I wanted to know if i can install 9.10 onto a usb flash drive--without using my computers hard drive at all when running ubuntu off the flash drive-
View 3 RepliesI recently upgraded my computer and tried using same hard-drive in new one. Fedora 11 booted and allowed me to log-in. But system is un-usable as there are no Icons on desktop and no panels. While I know that initial installation is based on hardware profile of previous computer, is there any work-around to make it work without having to install fresh. Also, If I choose option "replace previous Linus version" from LiveCD, will that preserve my personal data and settings?

So far the best result i have gotten is it will sit on the loading screen for a while then dump. I was only able to get the last little bit which reads mount. mounting /dev on /root/dev failed: no such file or directory. mounting /sys on /root/sys filed: no such file or directory. mounting /proc on /root/proc failed: no such file or dirctory. target file system doesn't have requested /sbin/init

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've installed Linux to a portable hard drive with the assumption that I would be able to transfer that hard drive to my other computers and be able to boot into Linux from them. I know for a fact that these computers are capable of running the same linux installed on the portable HDD via LiveCD or LiveUSB flash drive.
However, when I try to start my portable hard drive on any computer other than the one I installed it on, it boots to a black screen and stays that way indefinitely.
So, I would like to know how to make my portable hard drive more versatile, and to automatically adapt to different computers during boot.
Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

Back in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??
I have 3 seperat drives, 2 x 16 gigs and an 8 gig, and was wandering which one would be best for booting off of? What do I look for??

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation
Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
I bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.
I'm very new to Ubuntu. Now that I have it installed, my computer doesn't recognize my external hard drive or flash drive. How do I access my external hard drive and flash drive? View 6 Replies View RelatedI wanted to install a Linux distro to a flash drive so that I can have a portable OS with all my settings, programs, etc. wherever I go. So I fired up a Linux Mint Live CD and installed Mint to the flash drive, and this seems to work OK. But now, whenever I try to boot up my system normally without the flash drive plugged in, it doesn't seem to work. It basically hangs for a bit, and then I get the following prompt:
However, when I try powering my system up when the USB is plugged into the computer, it gives me an option between using the OS installed on my USB and the OS installed on my HD. Selecting the latter, everything loads up just fine. I'm guessing that installing Mint to the flash drive somehow messed with my native Grub installation.
I am wanting to replace the hard drive on my laptop with a Compact Flash Card. I bought a card and a adapter, but I am seeing that there are a lot of downsides to this (e.g. the card is slower, writes should be conserved because of limited write cycles, etc..) plus, in order to change the hard drive in my laptop (ibook g3 clamshell) you literally have to disassemble the entire thing! I mainly wanted to do this project to increase my battery life. However, some people say that it doesn't make much of a difference, while others say it is wonderful. So, to those that have done this mod, how much of a difference did it make for you?

So i installed it via USB memory stick & it works. After installation of the OS I am impressed with functionality & speed. when i conect the external hard drive via usb it doesn't show & i tried my usb flash disc it showed the same problem. I tried both disk in my laptop (Windows XP) & it works.

My question is do i use arch linux to reinstall GRUB or do I choose none and configure GRUB to see both? if its the later can you tell how. Oh and Ubuntu is on sda and Arch is on sdb
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just booted one of my computers from a usb drive I had installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to, and when I booted it up on that computer, it worked fine. Then, when I powered down the computer and booted it back up to the main hard drive, it booted to the same that my flash drive was running, but my flash drive was not plugged in!! How is this possible? Did it copy itself over my other operating system? There is no trace of it. By the way, that, too, was ubuntu 10.04.

I have a Transcend 4GB USB flash drive that suddenly stopped working. However, when I insert it into the USB slot, the light on the drive glows, but I'm unable to mount the drive, neither does ubuntu detect it.I disconnected the flash drive, and then run `dmesg | tail`. The result was this :

I have ubuntu server acting as a router installed on a 60 gig drive, i'd like to use that drive in another machine and replace it with a 5 gig drive. how can i transfer from the 60 gig drive to the 5 gig drive?

Therefore, I am going to be cloning the 160gb drive to a 320gb drive to keep my system settings while I am waiting for my new drive. I will not change the size of the partitions to fill the 320gb drive. I'll just change the grub settings if I absolutely have to. After that, I am going to have to clone the 320gb drive back to the replacement 160gb drive. Am I going to have problems doing that since I will be going from a larger to a smaller drive?I typically use Clonezilla with the default settings.
