Dec 21, 2008I'm about to try Wine. But I'm scared it starts vomiting errors like any other VM app.
What do you recommend? I bought a nice Nokia N95 but of course, applications are only for Windows....

The first call, it's blocking Linux environment until I close java app. After that, occurs the second call, then it's free Linux for usage.I tried to change my java app for gedit, and I can see the problem too.I tried with profile.local and /home/<my user>/.profile, the result is the same.

Mar 23, 2010Im running suse 11.2 on a gateway lt3103u during boot i noticed the screen goes dim. i thought nothing of it untill i tried to watch *ahem* educational video *ahem*. ive found that no matter what program i use xine vlc or anything else that video sets the screen to dim as if it were in power saving mode. this problem also occurs when i close the lid. it locks the screen into dim mode. in both cases i can use both Fn keys and the power management widget to reset it to bright, but this problem is annoying having to keep turning it back u to see.

But it gave me warning to delete the windows partition.I would like to keep the partition intact with windows 7 and install Suse. Any suggestions ?I can create partition on my laptop but i do not want to modify the current windows structure.

View 4 Replies View RelatedSUSE :: Get The Option To Choose Windows Or The Installer At The Windows Boot Screen
Sep 16, 2010I'm new to linux, and I'm just trying to learn OpenSUSE. I just installed it and I have a few quick questions. #1 I accidentally installed the "OpenSUSE Installer (LOCAL)" on Windows 7, so now I get the option to choose windows or the installer at the windows boot screen. I ended up just installing OpenSUSE on a completely different HD (my original intent) from a burned DVD, so this installer is useless and I don't know how to remove it.
#2 After installing opensuse on my second HD, the boot screen is now SUSE's instead of Windows, and I can choose suse's desktop, the suse failsafe, windows 1, and windows 2. Windows 1 brings me to the windows boot screen with the choice i mentioned above (windows or the local installer i accidentally installed), and windows 2 i assume is my second windows partition which is just my SWAP file, and selecting it does nothing (which would make sense if thats all it is).
My question here is how do I make it so my default boot screen is the windows one with an option between windows 7 or suse? Or would this require reinstalling the system? If it does and its simple enough to explain please do I wouldnt mind removing it and reinstalling at this point, I would just wipe my whole second HD from windows.
#3 I have a netgear adapter. unfortunitly i'm not at home right now and I don't remember the model, so I'll provide that this evening if necessary. What I do know is they do not have a driver for linux. I've found ACX100, but I didn't find my netgear adapter listed on their website. I also found NDISWrapper, but thats for XP and I still don't know if that'll work. I will of course try both unless someone here has a better solution. If anyone knows anything that will work on any netgear adapter for linux please let me know, if not then I'll provide the model later on.
General :: Run Most My Windows Apps ?
Apr 23, 2010Ok I am finally fed up enough with Microsoft to actually consider making my primary computer system a 100% Linux system... I build a really nice system about a year ago and got Windows 7 64 bit edition (all software is legal and legit) and my computer frequently freezes at random times... I'm pretty sure its not the ram or the motherboard and I run two hard drives with raid0 striping... I have used various Windows OS's on here and they all randomly freeze up during operation.. sometimes during heavy gaming and sometimes right when my system starts up... I dont think its a heat issue since I have a huge and efficient $75 heatsink/fan combo designed specifically for my cpu...
If I make this move, it will cost me a lot since I use a lot of Music and applications such as Ableton Live and Reason, and 3D software like Cinema 4D and zBrush.... Photoshop CS4... and games like Call of Duty MW2....
Will I still be able to use all my apps? I have heard of Wine but have never used it and I dont know how much you can do with Windows apps on Linux these days...
My system: i7 Quad Core/6GB ram/EVGA X58 mobo/GeForce9800GTX...
What I am looking for here is assurance that I will be able to run most of my major applications on Linux with out losing much system efficiency.

