Software :: Change The Default File Manager From Nautilus To E.g. Dolphin?
Dec 5, 2008
Using Fedora 10. I want to try different file managers for a while but can't find how to specify the default. I can open each one via the apps menu but can't find the "set as default" option.

I have installed dolphin in ubuntu 9.04 but whenever I click on a folder it opens with nautilus file-manager. I found no option in the folder properties for making dolphin the default file-manager !

When I create a new file/folder in a ext4 data partition, it has permissions:
owner: rwx
group: r
other: r
I would like to change this default to:
owner: rwx
group: rw
other: -
I tried changing fstab, but umask and guid are not supported mount options for ext4. What can I do?
Note: I know I can do a chmod, but I don't want to do this again and again for every new file I create.

I currently have dolphin installed and I would like to make it the default so that in all cases it will open instead of nautilus. How can I do this? I have looked it up but haven't found anything that works, not sure if this is due to a change with 10:04 or just bad information.

How can I change the default file manager in GNOME? I've got these notes but neither methods work:
GUI
Change under 'Session control' in 'Ubuntu Tweak'
Delete nautilus and type in pcmanfm or another file manager such as thunar
Apply
Quit ubuntu-tweak
Reboot
TERMINAL:
Code:
gksu gedit /usr/share/applications/nautilus-folder-*handler.desktop
Then replace 'nautilus --no-desktop %U' to whatever you like. Example: pcmanfm %U
Save, logout & login
Update: This works. Why does the Ubuntu Tweak method not work though?
Code:
sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/nautilus-folder-*handler.desktop

I was wondering is there were any other file managers for Ubuntu other than nautilus and dolphin, And it has to have a GUI, I like nautilus, but I cant stand the way it's tabs are now (compared to how they were in karmic) also nautilus is a little slow for my liking, dolphins tabs are fine, but I use gnome and it looks terrible outside of KDE.

Sometimes the Dolphin file manager displays a "waiting bar" with a blue dot moving left and right all the time. There is a message next to it, stating that the file folder is being loaded. But I do not know that there is anything happening, nor is there any need to load anything. There is also a little red "delete" button, but klicking on it achieves nothing.

I was messing around with different GUI sessions, and I wanted to try XFCE. Well, I switched to XFCE for a session, and I played around in it. When I went back to a Gnome session, however, it appears that Thunar is now the default filesystem explorer.I get the Thunar explorer. I want the Nautilus explorer. How do I fix this issue?

behavior in 9.04:plugged in a disk, mounted it and it as readable to the world.this is intended because it is shared via samba.behavior in 10.04:the disks have 700, meaning, they are not readable by samba.this is a problem.this is the best solution I've found so far:http://www.mail-archive.com/ubuntu-u.../msg10951.htmlexcept, that the mentioned means to fix this are gone.(gconf-editor -> ..., storage and preferences -> removable media)after 3 hours of googleing and reading I'm rather upset about this bug.so please, if you are thinking of suggesting fixed entries in the fstab or anything else that will not work with every media that is plugged into this box, just close this tab.

I would like to change my default window manager to sawfish. There are many instructions on the web to install sawfish, log out, then select sawfish, then log back in. This worked for me with karmic, but I'm not seeing any way to select a window manager during the lucid log in process. (Sawfish is running fine if I start it with "killall compiz && sawfish &" during an ongoing session.)

I installed 6.04 LTS on my machine and the upgraded to 8.04 LTS, and then 10.04 LTS. I was playing around with appearance settings and chose the highest level of window animation but this seemed to cause some sort of problem with gnome (the top bar of windows disappeared including minimize, maximize and close buttons). So I used command line to reinstall gnome (sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop) and this fixed the problem, but because i didnt realize what i had done to cause it i tried to do the animation settings again, which messed it up and became unfixable by using the above command, so i installed the kde desktop environment using command line and chose to use kdm as the default display manager because i thought i might have to uninstall gnome and didnt want to lose all display managers. Later on i had another idea of how to fix my gnome problem, i chose the highest level of animation again in the appearance settings but when it asked if i wanted to keep these settings or use previous settings i chose previous which reverted back to the lowest level and the window bar came back!
Because i got this fixed i didnt want to use the kdm display manager anymore, so i modified the /etc/X11/default-display-manager file from /usr/bin/kdm to /usr/bin/gdm, at the time i didnt realize it was supposed to be sbin! so i restarted the computer and now it cant find the file for kdm or gdm because gdm is in sbin and kdm is in bin but its looking for gdm in bin. So i have been trying to use recovery boot up to edit the file, which is where my problem is: whenever i try to edit the /etc/X11/default-display-manager file to read /usr/sbin/gdm, it displays that i do not have write permissions and that it is a read only file. I have used sudo with every command, and tried nano and vi text editors.Long story short I need to edit the /etc/X11/default-display-manager file to read /usr/sbin/gdm but it will not let me due to "write permissions" even when im using root and sudo;

I have, in fact, stated my problem correctly. I want to make Nautilus as the default File Manager in KDE. I use GNOME on other computers, and don't like the feel of the KDE file manager on my PC. I looked online but most "solutions" are for the other way round and in either case, didn't work for me.
I tried changing the 'inode/directory' file association to Nautilus but it didn't change anything. What can I do ? (I have GNOME as a DE here too .. But I would like to know how to change the association in KDE as well)

I need some restoring my Nautilus File Manager back to its original state. I tried installing Elementary Nautilus but for some reason it was not working for me, so I uninstalled it but have been having an issue with Nautilus looking like its former self. Now Nautilus doesn't display the "tree" on the left, there are no back/forward icons, and generally looking strange. Here's a picture to showcase my issue:

I would love to use Elementary Nautilus but can not get it as my default file manager. Since I can't do that I just want Nautilus (the one that comes shipped with Ubuntu) to look and act like it's supposed to.

I would like to use DropBox, but I really don't want Nautilus on my system.I downloaded the source to compile, thinking it would allow me to use a different file browser, but unfortunately it seems they made it dependent on Nautilus. Is there a way to compile it using a different file browser (Thunar in this case)? And if not, is there an alternative to DropBox out there that works on multiple platforms?

I have a 9.04 machine that is used by the family with two accounts set up. One is mine with sudoer privileges and I prefer fluxbox. The other account is for everyone else and the rest of the family prefers gnome. Is there a way to set the default DE/windowmanager for each user so that each user simply has to login and be in their preferred environment?

With Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 I have seen that the nautilus filemanager is extremely slow with folders that contains many files or/and folders.I made sure that "Assistive Technologies" is diable. On the filemanager preference I set all preview to "Never", tried all possible views, but the filemanager remains extremely slow. It seems like it becomes even slower when the subfolders in the folder you are viewing new files are being created by for example a program. Possibly nautilus filemanager is updating continuously ?
I use to be using debian etch nautilus file manager. With the same directories, nautilus in debain etch was working much faster. But contrary to the one in Ubuntu 9.10 and 10.0.4 is is far less stable. It seems like the newer version is more stable but however extremely much slower. I was wondering if I am missing something. Or whether this is a bug. If it is a bug, then I am wondering when this is going to be solved in nautlius filemanager.

Last night I had to re-install Ubuntu. Previously, the header of the file manager had been configured up with the three buttons on the right for icon/list/compact view (see 1st image below), whilst since re-installing, they appear with the drop-down menu instead (as per the 2nd image). How do you change between these two formats? My preference is for the first of these.
