I just picked up an AcerAspireOne AOA150-1777 netbook that I've loaded slackware 13 onto. I'm using fluxbox as my window manager. Screen resolutions look good, running at 1024x600, as I set in xorg.conf. My question is, some applications, (gimp/firefox are good examples) open windows that are too big for the screen. I was wondering if there was a way I can set apps to use the limits of my screen size.
View 2 RepliesWhat limits a file to have some maximum size depending on the Operating System? I do not exactly understand this. If you have the storage space, what else can be the limitation? You should be able to store as much data as you want the way you want (even in a single file) unless you run out of storage space.

I would like to limit any process from using more than 500 MB of RAM. AFAIK this is done using RSS in /etc/security/limits.conf but the process called gnome-panel apparently is using 618436 kB of VmRSS. How can this be ?

I have just noticed a nice feature in Windows 7 - when you drag a window to the edge of the screen (the mouse pointer must touch the edge), windows offers you to resize the window to exactly half of the screen size. This is actually very handy on the wide screen monitors.
Is it possible (and how) to configure Kde 4 to do the same thing?
In Ubuntu 11.04, all windows display larger than the available screen size, and I haven't found a way to make them fit within the display area of the monitor. This is a Dell 19" flat screen monitor, and I've tried changing the display; no matter what resolution is selected, the windows all bleed past the screen.

I build a really nice system about a year ago and got Windows 7 64 bit edition (all software is legal and legit) and my computer frequently freezes at random times... I'm pretty sure its not the ram or the motherboard and I run two hard drives with raid0 striping... I have used various Windows OS's on here and they all randomly freeze up during operation.. sometimes during heavy gaming and sometimes right when my system starts up... I dont think its a heat issue since I have a huge and efficient $75 heatsink/fan combo designed specifically for my cpu...
If I make this move, it will cost me a lot since I use a lot of Music and applications such as Ableton Live and Reason, and 3D software like Cinema 4D and zBrush.... Photoshop CS4... and games like Call of Duty MW2....
Will I still be able to use all my apps? I have heard of Wine but have never used it and I dont know how much you can do with Windows apps on Linux these days...

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've already installed x11vnc and have it running well on my laptop upstairs. I can access my existing desktop session with no real problems, it works great. The problem I'm running into is the fact that I'm accessing my computer upstairs which is driving two 1920x1080 monitors, accessing it by VNC on my 1280x800 laptop (meaning I have to scroll a 3840x1080 desktop on my 1280x800 screen. I've looked into running multiple VNC screens, but this doesn't seem to be the best solution, and I don't know if I can do this with x11vnc. I know that I can run native VNC screens at different geometries, but I don't think that this helps much, as each VNC screen is essentially a new session running basically nothing.
A while back in my sys-admin days, I remember having to set up a desktop environment on a Fedora machine. What was cool was that each VNC screen I created launched the default desktop environment. It "just worked," no fuss. Mind you, it wasn't the same desktop on each screen, but it worked.
Installed fine, logged in, but there aren't any panels visible on my screen, so I can't do anything. How do I resize the screen without access to the panels?
EDIT - Never mind, got it working.
I've set limits in limits.conf but they don't seem to be having an effect (the easiest to test is maxlogins). View 1 Replies View Relatedi realised that although before when i had windows7 my relative download speed was around 5.0 MB/s ( i have a 50MB virgin connection)now with ubuntu 10.10 im limited to only 2.8MB/s or somewhere around there.
First i tested my wireless speed on another laptop (with windows 7) on the same network and the speed was as i said around 5.0MB/s sometimes even more. So i thought it was only chrome that i was using at that point.However, this download speed limitation appears in jdownloader as well as in firefox and i guess the whole system.
SO im wondering if there is any way to set up the speed limit on the system and if there is, how should do i go ahead with this change,through the terminal or through preferences?
I have a 64 bit Ubuntu 9.10 workstation with two virtualized guest OSes using KVM/QEMU. Also both 64-bit. One is Fedora 12 the other is beta of Ubuntu 10.04.
The problem is that I would like to use a larger size display that is configured by default.
Both guest OSes have a maximum screen resolution of 1024x768. I would like to increase this to something like 1280x900 or 1440x900. The resolution of the host system is 1920x1080.
This configuration appears to be a result of the installation detecting the resolution being reported by the virtual screen during installation.
The only information I have found on the subject suggests modifying the xorg.conf file in the /etc/X11 directory. Neither guest system has this file.
I tried creating one by hand in the Fedora system and managed to render it completely unusable. Not a big deal as this is recently installed and can be reinstalled easily.

For some unknown reason, I can't resize the Konsole window horizontally while I can still resize vertically. This is bad as the corrent width of Konsole window fills the entire screen!
My friend and I were discussing partitioning and we disagreed on repartitioning when the drive was full. How full is too full before partitioning will mess up your file system? I've partitioned before but it was only after the OS was installed, so only about %5 of the drive is being used. I read that 90% or more is too much. My friend claims it doesn't matter, and you can repartition even if the drive is 95%+ full.

I have a major problem. I have 10.10, and I installed the proprietary drivers for the ATI Radeon HD 6850 (1GB). The resolution is fine, and animations/shadows are fine. However, when opening any app that requires 3D graphics, I get a black screen.

In my corporate environment, I'm required to run a Windows machine that acquires a VNC session on a machine in the server farm. My windows machine is dual head with different resolution monitors ( 1600x1080 on left and 1920x1200 on right). If I create a VNC session that spans the monitors, then maximizing a window in the VNC session causes it to stretch across both my monitors.
Instead, I want a "maximize" event to behave like it does on my windows machine -- I only want to maximize to the display that the window is on.
How can I define what, what I'll call, "maximize regions"? Regions in the VNC graphical plane where when I click "maximize", the window only expands to the region it currently ( and mostly) resides in.
Can I do this in gnome, X, xrandr, or some other magical interface?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have openSUSE 11.2 KDE with NVIDIA drivers. I have a TV on the left and a monitor on the right. In the Nvidia drivers this has also been setup as stated. The TV is on position 0:0 and the monitor is in position 1920:0. The monitor has been ticked in the drivers as the primary screen.
My problem is that all application open on the secondary screen and not the primary screen (monitor) as I expect. How to the OS/drivers that will ensure that application always open on the monitor situated on the right are welcome.
im new to Ubuntu and not look at it all in depth yet. I have a small issue. Im using a Toshiba Satellite A200 Laptop. I installed Ubuntu on it yesterday because i was fed up of windows vista. On windows Vista i use to Plug the laptop into a 50" LG plasma and watch online movies and sports. And for the audio i used a USB cable from the laptop into a Pioneer VSA-AX10Ai Amp. My issue is.I plugged the VGA cable in today to test it on Ubuntu. I went into apps/sys/display and all of a sudden the laptop screen just kept flashing on and off. the Tv was saying in the top left 32" and because of all the flashing i could not do anything so i just turned the laptop off. I have not attempted the Audio Via USB yet . I know vista and my IMAC auto picked up the AMP but not on UBUNTU can anyone help me with the Screen issue ??????

View 2 Replies View RelatedIm running suse 11.2 on a gateway lt3103u during boot i noticed the screen goes dim. i thought nothing of it untill i tried to watch *ahem* educational video *ahem*. ive found that no matter what program i use xine vlc or anything else that video sets the screen to dim as if it were in power saving mode. this problem also occurs when i close the lid. it locks the screen into dim mode. in both cases i can use both Fn keys and the power management widget to reset it to bright, but this problem is annoying having to keep turning it back u to see.