Mar 15, 2011So, all I want to do is to shrink sda5 (Ubuntu partition) to 145GBs. Extend sda3 (Windows7) to 145GBs Leave the middle chunk (aprox 400GBs) as it's own free space partition as sort of a file sharing folder for Windows and Ubuntu to share. I use Ubuntu as my main OS and download movies etc. through it but use Windows Mediac Center and other apps on Win7 that (obviously) can't be run in Ubuntu.
So, can anyone give me some help at all. I'll use a live USB version of GParted to do the partition editing but I just want to double check with you guys before I touch anything. =]

Feb 15, 2010I just picked up an AcerAspireOne AOA150-1777 netbook that I've loaded slackware 13 onto. I'm using fluxbox as my window manager. Screen resolutions look good, running at 1024x600, as I set in xorg.conf. My question is, some applications, (gimp/firefox are good examples) open windows that are too big for the screen. I was wondering if there was a way I can set apps to use the limits of my screen size.

So I tended to make a lot of use on the Application list on the old System Tray/Taskbar. I could click on the application's entry in the taskbar and that application would come up. When I needed to return to the Windows App, I clicked again and the application would then minimise so I can see the Windows app. Also I have been using the SUPER button in conjunction with 'E' to raise the Home Directory (just to keep it consistent with Windows).

May 25, 2010I have a sitution that I am trying to set up.I have 2 email servers that run on Windows: one is for internal purposes, the other is external purposes.The external one will receive e-mail from the outside world, clean it up and forward it to the internal one.There are 2 Windows Vista machines and 2 Unix (OpenSuse Linux) machines.Since there can be only 1 email server per domain, I thought I would:
-> set up a local domain with ALL of the machines in it
-> set up a DNS server for the local domain
-> set up a MX record in the DNS server for the email
For the external machine, just have a Dynamic IP point to the Windows machine holding the external email server.Does this sound plausible? Does this make sense?How can one fix it so that a DNS under Suse is accessible from Windows?

Tried to get it going using bootcamp but its just annoying me now, do i have to install windows first before installing Linux or is there another way around this since i need a authentic version of windows, to which i will never use i just want the linux and OSX running.

/dev/sda1 boots fine to the system restore from Acer. when selecting Windows option on boot menu it simply flickers and returns to the menu. /dev/sda3 is non bootable, symply filesystem. When using boot loader settings from YasT I go to other and press "Propose new configuration" it changes the menu but when pressing OK it asks for a floppy disk and doesn't save the configuration (so on new boot I return to the same).

Sep 5, 2010I am trying to install Suse 11 on my new laptop. The laptop has 250GB capacity. As I only use Linux for some scientific programming, I only needed to allocate about 20GB to Linux.
SDA1 is NTFS PQ Service 13.1 GB
SDA2 is NTFS Sys Reserved 101.9 GB
SDA 3 was the mainWindows user partition.
I shrunk this partition to 195GB using GPARTED.
I then tried to add 3 new Linux partitions to the unallocated disc space for usr home and a swap partition. GPARTED informed me that I would need to produce an extended partition to do this.
SDA4 became an extended partition 24.42GB
SDA5 EXT2 10.74 GB
SDA6 SWAP 1.46GB
SDA7 EXT2 11.21GB
When I started the SUSE install, all of the partitions were recognised correctly, but on the Grub details screen (Grub was allocated by SUSE to SDA4) I was warned that as this was beyond 128GB, my computer might not boot correctly. Is this likely to be the case, or do I need to alter something to get SUSE to install. The last thing i want with a new computer is a system that won't boot at all.
General :: Can't Use TightVNC To Connect To SuSE From Windows?
May 5, 2010Have TightVNC 1.3.10.0 installed on WXP. Can connect to Ubuntu 9.10 system running natively on its own system without problem. Have OpenSuSE 11.2 running in a VMWare Server VM on a W2K3 server on yet another system. SuSE VM is web-aware, I can get out to the web and regularly receive SuSe updates. SuSE VM has its own IP address which it got from DHCP. I can ping the SuSE VM in the W2K3 server from my WXP machine. W2K3 firewall is disabled.When I point TightVNC at the SuSE VM, it says it can't connect. When I open a browser page to the SuSE VM at port 5801, I connect, and can log in and work as usual. When I click on the options tab at the top of the screen, a window opens titled "TightVNC Options".
