Nov 28, 2009Instead of logging out and in again as root, I tried running the file manager dolphin through kdesu, but this was very slow and crashed eventually.

SUSE / Novell :: How To Mount And Unmount Floppy Within Desktop / Dolphin Filemanager In KDE 4.1?
Feb 23, 2009Anybody knows how can I mount and unmount a floppy within the desktop and/or dolphin filemanager in KDE 4.1? If I run dolphin I can see a floppy icon on the left, clicking on it seems to activate a reading of the floppy, then I have to go to /media folder and click on /disk folder to display the floppy files, then if a right click on the floppy on dolphin the only option I get is to hide the floppy shortcut, there is no option for unmount the floppy. I tried to make a desktop shortcut to floppy by right clicking on the desktop folder and selecting new device floppy and entering /dev/fd0 on device location, and clicking okay. Even that does not have the unmount command when I right click on the desktop shortcut, so the floppy gets stock in mount state.
also I dont see an applet or the so called plasmanoid when I click on the plasma icon on the right of the task bar and click add widget, on kde 3.5 I have the media applet on the task bar, it worked like a charm, I give a 1000 thanks to the developer of the media applet.
Any ideas on how to mount and unmount my floppy? It is a standard internal floppy, which is connected to the standard floppy controller on the motherboard. The only way to have access to it is logging into kde 3.5 and have the media applet/widget in the taskbar, and then works like a charm, I can mount it or unmount it any time. But I would like to try the new Version 4.1.3 (KDE 4.1.3) "release 72.4" that I'm running. I believe this is the latest from the opensuse 11.1 KDE 4 STABLE repository, so I know I have the latest patches for KDE 4.
SUSE / Novell :: Session Manager ?
May 9, 2010I installed OpenSUSE and it seems to have installed multiple desktop environments. I only need one environment and don't much care for the flexibility of others as it is a drain on my HDD space.
Problem is that uninstalling one seems to conflict with anothers dependencies and I'm unsure if removing configuration packages with one environment is going to adversely affect another environment. Said packages being like gnome keyring manager or like programs that pertain to interfaces for hardware settings and configuration.
I began to uninstall Gnome, and it just started trying to change everything about Kde4, and when it said Yast and keyring manager I was unsure if I should continue, even letting Yast decide what to do. Numerous of the programs I installed also would have been broken such as gstreamer codecs, google programs, gimp, everything had to change from attempting to remove the Gnome Desktop.
I would prefer to have no remnants of any environment except for KDE.

Jan 20, 2010My external storage failed and 1 file system related was damaged. When booting OS, it stops on fsck with the damaged file system. Thus the OS will never be up and running, no matter how long I wait. My question is, how to skip the fsck on the damaged file system? Since OS can not be booted up, I have no chance to change /etc/fstab. I just want to boot up the OS and remove the damaged file system manually.

Not only did it not fix it, but now I cannot connect to any network, wired or wireless. I tried to open the default network manager and it said "Network management disabled". How do I re-enable it?I also have set YAST settings back to their originals with no luck.

Mar 17, 2009I have a quad cpu with 8gb ram running SUSE 10 sp2 on a raid 5 XEN host server. I have created a 250 gb partition GWMAIL in the extended partition to be the disk space for the first virtual machine OES sp1 with groupwise 8.0. I have downloaded the OS .iso's to the desktop of the host server to use for installation. When I begin to install, it hangs for 5 to 10 minutes then gives me an out of space error.

Mar 24, 2011Sometimes the Dolphin file manager displays a "waiting bar" with a blue dot moving left and right all the time.There is a message next to it, stating that the file folder is being loaded. But I do not know that there is anything happening, nor is there any need to load anything. There is also a little red "delete" button, but klicking on it achieves nothing.

