can just do a clean install. I can actually login to the command line under recovery mode, but I can't get the GUI started. I know it's possible to copy the contents of the partitions to an external

General :: NTFS Drive Damaged After Unsafe Removal From Windows 7

Jun 5, 2011

some info on the drive - it's a USB 2.0 portable hard drive (PQI H560), one partition spanning all 640GB, NTFS. Used almost exclusively on Linux (arch and ubuntu), but initially formatted on Windows 7.The hard drive has quite a lot of hard links on it, as it was a timemachine-like backup system. And now the issue itself:Today I made the mistake of taking out my portable hard drive from my Linux system and plugging it in a Windows 7 box. Everything worked nice, I took a movie from the drive, and it lay dormant for an hour or so. After that I took the drive out (forgot to unmount :/) and put it back in my Linux.

Any idea why did it break so bad? I thought NTFS was kind of durable.Best if there would be something nondestructive (be able to get the data while preserving every bit of the drive in it's current state - just to be sure it doesn't break anything)
