I would like to be able to change which OS is the default for grub to boot, and I would like to be able to do so easily from either Ubuntu or Windows. I suspect that this may be possible if I put /boot on an ntfs or FAT32 partition (though I do not wish to install Ubuntu itself on such a partition). There I would put multiple versions of menu.lst specifying different defaults. Then, before a restart, I can run a script which will copy, as the 'true' menu.lst, the one which specifies the desired default for my next boot.
Is this possible? If so, what do I need to worry about? (I must admit that it is unclear to me how the code in the MBR even finds the correct menu.lst.)
There is a thing I have worried about with a dual booted system and which I suspect I do not need to worry about. However, I would like to be reassured. I have ntfs partitions and removable drives which both Windows and Ubuntu can access. If a crash occurs which leaves a drive "dirty" (e.g., after a power fail), I am assured that if I reboot the OS in which the crash occurred, it will realize that the drive is "dirty" and will take measures to assure that no corruption will ensue. However, I am not so sure about the correct response if the next OS I boot is different from the one that crashed. I think Ubuntu and Windows both use the same convention for noting that a drive is "dirty", in which case I am worrying about nothing.
The relevance of the above worry in this menu.lst context is that, if it is important to reboot the same OS after a crash, then I would also include for each OS on _startup_ a script that would make itself be the default for a next boot.
How do I add/delete modify the menu system on the Fedora Menu Bar, i.e. If I want to add a custom menu to the "Applications/Office" menu how do I do it?

I recently installed a 64-bit version of centOS 5 alongside a 32-bit version, which I use. Turns out the 64-bit version absolutely will not boot and I'm stuck with it as my default boot option. Since the grub being used resides on the 64-bit half, I cant edit the menu file but I know theres a way to do this without it, through grub itself. I have about 29 render nodes now with this problem, and whenever they need to be rebooted I have to hook a monitor up to each one and hold its hand through the boot process. How to change the grub menu through grub itself, basically just change the default boot option and then have it stay that way?

I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 with Nvidia GeForce 8200M graphics card. When I first installed Windows 7 followed by Karmic in dual boot I could boot into both OS. Now when I try to boot into Windows, it displays the Windows logo and then drops back to the grub menu. It may have started happening after Windows 7 installed updates. I tried reinstalling both Windows and Karmic again and it again worked initially but now Windows no longer boots. Does anyone have any suggestions about what may be causing this or how I can fix the problem without reinstalling?
how to be able to add windows 7 to my grub menu or to even be able to boot to windows 7. I am currently unable to do it and my system just automatically goes straight to ubuntu. I've tried holding down SHIFT during startup and all that appears in my list is ubuntu entries and a memtest entry. My windows 7 files are still intact because I can see the drive through ubuntu and see all my files. I m relatively new to Ubuntu and although I am very aducuate with computers it self (technology studie; modding, scripting and programming) I found a truly atrocious bug that ****s up Gnome (I assume). Here is a screenshot: [URL] The install is from one month ago, and since then i upgrades to 10.04. I never did any unusual stuff as far as I know. I added a few private repositoryś (playdeb, Virtualbox and some PPA?s) and configurated Compiz so it?s good to impress my class mates. This all is installed on a HP Pavilion DV6 with a Ati Graphics card and proprietary drivers.
it's some very simple thing that you can spell out for me cause I'm not in a great deal of time fixing this ****. Considering I nead this PC for school: it must work. Booting in windows would be a sign of weakness towards my classmates and it's no good advertising for linux in general.
I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 recently and now have MBR problem. When selecting Windows XP from the GRUB menu the screen defaults to terminal mode with grub rescue> displayed. I admit I know little to nothing about Ubuntu, unix, etc other than I like what I have seen so far and am trying to learn more. I need to (unfortunately) use Windows and have data on it that I can't afford to lose. How can I repair the problem so I can boot Windows from the menu? Thank you
P.S. I was dual booting successfully earlier. I had the previous version of Ubuntu running with Win XP and everything was fine. The problem started when I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04. I have tried reinstalling 10.04 with no success. If I am unable to get dual boot working my wish would be to save my Win data and then I can wipe clean and reinstall Win and Linux.
At the moment my GRUB 2 boot menu has all the Linux kernels, then memtests, then Windows. I want it to have Windows, then Linux, then memtests. I'm thinking I can do this by renaming /etc/grub.d/10_linux, 20_memtest86+ and 30_os-prober to 20_linux, 30_memtest86+ and 10_os-prober respectively.
I double boot Ubuntu/Vista, yesterday i replaced vista with 7...and after installation was finished i dont get a boot screen as i used to...it just goes into windows 7 sraight...when i hit f12 to enter the boot menu, the only OS that is available is 7. In the windows 7 partition i only have the gbs assigned to that certain partition, meaning that the 100 and something assigned to ubuntu are somewhere out there....
i have a windows xp OS installed on C and on D ubuntu 64bit ! and i disabled from windows to see the booting manager where it shows me weather to choose Windows or ubuntu ! and the GURB menu , when it comes up i cant see windows !