May 23, 2010Yesterday afternoon, I was playing around with updating my system with RPMs from the openSUSE RPM Search. I had bash v 4.0.18 (I'm running a decaboot, the primary OS being openSUSE 11.2, where the issue is) and I installed a package that was bash 1.0.36. I restarted my Yakuake terminal to see the new bash. Immediately, I noticed the Yakuake terminal flashing rapidly, and the terminal wouldn't go down when I used the key that brings up and down, so I controlled-alt-escaped it and killed it off. Then I wondered if it was just me, so I hit ALT-F2 and logged in as root. It quickly said some symbol file (Something)_(Something)_REWRITE(maybe) then disappeared, giving my the login prompt. I though, well, OK maybe I have to restart it to get it to work. Init said "there is no more processes left on this runlevel" and I had to Power-Button it and reboot. When it rebooted, or tried to, I was greeted with "KERNEL-PANIC Tried to kill init"
I panicked with the kernel, and I went into my 11.3 Milestone 4 installation, tried to chroot it, but I received the same error as when I tried to log into root and was returned to my 11.3 session.
I later tried to do a mock update with the 11.2 DVD, and tried with the YaST package manager to downgrade BASH, but the RPM installation failed, even on good DVDs. I tried the rescue, but it said BASH wasn't a "critical file" while things I don't even use were checked (like openssh)
From 11.3, I tried linking sh from bash to ksh (Korne Shell). For all I know, it is just like bash. It didn't work. Same kernel error.
I relinked sh and bash together, and I am using SUSE 11.1 in the meantime, but does anybody know how to fix this without reinstalling my SUSE 11.2 completely.

I was looking around for where the file or directory is that holds the list of modules to be loaded when compiling the kernel but SLES does not seem to match other Linux distro's, at least from the other posts I read for where to find these.

Oct 12, 2010I am unable to get a knoppix poor mans install to boot using grub and opensuse 11.3. I have tried the same method on another box, same opensuse 11.3 and it boots fine. However, no matter what partition I put the knoppix files in on the problem box, it is the same error. I also have several opensuse kernels listed in the grub menu that were added when the kernel was updated, so the knoppix grub entry is off the screen. I have to down arrow to list the knoppix entry. I read that with this kind of error using ubunto as the host system, that running update-grub will force grub to look for bootable kernels and add it to the menu of boot choices. Does the same fix apply to opensuse 11.3? I have two versions of puppy linux working on this box as a poor mans install, so I am at a loss why it will not see the knoppix kernel. Can it be a problem of too many kernels listed in the menu.lst file? This box is a live update from opensuse 11.0.

Jan 22, 2010I am trying to set up a usb weather station (WMR100) on my SUSE 11.1 system. It appears as /dev/hiddev0 (and /dev/hidraw0) when it is plugged in with:
crw-rw---- 1 root root ...
It is the only hiddev device that appears in /dev
I have added this to /etc/udev/rules.d code...
(I will add idVendor/Product values later)
The above successfully sets the access codes for hiddev0 when examined from command line (crw-rw-rw- ...). However, the file browser is fine until I look at the properties for /dev/hiddev0 when it hangs - showing nothing.
Can anyone shed light on this - especially as to if I have done something wrong or this might be a 'bug'

Jul 19, 2010New Suse 11.3 installation with Gnome desktop. Added K3B using Yast2, and after completing the install of K3B, there is no icon for K3B! Instead there is an "X" and the text for K3B in it.From the main menu -> more applications -> multimedia, is where the K3B icon is.Yast2 is supposed to install any dependencies needed or warn if it can not find any missing dependencies. What is missing, or is it a permission problem? All the other application icons seem fine.

Nov 19, 2010to get flash 10 working. I just decided to update to 11.3. Bought a 8.0GB USB stick to copy files to. USB DISK icon on visible on Desktop. mounted on /media/USB DISK Clicking on device properties it is read only. I can change permissions but that is only temporary. Looking under my computer it is formated as vfat device name is /dev/sdb
I can't copy any files to it. Can't see in terminal even being root as well. Almost started the Partitioner in Yast but didn't want to accidently crash the system. That WOULD be my luck Can't find a way to format it via GUI interface. Can I use something like fdisk in terminal. I guess I need to format it as ext3.
