Ubuntu Installation :: Not Installing/working \ Boot Menu, It Shows Some Dialog, Then Just Blank?
Aug 29, 2010
I tried Wubi, and all is fine, but when I choose Ubuntu on the boot menu, it shows some dialog, then just blank. its stays blank forever, so I had to shut the computer off. Then, I burned the Ubuntu iso to a CD and botted from it at startup. This at least showed the purpl-ish install screen. After I pressed enter over install, it went to the blank screen again. just black, nothing appeared.I'm not sure what the problem is. My laptop is fairly new, it shouldnt be having an issue to run it.I have 4Gb RAM, plenty of space on the hard drive, and a 1Gb video card...I have no clue what to do, as this is my first encounter with an Linux distro ever. help?

I have two hard drives - (1) 80GB (2) 500GB: the 1st HD has 3 partitions (in that order) - Windows 7, Ubuntu 10.10 & Swap. the 2nd HD is for storage only, and has 2 partitions.
I did the following - I installed Windows 7 on the first partition of the 1st HD, it booted just fine. Then I installed Ubuntu 10.10 on the second partition of the 1st HD.
Windows 7 shows in the GRUB menu alongside with Ubuntu. Ubuntu boots just fine, but when I select Windows it simply restarts the computer and the GRUB menu shows again.

I recently installed ubuntu(32-bit 10.04) alongside windows 7 in my hp laptop(64-bit).When i installed all the updates available and restarted, a blank screen came after i chose to boot ubuntu. On pressing the power button, ubuntu closing animation appeared & it shut down.Is it because of my hardware drivers not supporting some updates.Do I have to re-install ubuntu..if yes, how do i remove it?..is deleting the ubuntu partion ok..how should i know which updates can be installed..also, are there any problems in running 32-bit version on a 64-bit laptop?

I followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.
I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst
In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l
And got this:
Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.
I tried to format the table as it appeared, but the forum corrected the extra spaces.

I am envisioning a dialog menu with 2 sections, the top 2/3 a menu, then the bottom 1/3 is a message box. When you highlight a menu item it gives you a description of what it does in the message box. However I am not sure it is possible. Can this be done in BASH?

I created a Ubuntu Server 11.04 32 bit USB installer with the Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.4.4. I booted it up and get to the ubuntu install menu, were my first choice is "English" as language. Then I get to an installation menu were I proceed to "Install Ubuntu Server", but when doing so the screen just go blank and nothing happens. I've searched around for a solution but can't seem to find one.(Note: I've installed Ubuntu Server on other computers without facing this issue, so I don't know what went wrong this time.)

I am using Linux on my system. I don't have gui for my system, only console is there.
I have some task to create a menu box window using dialog in shell scripting.
I have to take input from user & save it in a file.
But this should like html form as e.g.
Name - .....................
email id - ..................
phone - ......................
location - ...................
Submit Cancel
Such window should be displayed on console using dialog & then user will enter his information there as Name, email id, phone, etc & submit it, then it gets saved to a file. Here submit & cancle are buttons. I have to do it in bash shell scripting. Or give me some examples like the above with shell script code.

The wubi installer copied files successfully and asked for reboot. After booting into Xubuntu the flashing logo appeared for a minute. And then the screen looked as if it was trying to show something but could not and flickered and then became dark this continued till half an hour and then I pressed Alt+Ctrl+Del.I tried all the modes but to no avail, only the last mode with command line was working. But it was not helpful for me becoz I dont know most of the commands. When I tried "Verbose Mode" as directed by the WubiGuide - Ubuntu Wiki, CTRL+ALT+F2 did not work when the installer stopped. The computer I use is assembled with Intel pentium 4, VIA chipset and Mercury(Kobian) motherboard.

Reading package lists... Done

Reading state information... Done
Package dialog is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source

I installed Ubuntu 11.04 2 days go using wubi. Until today everything worked fine, but now whenever I try to use my keyboard to select the OS option in the boot menu, it doesn't work(arrow keys, enter button nothing works). After 10 seconds the default selection (windows 7) starts up. When windows boots up, the keyboard starts working again.
I googled for the it and found that users who had USB keyboards had this problem, but I'm using a PS/2 keyboard. Also, for 2 days everything went fine but after that it suddenly started happening.

If I boot with the WXP CD and reinstall it in the original NTFS partition, will it wipe the boot menu out, loosing any chance to boot in Linux?
