How to call Nautilus file browser with root permissions? "sudo nautilus" does not work. Under Ubuntu there is a command:

Ubuntu :: Shortcut To Access Sudo Nautilus (gksudo Nautilus) From The Current Window

Feb 11, 2011

Is it possible to change my current nautilus window to have sudo capabilities,? e.g. to delete locked files. It may be lazy but if it takes a lot of navigation then it would be handy to somehow activate sudo from the open window without the terminal command (gksudo nautilus) which always begins at root.

Ubuntu :: Nautilus Requires Root Permission Even Without Gksudo, sudo, etc

Aug 15, 2010

Every time I try to open Nautilus it requires root permission even if I don't use commands like gksudo.

I launch it from docky's bookmarks applet, requires root.

Use a command like "nautilus /home/harvey" it still requires root.

Adding the file browser launcher to docky doesn't even LAUNCH nautilus.

But launching file browser from gnome-panel works O_O.

But I never use gnome-panel, so I'd like to be able to launch it from docky and commands and stuff without root permission.

Ubuntu Security :: Anyway To Get Nautilus To Give Root Permissions On Server?

Mar 30, 2010

I have recently secured a server by preventing root from logging in via SSH. Now I log in with a non-root account and use 'su' when necessary. However, now I can't do something I used to do, which is open 'sftp://user@ipaddress' in nautilus and be able to edit files as root. Is there anyway to get nautilus to give me root permissions on the server? Or at least end up with root permissions in a GUI text editor on my computer? I don't mind if I have to use bash to start the process, once I can get a GUI for editing files.

Note 1: Yes, I realize I could ssh in and use nano/vi etc, but I'd rather use my graphical text editor.
Note 2: The server does not run X, so I can't just forward it.

General :: Searching Content Of The File Using File Browser Nautilus?

May 27, 2011

I'm using rhel6. Using File Browser Nautilus 2.28.4 I could easily locate any file I'm interested in by it name. I'd like to use this File Browser to locate the file name based on it content e.g. based on some word in the text file. It doesn't work for me that way ... My question: does Nautilus support the search of file based on it content or only based on the name of the file itself?

Ubuntu :: Nautilus As Root Does Not Work On Laptop

Jul 20, 2010

Two screenshots are attached. On my laptop (a Toshiba Satellite A105) when I open nautilus as root the window that opens is screwed up. If I type [code] "gksudo nautilus" at a terminal prompt, screenshot-1 is what I see. Screenshot-1.png

The title bar has the word "root" instead of "root - File Browser" as it should be. There is no main toolbar, location bar, and no side bar. The next line beneath the title bar shows File, Edit, View, Places, Help instead of File, Edit, View, Go, Bookmarks, Help. If I click on View there are no checkboxes for Main Toolbar, Side Pane, Location Bar, and Status Bar. If I click on anything and then slightly move my mouse the nautilus window immediately closes. Therefore, I can't use nautilus at all to do anything.

This strange behavior only happens when I open nautilus as root. If I open nautilus normally, there are no problems. Screenshot-2 shows the window that opens if I run nautilus as root on my desktop computer. Screenshot-2.png

General :: Changing File Permissions Works As Root But Not As Sudo

Nov 22, 2010

I have a really strange problem. I have a few files in a large directory that I want to make readable by everyone. So I try this:

sudo find readme* -not -perm -o+r -exec chmod +r {} ;

and get this:

sudo: unable to execute /usr/bin/find: Success

I don't know why it says Success, because the permissions were not changed. I verified by typing this:

find readme* -not -perm -o+r -exec ls -l {} ;

and get something like

-rw------- 1 root root 536871076 Nov 22 14:06 readme_20101122200429
-rw------- 1 root root 536871892 Nov 22 14:08 readme_20101122200642
-rw------- 1 root root 293458128 Nov 22 14:10 readme_20101122200859

as a last resort, I tried:

sudo chmod +r *

and got:

sudo: unable to execute /bin/chmod: Success

and again Success really means fail. So, I gave up and logged in as root and tried:

find readme* -not -perm -o+r -exec chmod +r {} ;

This time it worked. Why?

EDIT: /etc/sudoers looks like:

## Allow root to run any commands anywhere
root ALL=(ALL) ALL
##Me
user1 ALL=(ALL) ALL

Ubuntu :: Nautilus And Svn Files On Work Machine Which Has Centos?

Jan 23, 2011

New subversion user here. I've run into a nasty problem. It seems that nautilus chokes any time it tries to display a directory containing .svn files. There seems to be some sort of timeout involved per object under version control. The larger the directory, the longer it takes to display. I'm talking minutes here for a fairly ordinary sized directory.

Now I know that nautilus is painfully slow even at the best of times, but this is just ridiculous. These delays are crippling. I have no problem with nautilus and svn files on my work machine, which has centos. So it looks to me like something is misconfigured somewhere. And it is something specific to .svn files.

Ubuntu :: What Does Set User ID Do - Nautilus Permissions

Oct 22, 2010

What does Set user ID do? Reason I ask is if I select "Set group ID" it makes it so any files/folders created within that directory get the group accordingly. But if I select "Set user ID", it doesn't do anything that I notice. I thought maybe it would change it so any files/folders created get that user set as the owner. So if that's not it - what's its purpose?

Ubuntu :: Move Nautilus Location Bar In Nautilus Up By Toolbar?

Apr 11, 2010

Does anyone know how I can move the location bar in nautilus up by the toolbar, as shown by this pic:
http://i39.tinypic.com/2qdsyll.jpg

I'd rather not have to download the source of nautilus and edit the code / compile it myself.

By the way, a guy on Ubuntu Forums thought this was a mockup. It's not. It's the regular version of Nautilus, only I removed some toolbar buttons through the /usr/share/nautilus/ui xml files.

I just want the location bar next to the toolbar to conserve screen space, and be a bit more like Finder.

Ubuntu :: External Hard Drive Within The Nautilus Browser?

Jun 8, 2011

I don't know why it's happening or what caused it, but just a few minutes ago it occurred that every time I unmount/power down my external hard drive from within the Nautilus browser, Ubuntu freezes and Caps Lock starts blinking, indicative of a kernel panic. It doesn't do this when I Safely Remove the drive from the right-click menu on the drive's desktop icon. Even stranger is that no other external device I've tried causes the panic. It only does this with this particular external hard drive and it's a repeatable error.

Why is this happening and how do I fix it? EDIT: To note, I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with the 2.6.32.33 kernel. Not Ubuntu 11.04.
