I was wondering is there were any other file managers for Ubuntu other than nautilus and dolphin, And it has to have a GUI, I like nautilus, but I cant stand the way it's tabs are now (compared to how they were in karmic) also nautilus is a little slow for my liking, dolphins tabs are fine, but I use gnome and it looks terrible outside of KDE.

View 1 Replies View RelatedJust yesterday I did a fresh install on my aspire one of ubuntu 11.04. It then installed konqueror and (apperently at the same time dolphin). Now I did allot of googling and now it works to a level that if i press home folder in my unity bar it opens in Dolphin.Nice But the most important thing still doesnt work, that is if I want to save a document from libreoffice or pdf or what ever program it still opens a window of nautilus. I need it to be a window of dolphin because nautilus doesnt understand the networkdirs you can make with dolphin. (makeing a nautilus network dir doesnt work).

I often encounter a slow responsiveness (lag) and a slow speed browsing throughout folders/files. I have installed Dolphin and i wish to set it up as my default File Manager.

I know there are other vendors that do have, for example, DropBox, but for different reasons, are not an option for me. I have about a dozen window managers installed, and just to test the new KDE 4.4 update I used kde for one day (use gnome mostly) and now the gnome places menu opens up the kde file manager dolphin instead of nautilus. How can I change it. It doesn't even appear in the edit menus item on right clicking the menu.
View 4 Replies View RelatedTrying the various settings (and noticing ubuntu gnome users recently had the same exact OPPOSITE problem -- they can't SHOW hidden files in dolphin) to hide my hidden files in dolphin is not working. The settings are saved OK, but those damn (ending in tilde, ie "~") files do NOT ever hide! I even see the correct little green recycling symbol on them, indicating they're identified as such, but no actual hiding goes on..
Nautilus, which I've used before (but have grown tired of, and was looking forward to dolphin), also has a weird issue that seems to have appeared with FC13 (I'd been using FC12 'til now mostly because of this) - there's no way (AFAIK) to tell it to show the location; to see it, you have to click Go->Location each time. Previously I could set it to print out the whole file or server path and it would stay that way when I opened new windows.. This is on fresh install & update.. kernel is 2.6.35.11-83.fc14.x86_64.
Krusader crashes immediately on start-up at Karmic. This is new. Only changes to my system lately was a routinal FSCK while booting. This is the error message I get:

I thought about trying to reset Krusader's settings. I don't know where to locate them. I would expect a .krusader folder unde my home dir, but it's nowhere to be found.
I've been trying out Nautilus-actions (Gnome 2.28.4), but have been unable to import most config files from [url].
When I attempt to import an action, it complains:

So far, the only one that has worked for me is "Move to custom folder" [url].
How to call Nautilus file browser with root permissions? "sudo nautilus" does not work. Under Ubuntu there is a command:
"gksu nautilus"
but this does not work in CentOS either.
I don't know where to begin figuring this out. On a total fresh install of kubuntu 11.04, everything went fine. When I do any copying in dolphin it crashes. Konqueror does the same thing. I installed samba and I can copy files when using samba from a remote computer, locally it crashes dolphin and konqueror. I turned off desktop searching, still crashes. I tried copying from konquorer to dolphin and vice versa, crashes everytime. The system notification acts like it started the copy and keeps whirring until I close it. What can I try?

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I copy files from one partition to another, or from one drive to another, the transfer rates hover around 5-8MB/sec which is kind of slow given that all my hard drives are SATA II. I have the same problem when copying either a single file or a group of files.
I'm running openSUSE 11.2 x64 here (KDE 4.3.5) with three SATA II hard drives that are all formatted with ext3. I have dropped to the CLI and used mv and cp instead - this seems to improve things but I shouldn't have to do this.
Sometimes the Dolphin file manager displays a "waiting bar" with a blue dot moving left and right all the time.There is a message next to it, stating that the file folder is being loaded. But I do not know that there is anything happening, nor is there any need to load anything. There is also a little red "delete" button, but klicking on it achieves nothing.

In Dolphin the file is simply sent to trash, no warning. I couldn't find a setting in Dolphin configuration options to change this. I do have "Ask for confirmation. when moving files and folders to trash" unchecked, but even so, if the file is read-only?
When I create a new file/folder in a ext4 data partition, it has permissions:
owner: rwx
group: r
other: r
I would like to change this default to:
owner: rwx
group: rw
other: -
I tried changing fstab, but umask and guid are not supported mount options for ext4. What can I do?
Note: I know I can do a chmod, but I don't want to do this again and again for every new file I create.
Instead of logging out and in again as root, I tried running the file manager dolphin through kdesu, but this was very slow and crashed eventually.

View 3 Replies View Relatedi am using dolphin 1.5 in kde 4.5.2. whenever i try to access movie file from remote samba server. dolphin copies the movie file to somewhere in local hard disk. so, i have to wait until a big file transferring complete. i know that it happens when i open .avi using mplayer. if i open the same remote file with kmplayer, it will player immediately instead of making local copy first. however, kmplayer is very slow and sounds and video stream breaking up, (i am sorry i do not know right english expression for this) i suppose this is not related to mplayer configuration. this seems to be dolphin problem. can i make dolphin to stop copying samba share to local disk and play instantly? there is a video in videos. it is comparing how dolphin and nautilus act differently when i play remote samba share movies.

I'd like to use this File Browser to locate the file name based on it content e.g. based on some word in the text file. It doesn't work for me that way ... When I copied in nautilus file explorer and paste into a terminal or text editor, I got the exact path (eg. /home/user/abc.txt), but when coming the Ubuntu 10.04, it added some "file://" prefix to the actual path (eg. file:///home/user/abc.txt), and I always had to manually delete the "file://" prefix. I don't see clearly that we need to place "file://" in front of the actual path (maybe just in the case we want to put the path in an Internet browser?). Wish this reversed back.

I'm trying to get Eclipse IDE running on my openSUSE 11.4 (KDE).
I have downloaded Eclipse Classic from Eclipse Classic 3.7 | Eclipse Packages. I started Dolphin and extracted the tar.gz file to a directory called eclipse. Now, as I understand, to run Eclipse, I must run the executable eclipse. But when I double-click eclipse, I get an error saying, "There is no application installed that can open files of the type executable (application/x-executable)."
Note 1: I have uploaded 3 screenshots as an album at Imgur: Eclipse with image titles and captions.
According to the screenshot #1, the file eclipse has a permission set of -rw-------. The execute permission is missing on this file. So, here's what I did: (screenshot #2) Right-clicked and selected Properties and under the Permissions tab, checked the Is executable checkbox and clicked OK. But still (screenshot #3), the permission set remains the same.
Note 2: The parent directory permissions are visible in the Terminal window below in all the screenshots.
What should I do to make eclipse executable?