I had Windows XP installed, then installed Ubuntu 9.10 in a different partition. I was able to choose which OS to boot. Then I did a distro update to 10.04. Now Windows is missing from the GRUB boot menu.
sudo update-grub doesn't change anything so I think sudo os-prober isn't finding Windows.
I've edited grub.cfg and can get an entry added for Windows, but it doesn't actually load Windows. It just reboots the machine. If I run sudo update-grub after adding a menuentry for Windows to grub.cfg, the menuentry I added disappears.
I've run testdisk, but BackupBS isn't an option. It says the original and backup boot sector are identical.
cfdisk says sda1 is the only partition that is NTFS and it is set to Boot.
I've already installed all available updates from lucid-security and lucid-updates.

I was messing around with the opacity-brightness-saturation option in compiz and opcaity was set to 100%. Thus, everything that I click on is open, but invisible. I AM A GENIUS.
So I have been trying for the past 24 hours to get Ubuntu installed on my primarily Windows 7 PC, along with the BackTrack Linux OS, so I can explore things dealing with security a bit more, I decided to Dual Boot into Ubuntu and VMware BackTrack for the obvious reason of I am dealing with Viruses/Hacking and such and would rather do that in a safe environment. So after getting Ubuntu installed and working I now have the Grub boot menu along with 5 options 2 for Ubuntu, 2 that slipped my mind, & 1 for Windows (Loader).
My question is, is there any simple way to get the boot menu for Windows back with it just listing "Ubuntu & Windows 7" as two separate options. Sorry for the small level of incompetence its been about 3 years since I was in school getting constantly refreshed with all the info. EDIT: I should probably mention that if I had just done the install on a new HDD instead of an partitioned external I wouldn't of had a problem.
I just installed ubuntu on a remote windows server, using wubi. How can I launch ubuntu? Restarting the remote machine obviously disconnects my session. Is there some way to access the grub menu from windows?
I had a Duel Boot set up on my Computer Windows XP Pro was installed First and then Ubuntu. Originally it was just Two options listed to choose on start up when I Booted up, this was Windows XP Pro or Ubuntu , if I did nothing Windows Xp Pro would start Automatically after about 20 seconds. Windows XP Pro was now at the bottom of the list and I had to scroll down to the bottom of the list to select it and if I did nothing it would Automatically boot into Ubuntu. Last night as I was scrolling down the List I accidentally hit enter it tried to load up Ubuntu and froze I restarted my computer and now Windows Xp is no longer on the list! It loads up Ubuntu fine but I can no longer boot into Windows as it is not listed when I start up. I ran sudo os-prober from Terminal and it came back with :

I've triple booted Windows 7, Windows XP, and Linux Mint 9. I can boot to Windows XP, and Mint with no problems, but there's no Windows 7 option in the boot menu. How can I get Windows 7 to show up so that I could boot to it?
I tried sudo update-grub, but Windows 7 didn't show up.
It would be nice to get a sticky thread up for dual boot installation issues. It seems like this is a very common problem with the upgrade from 9.10 to 10.04.

I had to reinstall Grub2 and run update-grub.
Then I had to run Rescue on my XP disk. Once to the DOS command line I ran the following command:
C:Windows>fixboot c:
I rebooted and now all is well. I can boot to Ubuntu 10.04 or Windows XP from my Grub menu.
i have a dual boot. i loaded 9.1 on one disk and windows xp is on another. grub worked fine. i downloaded 10.4 and i must have selected the wrong option cause when i restarted it dropped me into a shell. i reloaded 9.1 and wiped out 10.4. again i must have selected the wrong option cause i get the grub menu with an option for windows but nothing happens. 9.1 comes up alright and i can select windows office files from ubuntu.
I recently (for about the third time) HAD to re-install Windows 7. It just wouldn't boot and unfortunately I have some proprietary software that I need to use. Anyway, this is the first time I've had to do so since installing Lucid (64bit, fresh install). My problem now is, when I re-installed Grub2 (using the same methods that have previously worked flawlessly) to recover it after re-installing windows, only windows shows up in the grub menu, showing options to boot to Windows on sda1 and another to boot to Windows on sda2.

I installed Ubuntu as a dual boot to play with a while ago, but I really don't have time to be testing it right now, so I'm wanting to set the GRUB menu to automatically pick Windows 7 instead of me having to hang around waiting for the menu to pop up and hitting the right buttons when I'm barely conscious.
Someone linked me here: [URL] and I found the menu.lst file, but when I opened it to edit the default, it was blank ... is the file elsewhere now or something? Do I not have access rights to the file? What's going on, what do I do?
Recently downloaded 10.04 I've just installed to a spare hard drive. The problem I have is after I do the latest system updates to Ubuntu my windows 7 selection disappears from the boot menu. It's there straight after the install. The only way I got it back was to re install ubuntu. Currently I'm not using Ubuntu as I don't want to lose the windows 7 selection again and have to re install. Has anyone seen this problem before and any advise on what I should do to ensure I can still select windows 7 from the boot menu after I update ubuntu.
I installed Ubuntu onto a separate partition I have. Now however when i boot up, Grub (v1.98 ) gives m 5 options.

When I run the recovery environment however, it runs just my regular vista boot would have. Is this just a name issue? Ideally I would like to have my Vista option back.
